Noriki Tamura grew up in Japan dreaming of one day starting his own business overseas. Then in 2005, he moved to Vancouver, Canada, and noticed hot dog carts on every corner. He knew he needed to spice up the market with some new flavors in order to stand out as top dog. Thus was born Japadog, a hot dog stand with a twist, featuring traditional Japanese flavors like radish, bonito flakes and nori. Business took off, and now Japadog has grown to eight food stalls, two restaurants and one food truck. By combining Japanese and Canadian food cultures, Noriki is serving up the best of both worlds.

@@christiantittmann3496 Nailed it! Just watched a doco about that, man rents are expensive in B.C.! I had a friend who moved there from here in Ontario and he was well off too and within a year he left B.C. cause it was too expensive. If people with money think it's expensive, then imagine the people without money?! Hence why East Hastings is considered the worst street in Canada and lots of homeless there.

Down here in Houston, we have something at certain restaurants called a Canada Roll (sometimes Alaska roll) that's usually crab/cucumber related. Pretty similar to a California roll but with more crab meat.

One of my earliest memories of japadog was when I bought one from a guy at one of the carts who had so many burns and band aids on his fingers but still had a big smile. Got me worried a bit.

Japadog is awesome. I remember the long lineup during the Olympics. Well worth the wait. I haven't had any in more than a year. I'm craving for it right now. I hope the business is still doing well. Have you had their ice cream one? I always wanted to try, but it is always sold out.

I remembered seeing everyone excited about Japadog during the 2010 Olympics XD It's so good if you want something more filling than your regular hotdog and after studying all day at school (since they had one truck park outside my campus)

This is interesting. One of the movies I watched at the Japanese Film Festival two years ago was about someone opening the first ever hot dog restaurant in (IIRC) Osaka back in the 1960s or 70s. Success didn't come easy.

Oh my goodness, I used to see these all the time when I was with my mom. We would walk around Vancouver sometimes, and one time we were waiting to cross the street, she said "japadog" and I was confused, until I seen the cart across the street and we bought some. Neat seeing it on yt

BLING-BLING BOY if you're satisfied with the standard cheap toppings on a hot dog, then yes. But if you're willing to try some higher quality items on your dog, it's reasonable. Plus you have to remember, it's in Canadian dollars. 1USD=1.25-1.30CAD now

Not everyone speaks English, we have a lot of immigrants in Canada. Most of the western side there’s English but the eastern side has more French.

Japanese food in general is insanely popular in Vancouver. Hundreds of sushi restaurants and ramen shops. Home of the inside-out roll after all. Though there surprisingly isn't that large of a Japanese population in Vancouver.
