Okay! I'm doing this today. Looked at a lot of videos but I like yours best. Someone left a peach pit in front of my door and instead of taking it as an insult I'm going to take it and make a tree.😏🌳
Fantastic! I hope it grows well for you and that you send a picture when it’s in the pot! Here’s part two of this series! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VfAqMcFpisA.html
Hey Steve, I stumble across this video several months ago & had just eaten a peach, so I thought , why not. 1st surprise, I got double pods inside the pit, so two seeds to try. 2nd surprise, during the wet paper towel thing, the seeds separated into four separate rooted seeds. Two still had the wings with good roots & two were single seeds with puny roots, but I planted all of them anyway. Today, I have one with about a 2" stem 3 leaves starting to show, the other three are still green & the 2 singles split & have those wings, all have roots. Just wanted to thank you for doing the video, I'm enjoying this journey. BTW, it took mine over a month to start roots.
That sounds like a polyembryonic seed which can be a clone of mother type seeds which is great. Mangos have the same thing happen. Some citrus too. It’s great when that happens always keep them cos there will be some like the mother and usually one from fertilization but even then they may all be clones. Just going on research I’m not 100% sure about how this works.
Thank you for getting right to it and making everything slow enough to follow along and crystal clear on what's to be done. I wish everyone made videos like this! Cheers! I'm going to germinate some peach seeds right now! : )
Can now say this absolutely works. Im right on track with the updates shown here (my ten days looks like his, etc). But I did soak the seeds for three days because I forgot about them. That said, the skin fell off in two pieces. Unfortunately, that was because the seed split in two. I matched them back up, put them in the paper towels anyway, and today I have a one inch peach tree after about 15 days from nutcracking. 😄
I can confirm that this works for apricots as well. It seems the cold stratification is only necessary if you don't remove the hull and skin of the seed. My apricot seedling germinated within a week and has now been transplanted.
May be the stratification has allready been done in transit. Also it's a little sketchy that a mediterreinian plant that grows naturally in north africa would need an extended period of stratification at all.
Thank you for this video! My grandmother had peach trees and I been wanting to grow them. I know my grandmother didn't do that whole 3 months in the fridge thing. This is what I was looking for
Lol my grandma too. When I was asking her for advice she was like “do you think when Johnny Appleseed brought apple trees to the US that he did the fridge step?” -> wisdom.
Thank you so much for showing us how to do this! Last summer I got two cases of amazing peaches from a farm here in the DFW area and canned most of them. I had so many pits left over that I had to save some of them to see if I can figure out how to grow a few of them into trees. Now I know what to do and will start the process today!
This is such a great way to germinate peach seeds. In ten days I had a seedling that is two inches tall and ready to sprout leaves. Thank You! I’ll keep you posted. It’s an ice Princess white peach!
Fantastic! I’m glad it helped and l look forward to reading about your peach seedling progress! Here’s part 2 and 3 of this video series on my new channel! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VfAqMcFpisA.html
This method works… and very well, might I add. I have three different strains of peaches that have germinated. The Ice Princess Peaches are doing very well. To those who are trying this…. Remember, this is a tree and once these take… there’s a root system. Keep the base of the pots well drained to prevent root rot.
Ooh man thank you so much! My daughter loves nectarines and this trick worked! She just planted our first attempt (14 exact days) and is thriving in soil 🤙🏼! Thanks for the trick!!
@@TheTexasGardener aye yes! Haha thank you for checking in. I actually picked up a heat mat and light for the winter, so far so great she is growing like a fast and healthy and my daughter has been doing well with care.
Tried it and it pretty much works with any stone fruit seed. Tried it so far both on apricots, peaches/nectarines, plums both greengage, prune plums ie Prunus Domestica and japanese plums ie Prunus Salicina and it all seems to work well! I would say I have near 100% germination rate with this trick! Works well even with old dried out seeds like raw shelled sweet apricot kernels that you can buy for eating in the same way as almonds lol. Weird how we are told to cold stratify and wait months and even years for the pits to sprout by themselves when you seemingly can do just this and save time and possibly guarantee that more seeds end up sprouting. Have you tried using this trick on other fruit seeds like apples and pears? I guess these are much harder to do with due to their small size but it wouldn't surprise me if this tricks works on many more Rose family(Rosaceae) plants. I am going to keep trying this trick with more plums and cherry plums which I assume all will work well and then also pear and apple seeds just to see if it works with them too.
Works with apple seeds and lemon seeds. I do this same process with avocado seeds but it takes a little longer for avocado seeds. They start sprouting 2-4 weeks. Thanks for watching!
@@TheTexasGardener Hey .. yes I am. I’m attempting peach and apricot .. I’ve got some tomatoes going from seeds out of store bought tomatoes. I was inspired by my son, who has raised some muscadine grape for 2 years (we just put them in the ground), and he’s got some pomegranates going now.
@@SteveShoemake Hey - the peach didn’t make it but the apricot is thriving - about 4 foot tall now. Unfortunately, I discovered apricots don’t thrive in my location (south GA), so .. I may try planting it next to my tall fence anyway

It may be because they've been in cold storage from the farm to the fridge so chill hour requirements may have been satisfied. I planted a couple of apricots seeds a few days ago and I'm waiting for them to germinate now.
Great video. I would have planted at 10 days. But the idea of skipping cold stratification is a good way to skip a year. If you sprout them in summer by spring you can graft the seedlings onto a mature tree and probably get fruit from it the following year. If you are hybridizing that is quick results for a fruit tree. Thanks
@@ThanhTran-33333 You can do it either way depending on what your goal is. It you have a good variety you want to propagate you can take scions from it and graft them onto rootstock, that can be seedlings, mature trees or just a pice of root. If you are developing a new variety, usually by hybridization, then you can use the method I described above. Some trees can take several years to mature but if you graft a seedling on a mature tree you will likely reduce the time to maturity and know if it's a keeper or not.
Thanks so much for this video! Been saving my pits from two different kind of peaches, a plouot, and a nectarine. Just broke my pits and put my seeds to soak. Praying they all start here in north Louisiana!
Haha! Thanks! Here's part 2 follow up for this peach tree! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VfAqMcFpisA.html The first two pits opened more easily that I was expecting. The 3rd one the seed flew out on the table!
@@TheTexasGardener What I used is a garlic compresser, so no projectiles fly out. If you position the seed to where the seam is sticking out and press, it should create a crack along the seams, which allows you to open it up and pull out an untouched seed. It worked for me at least.
Put it in a cloth and hold it on its edge over a hard surface. Then hit the edge with a hammer or another hard object. Hit it gently until it cracks. It'll make a pop sound. Turn it over and hit the opposite side a couple of times until you hear a similar pop. Gently pry the hull halves apart and you've got the seed.
This is fantastic! I wasn’t aware you had to crack the “stone”. I just followed an idea my kids had and plant a nectarine that was turning. I’m very tempted to try starting another this way!🤩🤗 the one we planted last summer has a few roots, but it’s progressing as we’d hoped. Thank you for sharing this!🙏🏽🌻
Glad you liked the video! I’ve found doing it this way starts much faster and my kids can quickly see the progress. I’ve used this same process of peeling the seed coating for apples, avocados, lemons, peaches and nectarines! I’ll have a nectarine video soon! Thanks for watching!

I was so impressed when I saw this one and successfully germinated a couple of seeds. But after two years of taking care and doing everything to protect the seedlings, this winter, I lost the only surviving seedling. Besides this, I sowed 7/8 seeds outside and left them to stay in the ground. I am very happy to see the new 5 seedlings popped and growing strong and healthy. I tried for apple and observed that growing and germinating seedlings naturally is better and more reliable. I got almost 150 apple seedlings and am still growing naturally and satisfied with the progress of the help of nature!

Glad you found the video and I hope it goes well for you! Start several at the same time so you can take the ones that are doing well. Thanks for watching and let me know how it goes!
Trying this. BIL brought me some peaches and they're so ripe a few of the pits split open just cutting them in half, best peaches I've tasted in a long time. Found this in search and I'm soaking them right now.
I bought a flat of “canning” peaches about a month ago and saved the seeds. Cracked the shells and put the seeds not touching each other, on damp paper towels sprinkled with cinnamon in a sealed container in my fridge. Today, I found six had roots so planted those. The others I peeled off the seed coats, rinsed in cinnamon and put back into the fridge as before. In a day or so, I’ll pull them out and try sprouting them in soil inside a tray. God willing, I’ll have a small peach orchard by spring!

just a little info about sprouting i sprout pecan nuts the same way do it in jan i use about a dozen pecans lay on its side about 1 inch deep in good potting soil damppen place in indirect sun light dont let it freeze in about 6-8 weeks you should see tiny pink shoot growing then two leaves as weather warms let them have about 1 hr sun shine the bring back in as they grow add a little more sun time ive had about 80% success do ing this use a deep bucket for these so the tap root will have room to grow i made the mistake one time the tap root grew in coil like a spring ( too small bucket) use 5 gal bucket with drain holes if you can if grows leaves it has a tap root it comes out first but you dont see it let it grow to 12in tall before moving to its own bucket P S dont do anything to the pecans except put in soil

Last year I did it to a lemon seed. A few of them sprouted and one survived for this year as I live in a cold climate. This year I did again and I got 2 more little lemon trees. My last year’s lemon tree is about 15 inches tall . I can’t load a pic here. It works folks. It works for everything. I did to a mango seed, it worked well, but didn’t survive the cold winter here. If you live down south, you have lots of options and variety of tree seeds to germinate yourself, fast and easy. Nothing is like to see success result , it’s so satisfying.

I didn’t know you had to crack open the pit to get the almond looking seed inside. I just took the entire pit, put it in a shallow dish of water that covered just the bottom half of the pit and left it on my kitchen counter. In a few days the pit split open on its own and the inner seed started to sprout. I let it sit a few more days in the shallow dish, replenishing the water as needed, then just completely pulled open the pit part and the coating on the seed pretty much peeled right off with it. Looked just like your end result in a lot less time with a lot less work. Just planted. Hope it works🤞

Thing I have found with growing peach trees from pits or seed is the fruit from the new tree will not have a cling free pit which makes canning them a pain in the butt.
A tree grown from a pit is like a child from two parents. It will not be a clone of either one but a mixture of the two, could be better tasting or worse, just different than both. You will need to grow a new tree from any seed and the graft from the existing tree you want to clone. That is the only way to continue that exact fruit you want.
After watching this vide, RU-vid recommended another video which I thought was yours because it had the same video as yours. I think someone used your video on a another channel and he didn't credit you. The channel is called TheTexas Gardener, he posted the video 2 months ago.

Hey Steve - tried your method with two separate containers holding x5 kernels in each container. Just checked on the seeds today (7 days later), and both containers have mold in it. Any advise?
Yes, you may have put in too much water. I also recommend leaving the container slightly open so some air can get in. Try again but less water or make sure the container get me some air. Others have tried adding some cinnamon but I haven’t tried that so try at your own risk. I’ve heard some success from using a peroxide spray but I haven’t tried that either. Dry your current ones out some and see if they recover or try again with new seeds and keep the container open. Thanks and good luck!

Thanks for this, one question. After watching this I got a couple nectarine pits but did not crack open for a week or so. The seeds came out dry and pretty flat are they worth planting or do I need to extract that seed right after eating the fruit. Thanks again!
Ya can’t leave them too long in my experience they tend to dry out too much and go flat and don’t sprout. I also had heaps to mushy and yuck too cos I kept them too long in a moist container with the she’ll still on them. I was trying to germinate them with the shell on and see what happened but they all died.

Thanks for your comment and I hope it goes well. Here’s another tip - start multiple seeds if you have them. Sometimes one may not be a viable seed and if you have several then you can plant them all or just use the one with the better root. Did you see part 2 and 3? Thanks for watching!

I started in late October but kept the plant indoors on a sunny window sill until spring time. Zone 8. Here’s part 2 and part 3 of this peach tree series: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VfAqMcFpisA.html Thanks for watching!
I covered with dark towel and set on a shelf in my room - not in direct sunlight. The room was normal room temperature and it worked well! Hope you try it - it’s fun!
@@teliahsieh I did not always add water - only if the paper towel was dried out - usually around day 5 to 7. Sometimes I have not added any water during the process. Just check and add if it's dried out all the way. What time of the year should you do this? Also, what kind of condition should the seed be under? Like after eating a peach, germinate right away? Or dry and collect seeds over a period of time and then do a bunch???
Let the seeds dry out a few days then open the pots and start the process. You can do it any time of the year if you have a pot to use and keep it by the window sill where it gets some sun. Then transplant in early spring depending on your climate. Thanks for watching! I did this! I soaked and peeled 5 pits/seeds 2 weeks ago! Today, 3 of those had teeny tiny roots started. The other 2 looked like they had mildewed. So I potted the 3 into 3 small pots. 🤞 we get growth! Is there any way to post pics of the past 2 weeks progression on here?
Fantastic! You should get growth! I’m not sure about the picture posting in here. Did you see part 2 and part 3 of the peach tree series follow up to this one? Thanks for watching!

Root will most likely form about the same time as in this video maybe a little later. Best time to put outside would be when the weather is most hospitable for your plant and area. Otherwise you can keep inside on a window sill until the weather is right. Thanks for watching!

I have a question. So I'm new to fruit planting. I grew up with peach,apple,pear,figs,strawberries,grapes.. in yard . My mom had a green thumb an arm haha. Anyway I'm in hot ,humid louisiana. You are a southern man you know my pain. How can I do strawberries ,apples, does your secret work on any seed Also I have planted 2 grape vines purchased from home depot . 1 a few yes ago an 1 last year. I water them good everything needed. An they look amazing then one day I go out an they are sticks dried up dead . I'm not sure if hogs are eating them or what. My blue berry bush I planted last spring. Is already trying to produce I think . It has buds all of a sudden everywhere. Any advice for me .
I’m growing strawberries this year and they’ve done well and produced already. Be sure to choose one that grows well in your area. I’m growing chandler strawberries and I check them almost daily to make sure they aren’t too dry during these hot summer months. I’m growing apple trees as well. I’ve only tried the peel and damp paper towel with apples, peaches, lemon, and avocados. It might work with others - give it a try and thanks for watching!
@@SteveShoemake apples, lemon, and avacado do not need to be peeled, they will start if the conditions are right (damp long enough, they are easy to grow) I suspect this will work for all stonefruit varieties, and probably most of the others that require cold stratification (going to try cherries soon since I keep botching them)
@@SteveShoemake Everything above ground died back this past Christmas because it got really cold but they sent new shoots up in late winter and rapidly grew to almost 3 meters tall by now.
Absolutely you can. I’ve just found that it germinates faster for me and more of the seeds successfully start if I do it this way. Thanks for watching!
