GERMANY: Health insurance costs explode! Will dentures soon only be available for the rich?
The costs in the health care system are exploding and the financial situation of many statutory health insurance companies is strained. Real solutions are not yet in sight. The head of the innovative health insurance companies, Ralf Hermes, even thinks it is conceivable that dental care could be removed from the health insurance companies' list of services. Dental prostheses, dental treatments and homeopathic services should therefore be drastically cut.
In an interview, Hermes explains that statutory health insurance companies should continue to provide basic care. There are already co-payments, but the old solutions no longer work. This is why dental prostheses also need to be rethought. Hermes emphasizes the importance of prevention, especially in schools and kindergartens, in order to save costs in the long term. Good dental care can save on dental prostheses and thus reduce costs.
When asked whether untreated dental problems could lead to greater health and financial problems, Hermes replied that good prevention would prevent such problems. Poor dental care is often a problem in childhood that should be avoided. Individual cases of poor dental care must be solved in other ways, as they are often the result of the patient's own fault.
Hermes suggests that preventive measures should be financed by the state and local authorities. This is already the case in other European countries and must be consistently developed in Germany as well. He sees the need to completely rethink the health system. More co-payments and additional insurance for dental prostheses as well as optional tariffs for specialists could lead to a reduction in contribution rates and thus ease the burden on the labor factor.
A complete rethink of the current system is necessary, concluded Hermes. Contributions should be reduced to make the system more sustainable and financially viable.
