Also, Sacchi's fixation with playing Signori (Serie A's top goal scorer) on the left wing was bonkers.But yes, Baresi, Costacurta, Maldini, Donadoni, Zola all great players, Mancini too, though he never quite shone for Italy. It was a shame that Roberto Baggio missed this match.

@@kirilmihaylov1934 Bulgaria had great players and a fantastic Team in 1994 but in the 1st half against Italy, honestly they did not see the ball and were lucky that Italy scored only two goals because there was also a post hit by Albertini and a great save by the goalkeeper Mihailov on a lob again by Albertini. The match was already closed after 25 minutes if there had not been the lucky goal on a penalty kick just before the end of the first half, which was more due to carelessness of the Italian rearguard than anything else. The second half was hard-fought but will be remembered above all for Baggio's injury and not for anything else as Bulgaria in fact had zero chances.

Weil er sowohl beim Beckenbauer (eigentlich wollte der 1990 Uli Stein nach einer phantastischen Saison reaktivieren, aber Neuberger und Sepp Maier legten Veto ein) und bei Vogts (Illgners Frau Bianca und Vogts Ehefrau waren dicke "Kumpel") eine LOBBY hatte. :-) Vogts hatte irgendwann nach 1996 ja geäußert, daß es 1994 einer seiner größten Fehler war, auch nach der verkorksten EM 1992 weiter auf Illgner zu setzen. Ob wahr oder nicht.. boh :-)

Du darfst nicht vergessen, dass Bodo Illgner als damaliger Weltmeister so etwas wie ein WM-Bonus hatte, der während der WM94 in den USA aufgebraucht war. Dass Bodo Illgner es trotzdem zu Real Madrid geschafft hat, habe ich nie ganz verstanden, auch wenn er zwischen 96/97, 97/98 & 98/99 die klare Nummer eins im Kasten von Real Madrid war. Erst seine vielen Verletzungen in der Saison 99/00, warfen ihn zurück, so dass auch er einsah, dass nach der Saison 00/01 sein Vertrag im gegenseitigen Einvernehmen aufgelöst wurde
