Dylan, my son and I had three ICE trips when we visited Germany in 2019. They ae a great way to get around Germany (travelled Berlin to Cologne and Cologne to Frankfurt Flughafen) while on a separate occassion had a day trip between Cologne and Amsterdam. I’d recommend travelling Klasse 1 and we did not find the food prices excessive. Once you get used to the apparent illogical seat numbering system and the somewhat helpful carriage positioning indicators on the platforms (A through D, E....), everything else falls into place. These trains are a realistic alternative to air travel in Western Europe given Bahnhofen are generally located close to city centres (where tourists tend to stay) rather than airports that are located outside city centres. Tschuess aus Australien.
@stephanweinberger
@stephanweinberger 3 года назад
The seat numbering seems illogical, but there is actually a system to it. The goal is to keep seat reservations consistent internationally and over different types of cars. If you travel as a family and book four adjacent seats, they will (almost) always be adjacent, even if cars need to be swapped out. Even in case a first-class car is used to replace a 2nd class, the seats will stay together. The system is based on groups of 8 seats in two rows, as this is historically the maximum number of seats in a compartment. The first one or two digits are the "compartment number", the last digit is the seat number. The arrangement of those is 1 2 3 8 7 4 5 6 Seats with even numbers always face in the same direction, as do the seats with odd numbers. Seats 5&6 are always window seats, and 1&2 are either seats at the corridor (in a compartment) or also window seats (in an open car). Seats 3, 4, 7, and 8 are in the middle; in a 6-seat compartment or 2-1 arrangement there are no seats 7 & 8.

Okay, Frankfurt-Paris is almost 400 miles, Dallas-Austin 200 miles. With an HSR network in TX, it could be faster. By the way, the fact that it's 2 countries doesn't even matter anymore in today's united Europe. It's a wonderful achievement considering the two countries fought many bitter wars in the past.

@@dred05m61 Really? I wouldn't have thought of that now! There can also be a union of sovereign states. The EU is a confederation of states, not a federal state like the USA. Nevertheless, it is a union that shares common values, a common currency, no customs borders, freedom of movement for all citizens and many other things in common. Nobody wants a European federal state either, the countries are too culturally different for that. And when I look at how divided the states of the USA are among themselves, I doubt that this is really a union!

@@ruhri0411 I'm French, and going to Germany feel the same as going to the US. We're seperated countries. The currency or the borders don't matters. We don't speak the same language, we don't have the same culture.
@ruhri0411
@ruhri0411 Год назад
@@TheMangazixy I also never claimed that we are one country. The culture is different, of course. Nevertheless, there is a huge difference between going to the US and Germany. In the US, you have to go through a humiliating entry procedure with fingerprints, photos and stupid questions. You have to exchange money. We pay with a common currency, there are no borders between our countries. There are many people in the border regions who live in one country and work in the other, you don't have to worry about your health insurance at all when you go to another EU country. If you get sick, you get good treatment. If you cross the border, you can use your mobile phone contract just like at home. You can't do that in the USA. There are many other facilitations that make borders completely invisible. The economies of our countries are closely intertwined. The most important thing is that because of all these processes, this unspeakable hereditary enmity between our countries is history and we defend ourselves together against enemies of our liberal democracies. The EU is also not a common state for our countries, it is a confederation of states that pursues common goals for the benefit of its members. We should honour the great statesmen Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer, who laid the foundations for the EU through their personal friendship and their visions!

You know back ""then"" a board restaurant was a real restaurant witch a kitchen and fresh made food and plastic packt crap. If I have to choose between pre packt plastic crap i rather buy my own brand and not the DB crap. If they brought back a dining experience back, some schnitzel or food that makes the transition to the country you go easier towards there habits. I could be persuaded to dine there. But hey the selection is worse then at a rancid Imbiss in the darkest of corners of a Train Station at night and fog. Its not a Boardbistro its a Bordshitstro. Dining in trains is disappointment. Not mention German food is soilder food, Simple to make , last long and there is not a over abundance of finesse needed to prepare it unlike the so called hon hon hon food knowing a selective French or Italians or Spaniards with there 5 star kitchens. I am fortunate to have travelled many times between Paris and Frankfurt, and always chose the D.B service. The ICE3 train is immaculate, with a quality of finish that is without equal. Even after 8 years service, the trains don't rattle or squeak ! The SNCF TGV Duplex is also a wonderful train, and they are the alternative on the route to Frankfurt. Unfortunately, the catering on SNCF is poor in comparison to D.B, and for such a prestige route, the D.B win hands down !

The problem with ICE trains often late it’s because of DB wanted to reach every villages, towns, and small cities by train. RB (regional bahn) are sharing the same tracks as the ICE, thus if one of them were late, it will disrupt the entire schedule for the entire day. I’ve lived in Germany for a few years, on normal working days all i did was chasing trains. 🙈 P.S : try to look their Sparpreis (saver fare) section on their website. I’ve managed to snatch 1st class ticket for 30€ a few times. Book in advance, they always have a good deal on their Sparpreis fahrkarte. Good luck. LG aus den Niederlanden

You explain the train very well, it is magnificent, for only 10 € more you could take the first class, you did well to take advantage of it, obviously. especially for a train that crosses several countries. Yes, very high speed trains (over 270km / h) are my favorite. You are adorable. I often watch your old videos several times, and I like all of them a lot. Thank you very much to you again, Dylan! Thank you so much.

199mph (320km/h) does sound really fast. HS2 once built will have trains travelling up to 200mph (321km/h). Which is 1mph faster I think.

Well-done trip report here and it's the same DB BR407 Stuttgart to Dortmund Hbf via Haputstrecke Rhein-Ruhr Duisburg Essen Bochum route or the Rhein-Ruhr Osten Dusseldorf Wuppertal Hagen then Dortmund Hbf. If you look at the Double Decker on the left it's the Main Spessart Bahn RB54/55 to Bamberg via Würzburg. Your ICE Train can also be routed via the Appenweier-Strasbourg Railway by stopping at Karlsruhe after Mannheim then LGV Est at Strasbourg.

Hi Dylan, I do love trains, and the DB ICEs, the Frecchio Rossa, the TGV, Thalys, Bullets and if course the Eurostars are no exception. I have been fortunate to have travelled by the Tube in both London and Brussels. Then I made two journeys, both epic for me between London n Brussels by the Eurostar that averaged 125 mph till it crossed Dover into the Chunnel and it heartily did 199/200 mph after crossing into France till the outskirts of Brussels. I think.in Belgium too trains average a maximum 125 mph. About 4 days later after I flew from Zurich into London,my niece arranged for me a great trip from London to Liverpool Lime Street which enabled me to visit my favourite club Liverpool FC's stadium Anfield. I travelled by the Virgin which is of Alstom stock and does 125 mph. On the return on the same day, it stopped at Crew. And we crossed the huge bridge over the Mersey and the sight of its dry basin reminded me of the huge bridge over river Krishna at Vijayawada in South India. On the Virgin I experienced the tilt mechanism at high speeds, which was very enjoyable

I'm in Australia and we have no fast rail at all. We have HST Clones called Costs but they run on some of the worst tracks in Australia and only average 100kph. Melbourne has some fast trains that get up to 160kph but that's only for a few lines. Seeing European and UK Rail travel leaves a lot to be desired as to what could be realistically achieved in Australia if we didn't have Politicians in bed with the road and trucking lobbyists.
@moestrei
@moestrei 3 года назад
Those HST clones are the XPTs me thinks. Average 100kph? I recon that would be the top speed. In Straya everything sensible is a real mess: Renewable energy, trains, EVs, covid vaccination....the list goes on. Train rides in Australia would be sold as vintage train rides elsewhere, so they do have their own charme though. Sometimes overseas people ask why we don't elect another gov.....the answer is that we have the choice of very bad and really bad.

Thanks, Dylan, for my trip on a real ICE ! Fantastic at speed! Why is the speed limited in Germany? My only experience with ICE is a plastic, rechargeable at the pull of a lever battery powered table-top three-car look-alike model from 2005. Now there's a mouthful! Sorry! But it cost less than your breakfast! And it still works.

In Germany this connection uses standard rail tracks while the French site was newly built for the TGV. France has less than half the population desity of Germany, more space. But there are new high speed tracks in Germany, too, just not on this line.

Thanks Dylan for another detailed and interesting check. You noted that your arrival was around 15 mins late. Had you been in the UK some TOCs would have paid Delay Repay when a delay is 15 mins or more. One minus point of operators in mainland Europe is that their customer service is lacking when it comes to delays.
@alexmcwhirter6611
@alexmcwhirter6611 3 года назад
@@NonstopEurotrip Thanks and that's good to know. In the UK it may depend on the individual train operator. I always book direct and when claiming I find the refund process has improved over the years. I now find the money paid directly to my bank account in a couple of days. This was pre-Covid. The process now may be faster still as fewer trains (but on the other hand I suspect punctuality has improved as there are fewer trains to cause delays).
@DylansTravelReports
@DylansTravelReports 3 года назад
There is a minimum they have to give for delays but most keep very quiet about it and it's usually nowhere near as generous as in the UK.

@@oles7680 I read it has been taken out of service in 2017. I did this trip in 2010, and the train did break down as we returned into Germany. The reason given at the time was that the air conditioning overheated because it was an exceptionally warm summer, and the units were not designed to operate in temperatures above 35 °C.

If you download the Euro Train Simulator 2 from the Play Store you can drive an ICE from Munich to Paris and back and plan your own journeys. There's also a Eurostar journey through the Channel Tunnel from London to Paris, Brussels and through Germany to Munich. You need to have access to the custom mode to plan your own journeys which means completing tedious game levels first but it's worth it.

Another very nice reflection on your summer 2020 travels. Now, what mischief did you get up to the night before to cause you to oversleep your alarm? You don't have to answer that. I'm very impressed with the decor and layout of the ICE train and agree with your comments on the layout, decor (especially the panelling and lighting) seating, the availability of refreshments and so on. Your amazing latte looked a bit light on in the contents, although you probably had a slurp or two before filming it at your seat. My own special brew consists of a light teaspoon of Blend 43, plus a teaspoon of cappucino mixed with a further teaspoon of caramel flavoured latte with added milk and sugar to suit. Designed to keep you alert and perky for several hours, Looks like the scourge of graffiti is still prevalent in both Germany and France. The worldwide Union of Painters and Decorators has been busy there. Looking forward to our southern spring and the opportunity to travel more than 25km radius of home after the latest Melbourne lockdown. Stay safe and healthy and I look forward to next week's offering. Cheers.
