Interesting build Mr Glen. An aproch to hammer making that is out of the norm I've learned. So here I go learning something different. See this is exactly why RU-vid University is more valuable than any classes one can take from one individual teacher training class in his way. Apple butter to peach jam!! Either way it's going to come out sweet, going from cold and raw, to hotter than all get out, back to cold a saaaawweeeeettt. 😁👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻. Good on you for having showed us another way to get her did and a functional work around to a blacksmith project. I know alot of you Creators don't see yourself as teachers per say....but to us younguns in the smithy world, well just watching folks teaches us new and inventive ways to ply the trade in an amalgimus way we can't get without y'all.. 🙏 Blessings my friend Crawford out ⚒️🧙‍♂️

Got a bit of an accent, but it's ok... he tells me I've got a funny accent. With me, you never know what you're going to see and the steps I take may not always be logical or what would be considered traditional. I make a lot up as I'm going along and so you need to keep this in mind when thinking of me as a teacher. But it's good to approach stuff with an open mind and so I appreciate your' support. I'll finish this hammer in my next video and I think it'll work well for me. Thanks.

A great looking hammer Glen. You make moving steel look effortless but I know better. Your hammer skills are superb. It is nice to see true blacksmithing without using power hammers, presses etc. You are an inspiration to everyone who watches your channel. I do appreciate the heavy equipment, power hammers and hydraulic presses, and those who master using them. It's just not for me but maybe if I had more exposure to using those tools and large enough work space, I'd be using them too. Thanks.

Make the top guillotine insert die about 1" wider than the bottom die, and you can lift it with your hot work piece, insert it, and not have to lay the hammer down to raise the top die manually. Works great.

I normally wouldn't have to lift the top die (after the first time) and could just rotate the piece. But since this piece barely fit, I needed to remove it first, then rotate. Your idea is very interesting and would eliminate lifting the top die by hand altogether. Thanks.

Hey Glen The problem with making a hold fast is you only consider that you need one when your in the middle of a project, so this is a little reminder for you, go make yourself a hold fast, you won't regret it👍

You're so very right. Since I started making videos and so varied the projects I work on, I'm always coming up against this problem. And since I'm pressed for time usually, I always try to make whatever I have on hand work but it doesn't always go well. I will take time and make a holdfast. Thanks.

I have no doubt that I'm likely doing this backwards from how folks traditionally go about it. But one way or the other, it'll make a useable hammer. Will finish this in my next video. Thanks.

It doesn't take elaborate tooling to make a hammer but the punches and drifts you use need to be made right. And you need to realize doing this by hand, even with the proper tooling, takes time and energy. But worth the effort... Thanks.

I’ve made many hammers. But I have the advantage of two powerhammers. I learned about making hammers by hand with a striker. I appreciate the effort. I have always used the tongs to serve as a stop to register any fullering. I see you used paint to line them out. Can you see the paint at forging heats? I am very intrigued by this since I am scheming a totally different style of hammer and typical technique will not work. I have lined up forged hammers for grinding facets or chamfered edges, but never to help line up fullers. Any help would be appreciated!

I have very limited experience using power hammers and hydraulic presses but do appreciate how they can significantly cut down forging time on projects like this. Some would say otherwise but making hammers by hand hammering is not easy; takes time and effort. The lines I mark with the paint pen I use are still visible even after heating the workpiece. But if you get much beyond an orange heat, towards yellow, the lines will appear fainter and fainter. Thanks for watching and sharing.

You're off to a good start. I noticed you used your left hand for drawing the line but hammered with your right. I can't even draw a squiggly line with my left hand. lol

I am seeing a bit of a precision sleeve for the mast of the magician to make the opening adjustable for larger projects.........

I've scratched my head many times thinking about how to make my guillotine more versatile while maintaining simplicity and strength. An adjustable top guide (sleeve) is a good idea but may be beyond my engineering skills. We'll see... Thanks.

Glen, here I had always thought you to be Superman. But I see I'm not the only one who gets tired doing this stuff. I really like your punch and drift for the eye. What kind of steel are they made out of? Do you sell these? Thanks for your detailed assistance in my Smithing Education. You are one of my best and favorite teachers.

On this day, the weather turned hot and especially humid and the humidity just saps the life out of me. My punches and drifts are either H13 or D2. I sell somewhat similar, handled versions of these for smaller work but am considering offering a hand held punch and drift set for stuff like this hammer. And if I do offer these, I will make a video to let those interested know. Thanks.
