Yeah nearly...was last to got before the wingsuiters. Had my rig packed freshly packed due to laziness and got a Linetwist....did not follow your advise to orient myself to the DZ and tried getting the twist out....going into the opposite direction...once the twist was out I turned and actually used the tip you also suggested pulling the back risers ... I just reached the DZ by 10feet 😅 had to fly directly against the wind to reach it , so actually I had no problem with the landing pattern....any more tips?

7 off landings in 300 jumps looool, I'm not even a wingsuiter. My home dz has heaps of off dropzone landing hazards but my landing areas have all been quite safe

@@Kossi85 Well if you have line twists you need to take care of those first for sure, you did well on that. Did you check your spot? And getting there by 10ft, was it dangerous? In afterthoughts, would you decide to land elsewhere in that situation?

@@SkydiveVibes Skydive Vibes yeah only dirt and shin high busheshes....the landings zone is nice soft grass...off landing would have been more dangerous as in one direction there was a automotive test track and an street and continuing the first direction only trees...so no in this case not...

Once I landed on a roof of an industrial building near my DZ. I was about 450 ft and I wasn´t sure if I make it back to the LZ because, I underestimated the Wind. I had two choices, try to get near the LZ but there was the risk flying against or on top of the fence, or try to Land on the roof on one of the buildings. I went full speed on the roof. Went well, did not hurt myself. They needed a ladder to rescue me. Climbing down the ladder was the worst part because I have a fear of heights 😁. Had to pay a beer fine 😜 I got my A-Licence since last weekend by the way 💪. Was one of the best days in my life 🙌. Blue skies

First of all thank you for keeping the spirit of skydiving alive!!! And now a bit different opinion: 1. Never keep your toggles stowed. Unstowing the toggles is a part of a canopy check. If the canopy is steerable and flareable. To find this out 300ft above the ground took life of some skydiving mates. 2. My suggestion with the wind in ur back is to use deep brakes, how deep? Really deep ;) like 3/4 or even more. Of course this depends on a canopy design but as a rule of thumb it is a good starting point 3. Into the wind I suggest using slight rear risers input.

Jozef Just what is your reasoning for the difference between wind at your back vs facing the wind? Please use the concept of airspeed and groundspeed in your explanation.

​@@AK-xe2ly The airspeed or groundspeed is not what is the most important in this concept. The concept of wind in your back is a concept of minimal sink speed which you will achieve in deep brakes. Basically the glide ratio you have on trim or deeper brakes is not very different, so your aim is to go for a minimal sink speed, so you can go with the "wind" as long as possible. If you want to use here the airspeed and ground speed then airspeed is lower and ground speed as well as in trim but the minimal sink speed is the key. The concept of flying into the wind is a bit more difficult as the input varies depending on the strength of the wind and your airspeed/sink speed dependence. With the very light wind you try to keep your speed and increase your glide ratio and that's with the appropriate rear risers input. The more strong is the wind the less input on rear risers you have to use and then in one moment you have to switch to front riser input at least to land not far behind you if this is necessary. Because of this is the flying into the wind more complex. Using your brakes in this case decreases your airspeed and ground speed as well. If you want to get more information about this try to find some papers about polar curve or speed polars (flyingworld.dk/Soaring/speed-polars.html) Just think about the canopy in a concept of using brakes=flaps, adding a lot of drag, using rear risers=changing an angle of attack without significant change of drag. The concept of flying airfoil is much much bigger than just these few rows of text, please think about it this way.

Yup. It was windier than we thought, I was moving backward under canopy towards the village. I was hanging on the front risers, landed just front of a strip of forrest.

I've always landed in my zone as a newbie still learning but I do remember one guy in training landed way off in the field lol, was kinda funny. He was safe and that's what mattered :)

A coach and I got ourselves into a pseudo long spot this weekend and am glad for advice like this! Why "pseudo long spot"...It was my second tracking dive...winds quickly jumped from 8 to 26 knots from exit to ~2000 ft (600m) so it pushed us way off course. Ended up having to crab into the wind (on a .9 WL canopy) to get back and made it with maybe a few hundred feet to spare, essentially doing a 180 degree flat turn onto the base leg. AND, we were over trees so there was no alternate landing spot. Luckily, no other canopies were around to make it more complex. 100% one of those "That was close...don't want to do that again..."

Good job! You only said “ That being said“ once ...... blue sky’s! Great tips. My wife (18 jumps) landed in a plowed corn field once, I came close. Winds aloft are so important. Lesson learned! 28 jumps so far. Thx

Body position help and 1/4 breaking or slightly rear risers breaking. Once i tracked the wrong way due to clouds. Kept readjusting the landing area, but made it eventually in the auxiliary exception landing zone. Never give up, but if have doubt keep planning, in case you won't make it.

I would like to add 1 more possibility and that's flying in 3/4 brake. With wind in your back you'll make it the furthest as the wind will be pushing you forward and the decent rate is at it's lowest. When going into the wind it's best to use the rear risers. As you'll flatten out your canopy reducing drag. Hope it will help my skydive companions. 🤙🏻 Spa Belgium I was 2km from dropzone open at 4500 ft. And made it back. It was a windy day about 16-18 knots

3 off landings. Least favorite was a briar patch. Most favorite was a baseball field. You forgot to add if you can’t make it back and the wind is against you. I had an almost off landing where I was being pushed off by facing the wind. Front risers helped and I got back.

I’ve seen it happen from the point in your first video. Someone busy doing housekeeping and get too far downwind and the wind is strong enough they can not penetrate it when they finally turn into it. If you have a little penetration go rears. No penetration, fronts. Best thing to do is relax, take a breath and look straight down. If you have zero forward movement, use fronts. If you have a little use rears.

Thanks Catherine. Great video and advice. I had a long spot recently and I didn't check I was in the holding area (dick). I dumped high (5,500) to do canopy drills but when I looked down I wasn't even on the airport (dick). I started heading back but had to create a new landing pattern with alternative landing site picked if I didn't make it back. Got past the last obstacle by 400ft and landed on the target (ha ha). Kept thinking about training priorities - flare - avoid obstacles - land straight - face into wind - land at DZ.

Was just about to make that comment. I’ve had several long trips back. Don’t leave your brakes stowed. Cleared those then fly on brakes, if wind is at your back. Don’t want to get too low, unstow brakes and realize you have problem and no altitude to fix it.

The Pull Higher is only a option when you exit last . Opening High being First or in the Middle is a Stupid Idea! And DONT let your Toggles Stowed , If u release them low and then have a nice malfunction u got a big PROBLEM!!!

in both my jumps I couldn't tell looking out of the plane where I was supposed to land I think becoming comfortable with the same place while you're learning and knowing how to look for the the drop zone. And by the way how would I get in sky vipers attire

I had a few off landings. My worst is when I had to walk back through a forest and lost my Ray-Bans. Lesson: Don't jump with your good glasses.

i would not recomend to open higher unless you are last one to jump off the plane. rather land out than take the risk of someone fall through your canopy

That is a good point. But if we think the 2 ways you coyld end up being in a long spot are if you are tracking or if you were one of the last jumping. But that is a good point to keep in mind that there might be other jumpers above.

This is tricky cause there is a lot of factors that comes into account depending of the canopy so the best thing is to test out to know what works best with your wingloading and canopy. It could be half break.

I have a question about landing (sorry it is not about land off). I'm super rookie jumper with A license. Last time someone told me that when I decide landing pattern(direction), I have to follow first jumper's pattern even if wind changes direction on my turn. Is it right? or I have to decide my pattern depending on wind direction on my turn? or it's just up to DZ rule?

Hey JT, It is really up to the DZ rules. We hope the first one lands correctly but if you feel it starts to be dangerous with people landing in weird ways, you can still follow the rule and land like the first one but consciously land away from the traffic if you have more room in your landing area. I prefer land alone and forget my target when things get messy. ;) My 2 cents.

My only comment is the jumper should have figured out their "plan B" well before 1000'. And made the decision to land off DZ. For me I know if I'm not making it back by 1500'. Then I head for one of my alternate landing spots.

Most awesome vid ever due to the often unrealized or overlooked critical information. Many, simply go with ground wind speeds and if your spotting students it's especially important to be the momma bear, not the yeah your good bro moron. Safety ignored or neglected results in loss of income for every DZ. That DZ is where you jump, if it gets suspended operations or cancelled it's your loss. I've had it happen at my first DZ and it went out of business.

Good points. Of course, we got to take the load in consideration and a little higher also mean at the set 3500 feet and not lower as sometimes it may happen. ;) And right about the toggles, we never know if a mal can happen doing so.
