To me "I have gone only once by train" Sounds just as absurd as "I have only once traveled by car"

I love travelling by train. Yes, there are some major construction sites everywhere at the moment, with delays and cancellations, but if you are smart enough to check a day or so in advance... not nearly as horrific as some professional complainers make it sound.

have to agree i used trains almost daily for more than 5 years going to and from my workplace, had to take 2 different trains and a tram afterwards. in all these years i was late only 2 times because the train was broken. It really isnt as bad as many make it out to be. None the less its still way worse than in switzerland or japan.

I am not using the train frequently, more like 20 times a year. Half of my rides are a catastrophe. Missing the next train bc my train just stopped for 5min on the tracks. Train not coming to my station, got the info 1h earlier.. Being on the right track to wait for the train, get the announcement that the train will arrive at another track, go there, get the info that the train will come to the original track - everything with heavy luggage. Seat reservations not working. Trains having technical difficulties like no AC, stopping for no reason, having to restart the engine, .... I could list so much more that I experience within one year.

but its either 1st or 2nd class. no other classes. and 2nd is soooo goood. we didn't have the extra cash to try the dining cart, but also heard its a alternative place to sit if all the seats are taken. but for my brother and I, the floor was so clean. we are from South Africa.

On balance, Deutsche Bahn made a loss of 2.4 billion euros in 2023. main reasons for this are the high costs for construction, energy and personnel, increased interest rates and ongoing strikes. The German government invested around 7.6 billion euros in 2023. The network needs renovation because it was chronically underfunded for 16 years at the expense of highways in Bavaria, thanks to three corrupt Bavarian CSU federal transport ministers in 16 years and a high level of unpunctuality. Almost every third long-distance train is late.

1994 is more than 16 years ago. The underinvestment began with privatisation, and had been ongoing just the same under the SPD government of Schröder. The current infrastructure investment being built was planned under previous governments. After all, planning alone takes several years. Our current government meanwhile has decided to once again cut spending on rail infrastructure. So not sure where you got that opinion of yours from.
@Rick2010100
@Rick2010100 4 месяца назад
The loss was caused by the the socialistic flat rate ticket introduced by the government. Because of the cheap ticket, the DB was no longer able to make any profits on long-distance routes.

@@Rick2010100 socialistic 😂 no i know that you must be from the US - who has fewer miles in railway than Uzbekistan because affordable ticket prices are evil 😂

It it utterly incomprehensible for "the european mind" how an adult can actually say that he has only been on a train once or twice... 😅 Frankfurt isn't the busiest station in Germany though. That title goes to Hamburg main station (while Munich main station has the most tracks and my hometown of Leipzig has the largest building).

I have to commute by ICE between 4-8 times / month from Düsseldorf to Frankfurt and I stress HAVE! Starting with the CentralStation in Düsseldorf: Provincecapitalcity and you stand on the most filthy plattforms you can imagine: Spat out chewing gum is truly everywhere on the plattforms at weekends "people" garnish platforms happily with vomit and nobody cares. Rules are never enforced, otherwise people would not be smoking everywhere, beggars not be able to bother the happy travellers constantly. Then the ICEs: IF they arrive on time you are lucky, and you are even more luckier, if they come at all, becauce cancelations or last SECOND track changes from track 19 to number 4. for instance are something the DB seems to be lovingly doing on a regular basis. That people are then not able to reach the train, that won't wait of course, speaks for itself! The most umcomfortable seats in 1.st and 2. class are the next thing: The latest version, that is installed has only one lever, that makes the backrest not realy recline but therefore will put you in such an uncomfortable position, that everytime you try to nap and relax your neck muscles, your head will drop forward down & oops your are awake again. Lovely! (irony & sarcasm) Also: Though there are supossedly "silent areas" where people 'ought to be able to relax, on a regular basis you will experience people who ignore these, and once more: nobody cares or the DB employees care? Hardly! Rules? They are only Pro Forma! That an ICE all of a sudden will stop in the middle of nowhere or even get routed wrongly is only the icing on the cake. So after having had to use this awful trainsystem and almost entirely the ICE, I am allowed to have an educated opinion I think. Oh yes, a last good piece of advice: Never use connecting trains, only direct connections or calculate a lot of time, lots of it in between. Less than 45. minutes? It is almost certain that you won't make it for one reason or another!!!!

I prefer the train - I've never been on a plane and I don't have a driver's license. When you book in advance, even a trip of almost 600km can cost you only 20-30€ in long-distance travel.

Many of those first ICE trains are not barrier-free for like disabled/ elderly people or mothers with strollers as there were/ are often staircases which you have to literally climb up in order to get on the train. Also a nice feature: between the wagons where the doors are, there are always displays showing the next stops, delays and, the fun part, they also show the current speed of the train. However, I wonder why the guy in the video took that much of a detour (first driving West, then all the way up North-East) when there are even direct routes from Frankfurt to Berlin or at least routes that directly go into the right direction.

I'll bet that at when you travelled train it was from Rovaniemi to Helsinki(?) Distance by train is about 850km. Those upstairs sleeping cabins is pretty nice. I've been travel that route many times. Last time was last october when I came from Helsinki to Rovaniemi. That trip by day train is quite boring but there is good food in restaurant car. Salmon soup with your favorite (😜😂) bread.. rye bread 😂

the seat control is still mechanical (!), compared to full electric for the french TGV plus the usb ports that I could not find in the ICE I took.
@BernhardGiner
@BernhardGiner 4 месяца назад
Note: usb was invented about 30 years ago. The ICE was also brand new back then. Back then, USB was used to connect e.g. printers with their own power connection to computers, not trains (not smartphones either). It would probably have taken soothsayers to come up with such an idea. Sure, they could have retrofitted. (And then again (USB-C)). But at least there's power there and you can use it to charge your laptop and your cell phone

We have a "kitchen" in the ICE, but yes, the meals are cooked in sealed "portion-bags" in a steam oven. However, the stuff is freshly made for the day one or two days in advance, no frozen stuff + everything is sourced and produced eco-friendly. (AND we are the only restaurant on board of your train, so )
