@@giobozzde You will NEED A GUIDE for any visit ... and I guess I could find enough to fill that month in just Berlin alone, which has a lot of different parts and just visiting one attraction will take 1-2 hours at least. A month really isnt much "for all of Germany" and doing "16 cities in 14 days" (like the stereotypical japanese tourist) isnt really a good idea.

It only took the people of Cologne a little over 600 years to build the cathedral ... Btw; how old is the U.S.A. 😂

true...kinda weird to think about. imagine nowadays any country or what ever would be like "okay lets start a 600 year building project" imagine what shit we could build with dedication in 600years now ^^
@DSP16569
@DSP16569 5 месяцев назад
@@Nuggetmonk It only take so long because they run out of money. In the 13th century (crusade times) some knights from cologne brought some relict from the three wise men to Cologne (No there is no proof that these bones are really the bones of the three wise men). These relicts where stored in the old Cathedral in Cologne and Cologne became the "hot spot" to pilger. They made a lot of money from these "tourists" and decided that the old Cathedral (from the 9th century - an ugly brick stone church) is not representative enough to present the holiest relicts north of the Alps. In 1248 they started to build the new Cathedral and as long the money from the pilgrims allowed, they could build more and more parts of the church. In 1528 something strange happend - A Guy named Martin Luther wrote "95 reasons why the catholic church is wrong" and a split into roman catholic and protestants was done. Some wars (about who is right) started and worst: Paying the Colgone Bishop some money to get rid of your sins (paying yourself a stairway to heaven...) wasn't the hot deal anymore. So they run out of funding and stopped wih the construction until From 1770 (approx - Starting of the Industrialisation in Europe and Germany) Germans where in a romatic mood. They wrote poems about "the good old times with Knights and Princesses in Danger - Honor and Knights-Ethics, good Kings and evil stepmothers, Some Brothers collected the old Stories of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and so on. Also two Guys (in this romantic mood) with some wealth got the idea; how wonderful it would be to finish the Church and bring it to "old Glory". They started to search for the original plans from the 13th century in all of Europe. And (maybe a miracle) they found them. Additional after Napoleon got a kicked in the A...s at Waterloo (not the station in London, the little town in Belgium) the former french occupied Rhine area was assigned to Prussia (Now they where all Prussians) in a "How to fix the mess, Napolean has done"-conference in Vienna. But a little bit like the Bavarians - The people in the "Rheinland" didn't get best friends with "Prussia". Meanwhile the two Guys with help from "Celebs of the Time" like Goethe made a advertising Campaign on the "GoFundMe" of the time (Newspapers): "Save the Cologne Church" - We need Money to finish this great church and made it to the proud of German architecture. Goal: A lot of $$$, really a lot". The public relations office of the prussian king must have heard of this Campaign and got the Idea: "OK we own the Rhine area now but they think we do not care about them. What's with a "The King loves you" campaign? - Let the King and the prussian state invest some Money into some symbols and landmarks of the rhine area and show the People that you care about them and their history and culture". Campaign approved and next to some important landmark Castles at the rhine river that where completly renovated and rebuild the King declared the finishing of the cologne cathedral as "a project of national importance" and promissed that he will double every penny the two guys make with their Campaign to finish the church. And so the people of cologne could start to finish the Cathedral in 1848 (with some changes to the original plans) and in 1880 the "Cathedral Church of Saint Peter" (short the Cologne Cathedral) could be official inaugurated by the Bishop of Cologne and opened to the public (with the prussian King as guest - Public Relations - you know).

The tower of the Cologne Cathedral is by far not 1400 meters high, but only 157,22 m. It has been the second highest building in the world for some time (the highest was the Münster in Ulm, another Cathedral in Germany, about 4 m higher). Also it's a different thing to walk up stairs or a ramp. And it also depends on the steps of the stairs. Stairs like the ones in the dome of cologne aren't friendly to human knees, since they are pretty worn out over all that time they are harder to walk on than more modern stairs are.

The train from Frankfurt Central via Frankfurt airport to Cologne drives on a special track constructed primarily next to the Autobahn A3. But it is an ICE sprinter train going up to 300km/h. So the trip takes roughly an hour with two stops along the way (assuming the Deutsche Bahn doesn't flub it like usual 😂). Edit: warning, once you taste a good Döner you'll be hooked for life. You will crave it again and again. It's like crack, heroin, and cocaine rolled into one for the addiction level, but fortunately it doesn't hurt your health (as much) unless you over eat.😂 Edit 2: cathedrals like the Kölner Dom were conceptualized during the times of extreme Christian dominance in Europe. The church was everywhere, and involved in everything. Even kings took their legitimation from the heavenly mandate of their divinely inspired rulership. Something we today can't understand anymore, but it was commonplace (and at least accepted, by the general populace). People craved paradise at the end of their lives. They believed if they participated in the construction of a cathedral, the physical representation of God on Earth, a house of worship, they'd be assured a place in heaven after death. Or at least have a much shorter period in purgatory. The participation amount mattered a LOT back then. If you worked physically you'd have a good chance but if you donated huge amounts of money your chance was even greater. As such the Catholic church (mind you, when they started there was ONLY the Catholic church, period; protestantism hadn't occured yet) built cathedrals all over the place. Each city wanted to demonstrate their wealth as well as devotion to the church by building the biggest cathedral around. Obviously static calculations were, let's say, rudimentary back then. Building accidents were rampant as walls or pillars collapsed, or changes to the structure were made during the construction period. Even if the payment of menial physical workers was a pittance, skilled labor was fairly well paid, so wages still dug deep into the coffers of the builders. Considering that often times the officials behind the construction were corrupt and dipped their greedy fingers into said coffers regularly didn't really help matters. That drove up the cost of the construction to astronomical heights, often bankrupting the local parish. Or at least halting the construction period until the next donation drive had gathered enough money for the next construction phase. The original architects knew that they themselves would never see their project finished in their own life span, yet they were willing to do it anyway, out of a fervent belief in the scholastic (original meaning, not the modern meaning) teachings of the Church. They believed that they had started a long lasting work in the praise of God which would ultimately grant them access to heaven.

Hello from Switzerland, I still remember around 30 years ago when I went to a trade fair in Cologne, got off the train, out of the station, the first thing I saw was not the Cologne Cathedral, but a relatively large police presence (due to... possible riots by football fans). For me it was quite disturbing, I didn't know anything like that in Switzerland at the time (unfortunately it's often necessary now). Only after I had digested the shock did I see the cathedral.

Keep it going. Always interesting, respectful and educated. And as interested and curious as you are. There is no other way to learn better about our world and all the countries and cultures! Just on the video you watch: It's always strange to me when others talking positive about going by train in germany. I don't like it, because they are always late and it's not always so smooth as in that video. As this guy was lucky to go with out "high velocity trains" on one of the better tracks of the country. But if you really want to know how great it can be to go by train, go visit japan, seriously! 🙂 That said am still happy that he liked traveling by train here. "Spezi" was invented for the german market. "Spezi" is a brand by itself, so other companies call it like "Mezzo Mix"(Coca Cola) or "SchwipSchwap" (Pepsi). And all others that sell a similar product just "Cola Mix" It's like mixing Cola and Fanta/Orange Limonade, but still not quite that. You really have to taste it, to know what I mean. And if that cn is too small, go to a supermarket where you get bottles from 0,5 liter up to 2 liter. 😁 And regardin that "it looks like fake": Considert hat germany is a countr with a history that goes back to the Romans. The Dome was build during medieval times. And the area arround it has changed, of course. And that'y why some places in germany look like "unreal". But to be honest I guess I had a similar feeling while I visited Japan (I know I mentioned that country before) as they have even a better way how to mix past and present to gether. In the architecture, but generaly spoken in their culture. They preserv traditions but are very much open for the present and the future. Germany can be that you can't have both, somehow.

@@DSP16569 You won't get a kebab with pork - it doesn't exist 😉. Because the kebab was invented by a Turk - and he was/is a Muslim. And Muslims don't eat pork. I know kebabs with lamb and mutton, beef and turkey. Turkey meat is/was also used for cost reasons. The profit is higher there.

Doner kebab was “invented” by Turkish guest workers in Berlin. And as we all know, they are Muslims, so they don't eat pork. Lamb, mutton and beef/veal are preferred there.

Im a bit confused as i thought Germany did a döner like Denmark. This looks like a pita bread and not a roll where you cant see whats inside. Here its a dürum so maybe thays just another Turkish way to do it. But in England where they clal it doner, i guess they didnt get the Ö right? They had the roll version too. But they called it doner and not dürum.? In fact they pronounced it like Madonna, so you got a lot of jokes about a Madonna kebab.. Mt fave is a dürum with lamb but thats so hard to find these days. But in the late 70's and early 80's that's what you got in London. Lamb beats everything.. And the garlic sauce.. Yummy 😊

The roll version is dürüm, the pita bread version is also called kebab. In Germany when people say Döner, we usually mean the pita bread version. If we mean the roll version we say dürüm

The tower of the Cologne Cathedral is by far not 1400 meters high, but only 157,22 m. It has been the second highest building in the world for some time (the highest was the Münster in Ulm, another Cathedral in Germany, about 4 m higher). But today there are higher skyscrapers, the highest is Burj Khalifa with 828 m.

@@judywe4941 I thought he said 1400 meters. must have meant feet then. Yes, that makes more sense, come to think of it… so that would be 515 feet. a stair is not one foot high, though, so that is 533 steps up. What is quite a bit, nevertheless, going UP… possibly around 18-20 floors…

@judywe4941
@judywe4941 5 месяцев назад
The Cathedral had some damage, but not too serious . It is said it may have been spared, because the pilots used it as a landmark for orientation. The Cathedral itself was not relevant, but the trainstation and bridges next to it. 70% of Cologne had been destroyed and they still find about 20 unexploded bombs per year during construction works in Cologne.

May the flight be expensive, but if u r nice and calm, u'll find thousand of people who will invite u. Advice: visit Hamburg!... for what reason? If u have to asked that u have no idea of Reeperbahn, Hafen or anything else! Hit me up if u need a sleeping place... by the way... hotels r not cheap here (sometimes cheap but no what the payment means!) 🙂

The dome of Cologne was build between 1248! to 1880 and is over 600 years old, that is why it looks so out of place. It was bombed and heavily damaged by the allied bombing campaign during WWII but we rebuild it.

People might stare, but that has nothing to do with how you look. It is just a german thing. Lastly, most folks under 50 can speak english. Most folks under 30/40 are quite fluent. I climbed Eifel tower till the second floor and Dom Cathedral in Utrecht (about 100 meters). I rather walk 5 miles straight then climb stairs 100 meters in height😅, but both are attainable for people with medium to low fitness level
