I remember listening to it growing up in Texas and Mexicans were ambivalent towards or despised it. They did not consider it Mexican but a weird American music. It gained popularity as it became the default style for “narco corridos” or just “corridos “. People on the border in Mexico close enough to get American radio stations in Spanish that played it began appreciating it first. Then its popularity spread into the interior of Mexico. But I still talk to Mexicans today from the deep interior who are baffled as to why so many people like this foreign music. It has become the Spanish language equivalent of gangster rap today.

I lived in Sweden recently. For the most part, it's an extremely pleasant, well-organised, clean and efficient country. There are certain neighbourhoods that are not pleasant, although nowhere near as bad as Baltimore, Detroit, Chicago, St Louis or New Orleans. Sweden has become extremely hostile towards immigration and it's not easy for even Europeans who have freedom of movement there to get through bureaucratic hurdles. Even foreign residents of Sweden have started leaving because it's become so hostile.
