Here's my MSQC affiliate link: glnk.io/mzmmj/sewthedistance Here's my blog for this one: www.sewthedistance.com/blog/just-one-layer-cake-crazy-quilt Just was made aware that my video sequencing at the end is out of order! Sorry about that! I did not trim the quilt before quilting it. I placed the voiceover and the video in the wrong place! Eek!
Congrats on your partnership with MSQC! If you ask me (and no one did lol) they are the lucky ones to have you. Your enthusiasm and excitement is something they are blessed to have. Please don’t loose your creativity and avidity for sewing and quilting; it is such a breath of fresh air. I would hate to see them put a bunch of parameters around in sending you items you have to work with or patterns you have to use. I hope we will still see your own creative patterns here in the channel. We all absolutely love watching you and now you’ll have the even broader audience that deserves you! ❤😊👍🏼
So sorry! I guess I spelled Weft wrong, too! I wish I could fix both, but the editing tool on RU-vid (post-publish) won't allow me even add text. Sigh. Oh well. Live and learn! And I must have watched that video 10 times before uploading it. Can't believe I missed that!
Oh, thank you so much, @ambermyers4256 ! You are so sweet! They are wonderful to work with! I get a budget and then I submit a proposal, so I get to keep my creative freedom, which I like! It is also a nice way to make a little money to help support my channel. So far it has been great! Thanks again for your kind words. It means a lot. 🥰
Such fun! If you want to go completely scrappy - and especially if accumulating pieces over time: put together a storage box with dividers based on the template pieces. When you have 20 or 30 or so of each, you're ready to start stitching.
I bought a quilt kit from the Quilted Twins in Dade City Florida. It's name is Crazy for Florida. Very much like this but has 8 or 9 pieces. And does anyone know if they carry templates for that many pieces? 06
Start to finish, I learned so many great tips throughout your video! I've been wanting to try this template but didn't know if the piecing would be too fussy. Can't wait to see what you decide for the label. Florarama is what it screams to me. Such a fun print set. Thank you!
I love your tutorials!! You explain everything so well and clearly! BTW, I just bought this ruler, after watching your tutorial, I cannot wait to try it!
I loved this video. The fabric is beautiful. The crazy templates look great fun. I took on board all your tips and tricks. I need all I can learn. haha. The first thing I thought of when you said you are putting the name of the quilt on it is Razzle Dazzle. Don't ask me but I would call a quilt like that Razzle Dazzle. Thanks for this video Kris.
Yes, I do. I would put the border on and then quilt it. I hope this helps. Just in case it was confusing, the ending sequence is out of order. It was an editing mistake on my part. ❤️
Thank you, Kris…another fabulous video 😊. Question for you….did you sew this on your Juki TL machine, if so….what table do you have it set into? I have been looking for a table for my 2010Q. Thanks!
My pleasure! So glad you love this! I have both my Janome and Juki in this video. I use the Janome for quilting and unfortunately, I don't have any information about that table. It came with my machine. I purchased the machine bundle at Blaine Quilting Center in Cranston, RI a few years ago. My guess is it is an Arrow product, but I can't find any information about it. My Juki table, however, is from Amazon. Here's a link: amzn.to/48Vxru5 It is a portable table and I love it! My husband made me a custom insert for it, but I believe you can buy them, too. It folds up and has wheels and everything! It is a great table. My friend has one, however, and doesn't like it because it is a bit low for her. I hope this helps! i wish I had more information for you!
I’m glad Missouri star thinks you’re as great as we do and you have teamed with them. What a great team. Thanks for everything you do. I think you should call it scrappiness as happiness.
Love the quilt Kris, but especially love watching you. Your tips and explanations are great and your enthusiasm is contagious. Thank you for sharing your love of quilting with us. Always an interesting time and also come away happy and sometimes a little wiser.
I love it when you say there are no quilt police and what works for me! I tend to want everything perfect which never works out to be. That fact makes me overwhelmed and depressed which is not what quilting is meant to be!
Yay! So glad this is a bit freeing for you! I completely understand as I am married so someone like this. My husband is a woodworker and is the exact same way. In fact, he helped me line up the backing for this quilt and when I said, "Close enough!," he was upset that I didn't take out the seam and try again. The upside to being like this is that I am sure your work is impeccable! There's something to be said about that, too! ❤️
If you've yet to name this quilt, Crazy Lazy Summertime or Crazy Summer Nights might be fun. What name did you finally call the quilt finally? Love this quilt, your videos and very much appreciated your quilting and sewing style. You are amazing.
These are great names! I actually haven't named it yet. I am still trying to decide! I am planning on making a bunch of labels this weekend, so I have to figure it out. Of course, I can also always change the label, right? Thank you for suggestions!
I love hearing that you partnered with Missouri Star Quilt Company. I have been following them for years. I also am looking forward to more of your videos.
This is the first time I’ve seen anyone trim the batting and backing off before quilting. I’m in awe. Love this quilt! I’d considered the templates in the past but now they are going on my Wish List!
I am so sorry about that! I placed it in the wrong order! I quilted before I trimmed. 😳 Whoops! So glad you love this one! ❤️ Thank you for watching and mentioning this!
I wish I could go in and "fix" it, but post-publishing editing is limited and I can't. My biggest concern is messing up new quilters! I hope that doesn't happen.
Oh no! Who's knocking on the door? It's the quilt police! Go away! Kris said I could make it my way. So there. Fun quilt Kris. Thank you! If border added, I like the dark flower fabric the best. Marion in Oregon.
That's crazy gorgeous! I actually prefer the version without sashing; it's just so exuberantly chaotic, but then I do like color chaos 😉. Thank you for sharing your whole process. A couple observations: First, the crosswise grain is called weft, not waft. And second, wavy borders will make life very difficult for your longarmer 😢, so unless you'll be tying your quilt, it really is best to take the necessary steps (touched on in this video) to get your quilt borders on so they will lay flat, quilt police or no.
Thanks so much! We agree! ❤️ Thanks so much for watching. I did make a few mistakes (waft typo and the quilting/trimming sequencing which was an editing error). It happens, right? Thank you so much for watching and your feedback. ❤️
Thank you so much for watching! I am not sure where you could get it in Australia. It is made by Creative Grids, if that helps. Hopefully someone here in the comments will know. Wish I could help more! ❤️
Thank you so much! 🥰 My husband and I made it. We used Jenny Doan's video for inspiration. Here's a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FuzW68YyN_s.htmlsi=fstLaPNc1QTO-SzH It is wonderful! I love that it is light and portable. I just need a bigger one. LOL!
I love your quilt. Wasn’t loving the polka dot binding suggestion on your design wall but that’s because I’m still learning how to put design together in my head. I was thinking that it looked too busy. Well can I tell you that seeing your finished product brought it all together for me. I need to learn to trust the process. How gorgeous it turned out with the polka dot binding. I absolutely love it. Thank you for sharing this project. I feel like I learned so much ❤
The blocks are from an AccuQuilt die and I just sashed them and put it together. I really need to do a video on that quilt. I get asked about it all the time! Glad you like it!
Kris you did a fantastic job with your teaching this quilt! You always do. Your happiness is always present. Thank you for bringing joy to my day. Blessings. See you on line again soon.
OH! I have that template...AND a super old old Layer Cake from a Tuesday Morning Store, that has been closed since 2018...and the L.Cake is from years before that as well! Excited to try out this pattern! Thanks!
Ohhhh, I miss Tuesday Morning Store! We used to live in New England and it was the best place to get precuts! Best kept secret! Thank you for this reminder! So glad you are going to make one! It is fun! You are so welcome. Thank you for watching and sharing! Great memories. ❤️
I love the no border look. I frequently just do the binding and am done with it. I hate using templates so won’t be trying this one but, nice video. I always learn something new when I watch your videos and I’ve been quilting for 24 years.
Oh, thank you so much! I understand about the templates. I have been using borders less and less. I am with you--the binding often is enough to frame it. So happy this video is helpful, too! Thank you for watching and for your kind words. 🥰
Thank you! This would make a great scrappy quilt, for sure! The wall hanging is made from an AccuQuilt die. Here's a link to it: www.accuquilt.com/go-owl.html Hope this helps!
Love the quilt. I've been doing so many fall color quilts so seeing the bright, cheerful colors of this quilt has made me decide I've got to get out of the darker colors for a while. Watching your enthusiasm and love of quilting makes me very happy. Thanks so much for sharing.
Oh, wow! My pleasure! I am so happy you love this and it has inspired you! I am drawn to darker colors, too, but I am trying to be more courageous with color. This quilt makes me so happy just by looking at it! Glad you like it, too! Thank you for your kind words! You are so sweet!
Hi! You are both right! I am so sorry about this. The video is out of order. I recorded the clips at different times as I was working through the making of this one and when I dropped them into the editing software, I put them out of sequence. Unfortunately, I can't fix it now that it's up. 🤦🏻♀️ Thank you so much for mentioning this and for your kind words. ❤️
You generate energy! My brain is /was having a moment of insanity. The method is a good change for me. I am glad to see forward thinking about making an adjustment to join the pieces differently than actual instructions. I was able to keep up with you the whole time. I was afraid I had misunderstood previous video’s about the trimming of the edges. I’m clear now, thanks. I enjoyed every minute of this class.
Kris, I have to ask. when trimming, why did you pick up the block and turn it around? Did you forget you had the rotating mat? LOL ----This is an old "stack and whack" quilt pattern. The original version has you make random cuts rather than using templates, so you would have a different size/shape pattern for each set that you cut. I bought this template set but have never used it. (Personally, I didn't want every block to be the same.)
LOL! So true! Great question! I do that to teach viewers how to do it when they don't have a rotating mat. But I can see how It could look like that! 😆 Thanks for the laugh! I should have mentioned that! ❤️ Yes! Although I haven't made a Stack and Whack quilt, I have made a Stack the Deck quilt, which uses the same method. My grandmother first showed me this method about 25 years ago, however. Everything old is new again, right? 😀 Thanks so much for watching and sharing! Love it!
Enjoyed your video so much. Your excitement for the quilt was contagious, I think I will make a scrappier one though. Did you get your backing from MSQC ? I loved that choice too.
Oh, thank you so much! I am thrilled that you enjoy my videos and excitement! I just love these fabrics. The backing fabric did come from MSQC. Isn’t it great? Thank you so much for watching! ❤️
This is the first time I've seen you and I just fell in love with your crazy quilt. A suggestion for the design name :- Manhattan Mayhem! It's what I'm gonna call mine, anyway. Can't wait to order the fabric, the template set and some sort of crazy, colourful and twisty type of border. I also can't wait to see your next video. Luv & Stuff from Oz. 🥰
YAY! Thank you so much for finding me! I love that you love this quilt and are going to make one. 🥰 OHHH! Great name! I love it! Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words. You made my day!
What is the folding notion you are using for binding in this tutorial? Can you provide a link to where I can get it? I had always wanted to buy the Crazy rulers, and do a quilt with this pattern; you've made it so easy, fun, and inspirational. I loved that you showed from beginning to end!! Because of your tips and tricks, I feel confident enough to buy it and start cutting/sewing.
Yay! So happy this is helpful! ❤️ The binding tool is called Binding Eaze. I have a video reviewing it. Here's a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6ciS7rBGU8E.htmlsi=Fx2zARoO0H_kb1kk Here's a link to the notion, too: quiltedheartz.com/product/the-binding-tool Hope this helps!
My blocks are not 8 1/2” no matter what I do. I know the pieces are cut right and I measured my seam allowance. I ended up squaring them to 8” and moving on with life….
It would be cute to make all the center stars you showed us in all the same fabric and maybe add sashing too. The border always adds so much to a quilt.
Beautiful, bright quilt. Sometimes if there is more than 1/2" variation in my top measurements, I'll take a seam up a little to even it up before I put the borders on. That way I don't get puckers on the longarm.
Wow! Look at you go! In fact, your process is very close to mine. I haven't used the spray but after watching this, I think I should give it a shot. I also pin and baste! The navy dots was an inspired choice for this quilt binding. Crazy quilts can be super busy to the eye and the navy dots sort of anchors and contains the crazy. Love it! Have you ever done feather stitching embroidery on the seams? I see this on vintage crazy quilts and I would like to try it on one of my old quilt tops. Thank you again, Kris, fir the inspiring video.
You are so welcome! So happy you love this! I am thrilled I am not the only one who does both. LOL! I know it seems crazy, but I like my quilts to be flat. Sounds like you do, too! 😀 I have used a feather stitch! So funny you mentioned that! I thought about using tha stitch on this one, but I thought it would get lost since the fabric is so busy. I may make another with less crazy fabric and do that and some embroidery. I really love this template set. Thanks so much for watching and sharing! 🥰
I never trim until I've done the quilting as it might still move and then you could be short at one edge. I do enjoy your enthusiasm. PS what is that gadget you used to press your binding.? It looks interesting.
I accidentally put the sequencing in the wrong order. The trimming clip should have gone after the quilting clip. If you look at the quilting clip, you can see that I hadn't trimmed yet. I am so sorry about the confusion. 🤦🏻♀️ Complete editing error. Thank you so much for watching! The binding tool is called Binding Eaze. It is great!
Loved this I have the templates and the tutorial showing how to use was helpful. I make borders the same as you do but I take a tip I got from Anita Grossman Soloman by ironing batting tape on the quilt edge this helps because both edges work together. I have even had longarmers praise me about the straightness of the edges.
Awesome. I love the navy border. Is t it amazing how many colors blend together regardless of colors. Glad you are with Missouri Star . you all are amazing and fun and just see without stress.
I was disappointed that you didn't mention how you quilted it. I could see that it was straight line quilting, but it would have been nice to know the amount of quilting and were they all straight lines.
Great question! The template plastic (or cutting mat, as the case my be) is too thin. I would have risked cutting the plastic and I needed the template for the other sets. I hope this helps and makes sense! Thanks so much for watching! i hope you enjoyed the video! ❤️
You are so welcome! Thank you so much! I liked the sashing too, and I also agree, but since I promised a One Layer Cake quilt video, I didn't want to do that and go back on my promise. I had a lot of discussions with friends if it is still a one layer cake quilt if you add sashing. I am still not sure, so I decided to error on the safe side. So glad you love this!
Gosh 5 minutes into the video I decided this was too much work for me. I love your creativity and your instruction style so I kept watching. I love the final result.
Awww, thank you so much! I love that you kept watching! It is some work, but it is almost magic how it comes together. I completely understand! Thank you so much for your kind words. 🥰
That is cute. And yes, the blue poke-a-dot binding is perfect. A lot of cute names for the quilt, but I guess I'm not that creative. I would simply have called it "My Crazy 8's quilt".
Thank you so much! I am thrilled that you love this! Oh, good idea! I don't have the crazy quilt templates for my AccuQuilt yet! I may have to get them! Thanks for the tip!
Thank you so much! 🥰 I quilted 1/2” from each seam and then one down the middle of each block both vertically and horizontally and then 1/2” on each side of those lines. Hope this helps!
Congratulations on becoming an MSQC affiliate! And thank you for sharing the discount link with us! When you have a minute, could you please explain when the discount can be used at MSQC? (i.e., Does it not work on sale items? Can we use it as often as we want or only once? etc.) Again, many thanks!
Thank you so much! Great questions! The discount changes monthly, and I post that month's "special" on my Facebook page. For example, this month (April 2024), the discount is 20% off purchases of $50 or more. Simply click on my link and then go shopping. I hope this helps.
Call it Playing Crazy with Chris or Kris ( oops lol) It's so funky! 💖 Props for hand basting the edges down. Q: when you hand stitch the binding down on the back what thread do you use? If sewing thread , double? Ty for sharing your adventures it was really enjoyable .🩷☘️🍁
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching and for your kind words! 🥰 Oh, I love that name! Perfect! Great questions! I use a single strand of cotton thread. I match the thread to the backing not to the binding. I find it blends in better. I know many people who double it, however. That would work, too. I hope this helps!
My second time viewing. I saved it this time why I didn’t before I thought I would remember it. 😢 Now I will have it when I am ready to start a new project. I just want to say thanks you. I love your videos. You did a great job start to finish showing each step not just to quilt top finish but actual quilt finish, how you laid the backing down ,batting next and the trimming edges and squaring up even your basting together. It was fantastic to watch. Have you ever tried gluing your binding instead of clips. When I bind I sew from back. Fold to front and glue down. I usually use a print backing so I can sew on the front as I can control how my stitching looks just a little finicky thing on my part. I also loved your simple quilting. I am going to try it on my machine.
Love your quilt. I have made a quilt with these templates but you did give me some great tips on the cutting. All in all my group of ladies that I quilt with loved my quilt and they all have ordered the templates. This was such a fun video to watch-thank you so much and I love how you get so excited.
Oh, wow! Yay! This is awesome! Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching my video! I love those templates. Can't wait to make some more things with them. 🥰
LOVE that quilt. I have that ruler - I have to use it now! Thanks for the info. I am with you on the navy blue with white polka dot binding - looks great! April
That came out really nice. I just got that layer cake in the mail and have been looking for the perfect pattern. I might have to give this a go. I absolutely adore this fabric line.
Thank you so much! YAY! I love when that happens! It is a fun quilt to make! If you have any questions as you start making it, please let me know. Happy to help!
I love how your quilt came out - I love the binding too, it was the perfect choice. Please can you give me the name of the owl quilt on the wall behind you and where can I purchase the pattern from? I love that one too. Many thanks and happy stitching. Xx sally
Thank you so much! I am glad you like this! The owl quilt isn't really a pattern. I used an AccuQuilt die to make it and just sashed the blocks. I get a lot of requests for a video on this, however, so I may have to make one. Here's a link to the die: www.accuquilt.com/go-owl.html Hope this helps!
GREAT JOB, Kris!!! I love your choice of fabric for the border. Now I have to go order those rulers from MS Quilt. Thank you for a fantastic tutorial! Have a wonderful rest of your week.
I made that from the owl die from AccuQuilt. I really need to make a video on it. Many people ask. I am not sure what the rules are around it, however, as it isn't my design. Hope to have some tips on it soon.
Love love love how your crazy quilt turned out! I especially love your cutting tips and the templates you made so you don’t have to measure each time! So smart! I’m not creative with names so I have no good suggestions… the front porch quilt came to mind but that’s so long! lol
Hi Kris - loved your tips for these templates. They are great fun. Your organizational tips are excellent and I love the idea of making templates from dollar store cutting mats - genius! I've made a couple of these and included a video on my channel on how to use yardage rather than precuts. And to look at the template shapes to pick a star or pinwheel design. The star video (called Puzzle Quilt) is up now, and the pinwheel is coming soon.
Thank you! Yes, it is a great product. It is called Binding Eaze. I have a video on how to use it. Here's a link, if you are interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6ciS7rBGU8E.htmlsi=Wo0alboVWx5T1zTI I hope this helps!
You are so welcome! Happy to help! ❤️ So happy you loved the quilting. I was going to follow the crazy quilt seams, but this just made a bit more sense since it is a busy quilt. I am glad you like it!
I had to look them up! Thank you so much! I learned this technique from my grandmother 30 years ago. Everything old is new again, right? Thank you so much for watching and sharing! I am sure your jacket is amazing! ❤️🥰❤️
