Learn how to grow peaches from a seed. I share some tips for growing a peach tree from a pit effectively. Using cold stratification, germinating peach trees is a simple process and fun as well! In this video we discuss what you can expect when growing fruit trees from seed, genetic variation and how we can guarantee a fruit-producing tree.
The peach (Prunus persica) is a popular type of stone fruit mainly cultivated in dry, temperate climates with suitably cold winters. Native to China, the peach was evidently cultivated in ancient times in the Orient and eventually spread to become a popular fruit in Europe about 2000 years ago.
The lush, juicy fruits of the peach tree typically have white or yellow flesh and a mic of sweet and tangy flavours. Nectarines are actually a type of peach (the same species) although they are regarded as a different fruits in the commercial fruit trade.

My experience with rooting peaches is breaking the seed out the hard shell is unnecessary. I got tired of doing this way and dumped all the shells with the seed in them into my compost heap. Out of 50 stone pits thrown in, 48 tiny saplings sprouted. I started transplanting them into individual pots as they were sprouting up from the compost heap. Save some time and labor and let nature do her thang is my new way of growing.

that's brilliant Gary! I hear others also saying they get many saplings growing straight out of the compost, not cracking open the nut, just bang in the compost and wola! Here in Spain with the temps so high most stuff just rots in the compost bin, maybe in winter there would be more chance for that to happen.

What I have learned is that if you grow a tree from any type of pit like this you are more than likely not going to get the same variety of fruit from that tree, rather you'll get a tree that is the same as the root stock from the tree that the fruit came from since most fruit trees are grafted to root stock of a hardier variety.

You can use paper towel method by removing the brown skin layer from the seed(quite hard if you are gentle, soaking them then using your nails if they are long helps alot) , my strat is i put them in a margerine container with a soaked paper towel, a bit of cinnamon to battle the mold, place container in a airtight coolbox. Now the magic trick, use 2 disposable water bottles that retain heat well, fill them with hot water and place them in the coolbox with the seeds container, do every morning and watch your babys sprout in 2 weeks approx. Succeeded 1 time out of 4 attempts(other seeds broke in half because i was to rough when peeling skill)

I tried to grow a peach 🍑 tree 🌳 from a pit. I put the pit in potting soil and watered it continuously. Nothing happened. Winter came along with wind and storms. The container was blown to the grass and the following Spring there was a tree 🌳 😳. I know right? I saw 👀 the leaves a knew it was either peach 🍑 or nectarine since I had forgotten what was in the container next to the tree 🌳 😅. The second Spring I had flowers and peaches 🍑. Today it is taller than my roof even though I recently pruned it. It is about four and a half years old now. Amazing 👏 🙀 😯 how this all happened. Any way, thought I would share. Thanks for the tips on growing peaches 🍑 and cherries 🍒. Are apricots, plums, plumcots/pluots,, persimmons and apples 🍎 easy to plant? Thank you 😊

Don't drink, and you'll never have a hangover again. If you like cherries, eat them while you're hungover, and they taste just as great.

I've got a red flesh peach that's several years old from a seed I tossed out in my yard. That doesn't happen often but it's been a great tree. Took a full on freeze at 28F this year in full bloom and is hanging heavy with fruit. No clue how it pulled that one off? Amazed that there's anything on it at all. I was surprised that the peaches are very much like the original that the seed came from. Excellent peaches! I've got a couple of seeds from some very tasty white peaches I just recently had. I'm going to put your schooling to work and see if I can't get they rooted. Thanks!

Don't have any this year. I cut the tree completely back to lower it back to earth. Full of new growth but that's next years story. Just cut a nectarine down today making room for a new chicken coop. The frigid cold over winter killed all my figs back to the ground. They've grown back 6 to 7 feet after they finally got started late. Put a few figs on but they'll not ripen by September. Blasted squirrels are cutting all the persimmons out of the tree for some reason? Never seen that before. Bout to cut some squirrels out. Lol Been a rough year. Did get a pretty good haul of blueberries and my goose berries did half descent. Maybe next year Lord willing. :)

🤣😂 thanks Curtis, I'm trying to hit the mark of making a video every week but it's hard man, videos in general take me hours of editing. This last one was almost 4hours filming, then many many hours editing. I'm trying to get there, just need to organise a workflow. Hope your well mate!

Cracking open the hard shell is really easy with a bench vice, just crank it closed very slowly so it doesn't turn into shrapnel. Lay a small towel underneath to give the seed a gentle landing.

I did the refrigerator trick with pits from 5-6 peaches from my mother's peach tree. I am not a gardner by any means! I had peach trees/mature sprouts growing out the refrigerator butter storage 4-5 months later. I had forgot about them😂

Just planted my cherry seeds. I'm excited to see them grow. Two questions. How often towater? Don't want to over or under water. And at what point do you transplant to the outdoors?
@GreenthumbsGarden

if your wanting to grow it in the ground, then I would plant it early spring. In my cherry update i go through how I normally test to see if my plants want water, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O-yUBzcoeZM.html hope that helps :-)

Any new sapling root needs always to be moist. You want that taproot to go down far so I’d grow it in a big pot.

I used branch clippers then my teeth to crack the outer shell and it worked very well vs just tree trimmers. My trimmers were too sharp and sliced two in half. Had one that was already sprouting so that was cool. The pits were small for the small peaches I found. They were tiny but good.

Got to be careful using your teeth. Could crack your teeth causing you to need dental crowns which is not fun.

@rg2613

I’ve done the refrigerator method and putting the seeds in warm environment (80-90 degrees). The warm environment germinates the seeds 3x faster. I’m not sure why people keep promoting the refrigerator method of seed germination.

I just threw my pits into the flower bed and I got white nectarine and yellow peaches unbelievable 👩‍🌾 but of course they were in my flower beds I can’t transplant them cuz I don’t have any ground to transplant them. 😬👍😊👩‍🌾♥️ thanks for sharing ur ideas and I love ur videos I want to know when do you prune them, is it after the leaves have fallen or before the leaves falls off like in autumn before winter. Thank you
@GreenthumbsGarden
@GreenthumbsGarden Год назад
Great job Emy!! prune peach trees annually in spring, just as the buds swell and begin to turn pink. It's better to prune a little too late than too early.

First of all, thanks for the very helpful advices.... very much appreciated! I would like to know if it always is better to put any fruit seeds in a sealed back and in a cool spot to germinate? Thanks already for your advice! Cheers 🌼
@GreenthumbsGarden
@GreenthumbsGarden 2 года назад
hi Christiana, it depends on the seed. If it is a cold climate fruit, like apples, cherries, blueberry then they will need to be stratified to germinate. I warm climate plant, aka a Mango, does not need a cool spot.
