Just wanted to say thank you for tips for gesture. I was always focused on proportions and anatomy and it felt like the energy of the pose was gone. Somehow it started to click more and more by watching your videos. The process of drawing gesture is a lot more enjoyable and the goal is more clear vs before drawing blindly with no understanding. Thank you again!

Delighted for you with the 20000 milestone. And I love the input about drawing with the "wrong" hand. I do it myself sometime too. I find that when I use my left hand/right brain, the hand draws what they eyes see and the the logic that the left hand wants to add to the process is silenced/overwritten... So often I use the left hand as the draftman in a drawing/painiting.

Congrats on 20k! I'm glad RU-vid recommended your videos to me. I've been working on finding a more relaxed way to get ideas down on paper and your thoughts on how to do just that are giving me much to think about. I'm still struggling with letting go but it is getting easier to see the page and placement of objects within it working from scribbles into finer and finer detail. It's a fun journey.

Wow, yay RU-vid Algorithm! so glad you found this channel .... and great to hear that you are enjoying the process, it's very creative to work in this way, make sure that your initial scribbles and placements of objects are really light, then when you start to work up finer detail you can slowly place more emphasis. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting :)

Love your content. This channel should have 20 million subscribers. I feel like yours is such a naturally liberating approach, and following your example has really helped me free up my arm and line-confidence. Just wondering: did you do all those exercises the way Nicolaides lays them out, or did you take the technique and just run with it the way you wanted? Can one really do contour drawing at the speeds he prescribes? I can't seem to. What a beautiful and frustrating book. Siobhan is my favorite name in the world, btw. Hoping my first-born is a girl, because that's what she's getting! Keep up the amazing work.

Hi Sean! Ah wow, what an incredible comment - that has truly made my day! So lovely to know that you would call your daughter Siobhan 😊 And equally happy to know that you appreciate and resonate with this approach to drawing. To answer your question about the book - I was lucky enough to have a figure drawing teacher who worked through the exercises throughout our curriculum so in effect, yes I did go through all the exercises, but not in a rigid way that the "schedules" within the book outline. So, I would say they are there to be explored and used and then take from them what feels natural to you. However, that being said... I'd be inclined to encourage you to take the blind drawing exercise as it is given! Haha, yes you should really try to do it that slowly!! Just once, give it a try - it is a profound drawing experience because you get to really focus in on observing (the drawing will look crazy to you , but the process is what's important). (also, if you can do this drawing something from life it's that much more potent as a shift in drawing)... Hope this helps!! Keep me posted on your work!

@Drawing-Life
@Drawing-Life 9 месяцев назад
Hi Cathy, do you try sighting? Using a pencil to take a measurement? that can be very helpful for overall proportions. Especially if drawing from life. Another thing I do to try to get correct proportion is to constantly compare what I'm drawing in any moment to something else. So, in the drawing above when i got to the hand, for example, I checked the spatial relationship between where the hand is compared to the body, and it was low down, almost near the knee. So that can really help. I might make a video on this topic. Thanks for this comment!

Hi Siobhan, I have a question, when I draw my figures I like to ground them, whether that is through the use of lightly sketching in the furniture the model is sitting on, or using heavy shadow lines under or to the side of the figure, however no matter how hard I try my figures always still look like they are floating in mid air. I was wondering if there is a solution to avoid my figures appearing to float? Thankyou. Also I would love to win that awesome drawing, fingers crossed, good luck to everyone :) .
@Drawing-Life
@Drawing-Life 9 месяцев назад
Hi Richard, great question!! My figures always float haha! But I embrace that now... 😆 I think your instinct to draw in the furniture the model is sitting on is great. I would say if you do that there really shouldn't be any issues. I guess with shading or heavy shadows, though, that might be a bit more difficult to pull off. Try going for something more subtle - sometimes something as simple as a line to indicate the ground plane can actually work very well. Without seeing your drawings myself, this is what I would suggest. I hope this helps?

I am really enjoying your channel. I have been wanting to get back to figurative drawing and painting for long time, and your videos have been the kick in the backside I needed. But being separated from working on the figure and life drawing for so long, I am finding I am finding some difficulty with keeping proportions and not overworking the facial features (especially with smaller sketchbook drawings).

Haha, glad to know these videos are useful as a kick in the backside! AH! features of the face are diffitcult for everyone! It's a good idea to lean towards not overworking that area. A good tip for proportion, if you are drawing from life is to using sighting. Just quickly take a measurement with your pencil., it really helps. I may do a video on how to do sighting.

Congratulations! Well deserved! Your videos are great, well thought, well presented and full of pertinent information. I have another question, or should I say remark. I find my "blind scribble figure studies" way more interesting than when I do the same study while looking at the model and my paper at the same time. Which technique is the best, according to you, to improve ones drawing very quickly? How about blind contour drawing studies ? I find those extremenly difficult to do ? Is it better to do contours blindly or looking at your paper and model? Last but not least, do you reach plateaus where you think you are not advancing or even think that your drawings are getting worse? Also the drawing you are giving away is very nice, very soft and elegant lines. Great!

AH! Another great question (questions!) that could be worth a whole video! To answer you briefly here... I personally found that the one exercise that dramatically improved my drawing the fastest is blind contour drawing - and don't look at the page, just look at the model. It helps you so much to really "see" things and that can be a game changer. I hope this helps, I'l make a video shortly about the plateau question. It's something most figure drawing students come up against.

Will figure drawing be a great starting point for learning to draw?. I have been learning how to draw for a while now, but my drawing path has been a bit disorganized because I am not sure how to apportion the proper time for each of the fundamentals. This ends with me slacking off or feeling demotivated. I am quite interested in the course you have on Udemy, to see if it will be a great starting for me or at least give me direction.
@Drawing-Life
@Drawing-Life 9 месяцев назад
Ah! This is great to hear - I do have a Drawing Fundamentals course, which I highly recommend that you check that out first. Then, I would suggest you could look at my course on Gesture Drawing, and following that you could take a look at the Figure Drawing course. So, that would be the order I would suggest. The reason being is that while I would love you to dive in and start drawing the figure - realistically it's better to have foundations first. I say this because I am biased towards figure drawing - this is where i actually learned to draw properly. However I do appreciate that i was missing the fundamentals. So for that reason - consider approaching the 3 courses in the order I suggest, and feel free to send me a message on Udemy if you have any questions or if you would like me to take a look at your drawings! 😊👍

First of all congratulations for your 20K subscribers..In this ocean (of subscribers), I am also a drop.. What I feel about gesture drawing, which was rightly explained by you, instead gestures, I tended to draw figures at very initial level, I think there are two ways to solve this issue.first, create gestures without leaving the pencil on the paper..second, only point out lines, somewhat arrow types to indicate actions..I don't support charcoal drawing for practice..i experienced that charcoal was a great cheating medium..it looks artistic, a self-delusional feeling of achievement..the best is of course, a fountain pen but it is too difficult.. I like the advice about drawing with non-functional hand..let me try and fail.. I dont know whether it is okay to say or not, I have watched lots of youtube channels, some are really useful, many of them just try to confuse students, and a few of them are absolutely dangerous in terms of understanding drawing..You are really very sincere, honest and your overall appearance is very pleasing...you are very underrated also. I have watched many videos of yours, I like the way you handle pencil, some subtle tips and I think personally you are a very nice human being..
@Drawing-Life

@Wackywanderlust 1545 .... you are in the draw to win the drawing which will be randomly selected.... but there's no doubt you WIN my un-dying appreciation and gratitude for such an awesome comment!! I really loved reading this - it gave me so much to think about in terms of technique and your kind words really lifted me up!! I feel very shy about posting videos of myself, but I also feel so passionate about sharing this approach that I do it anyway. so, just wanted to say thank you for your encouragement and lovely words. I agree, there are some very confusing teachings, and some are outright misleading. I know from my personal journey that if I had been told not to try gesture drawing, I would not have discovered my own voice in drawing. Which, for some people, could be devastating. Thanks for your points about how to develop gesture - keeping the pencil on the paper is a great one!! And, i'm so interested and inspired by what you say about charcoal - that is very true! It can indeed mask poor drawing skills and look very cool. Hmmm. good to remember that, and to always come back to the pure line work! All the best! Siobhan.

When attending life drawing sessions and getting the most out of these sessions should I practice speading up my process at home? I’d like to be considered in my mark making but feel panicked when attending sessions. Glen Vilppu , who I also follow on RU-vid stresses he isn’t drawing fast. I’m amazed how quickly some people can draw and yet other equally accomplished are slow. Is a life drawing session with timed poses purely an exercise or do “professional” artists intend to produce finished pieces? I’m not sure my expectations are realistic.

Hi Sarah! To answer your first question - no I don’t ‘think you should be practicing or focusing on speeding up your process. That’s counter productive. A gesture drawing is in fact not a “fast” drawing. I often make a gesture drawing very slowly. But because i focus on drawing the movement in the pose, the end result and the marks themselves LOOK like they are fast marks. In terms of what is the purpose of a life drawing session. it’s very dependent on the artist’s own process, but I would encourage you to see it as a practice. Most professional artist would agree. You likely won’t make flawless finished work in a life drawing session, but you can use the time instead to focus on the process of observing the model and exploring your mark making. I hope this answers you!

先生の線は無駄なく見事なのですが、合間にいれていく陰影が素晴らしいです。 木炭、ペンシルを立てたり、寝かしたり動きも様々ですが、 陰影の描き方に何か原則のようなものはありますか?

Hi Siobhan, it's been a long time since we've chatted on Instagram. I haven't been drawing for a few months now and as usual your videos encourage me. I hope all continues to go well for you.

Hi Andrea! Nice to get your comment!! Yeah I thought about that recently, that I hadn't seen you in my feed. But to be honest I am so bad at checking in on Instagram, so I'm not there as much either. I hope you get back into your drawing routine as soon as it's feasible and do-able! 👍❤
