Gerry and James are “normal” coz they’re not from Derry. They see things as the rest of the world outside Derry sees it. I have family I Derry, I love them dearly and I go over whenever I can. It’s like their own wee world, everything that goes on in Derry Girls is true, only it’s ever so slightly exaggerated, but yeah it’s pretty real
In every Celtic family there is one well adjusted man surrounded by crazies and slowly doubting his own sanity. Tis just the culture. It keeps life interesting at least I will say
it's very clever that the two characters who often don't understand what's going on and try to bring sense, gerry and james, are the two that aren't from derry
I thought that until I heard the actor who played Granda Joe explain the thinking behind it: Joe was scared at the start that Mary would move down South with Gerry, where it was much safer than Derry, so he lashed out as a response. Then his wife died, who was the love of his life, and so he’s still grieving and takes it out on Gerry. Gerry doesn’t mind that much, and we see it at the end of Season 1 when the bombing is on TV and Gerry puts his hand on Granda Joe’s shoulder to comfort him. Gerry knows Joe has seen a lot of his friends die and been through a lot of suffering, which is why Joe lashes out a bit. But deep down, they do like each other.
Gerry deserves a Sainthood for managing to take all of the barbs at his expense in stride. I reckon that should Erin and James get married, he'd be the complete opposite of Joe towards James!
We'll never know. I'm baffled at the writer's decision to leave the lives of all the main characters uncertain. Their qualifications are unstated. Their occupations, love lives etc. didn't even get started.
@@andrewjones575 That's true, it did feel a little rushed, but who knows? Maybe the cast will reunite for a one off special, showing the gang in the future.
@@04williamsl Love lives are a part of most people's teen years. If they weren't going to cover it, why have characters being attracted to each other? Why have Erin & James kiss once?
@@andrewjones575 Why have them decide to not go any further with it? Because it's not a part of the main plot, which is growing up during the troubles.
“You don’t have the breadstick, Gerry!” received the usually-excellent delivery from Colm, but let’s just take a moment to acknowledge how great that line is in context 🙌🏻
I love how the show foreshadows James and Erin- Gerry being treated badly by everyone just like James is. I can see James being Erin's husband and getting the same treatment.
Gerry is what we call a nebbish...kind of a loser, entirely due to the perceptions of his friends and family. He's like Jerry on Parks and Rec...the viewer sees the characters as kind, solid, tender hearted, but the in universe characters see them as trials, inappropriate, dim and wholly exasperating.
I always laugh out loud during his scenes - he's just so unhinged, we can't help but stan 🤣🤣 he says one thing wrong and Joe immediately tells Mary to divorce him, I just can't 🤌🏻
It's a shame they ended such a solid and niche show. Deserves more seasons if the writer was willing. Edit: oh and Barristan Selmy and Lord Varys retired in Derry, Varys somehow escaping death. It was prob his clone.
Yes, the characters' lives are very uncertain. We don't know what qualifications they received, they haven't started their love lives, we don't know if any go to university or want to, nor what occupations they aim to have.
I have no idea, it's probably the Irish "Tough Love", in that they need someone to be the butt of all jokes. Still doesn't really explain why nobody, especially Mary, ever tells Joe to stop heckling Gerry when he's done nothing to warrant it.
He's my favourite character. I have it hard loving characters with the bully side so active (like Michelle or Joe). That's why Gerry, James and Clare are my top three. I know it's just a tv show, but it was irritating watching Joe being so mean to him for nothing haha
Gerry in the kitchen losing his peaceful side reminds me of Boule from B99, because he's adorable in general, but a total idiot when people is not doing it right on the kitchen
