Today, we are testing out the wonderful Amethyst microphone from JZ Microphones!
This microphone is a premium class large diaphragm microphone that will give you that classic warm, vintage sound. Each Amethyst contains the unique Golden Drop Capsule technology. This makes the capsule’s diaphragm lighter, and therefore faster, to deliver more clarity, precisions, and to reduce coloration and distortion.
When I was doing research on this microphone, I found that it was often compared with a Neumann U67, which is perhaps one of the most famous rock microphones. If you can use this microphone as a more affordable version of a U67, that is an interesting claim to make!
As U67’s are most known for their use in rock recordings, I tested the Amethyst by doing a cover of Fire and Water by Free. I generally think of bluesy rock being recorded on a U67, so this seemed like the perfect song! I do not have the voice of Paul Rogers, of course, but I did like the way this sounded with my vocals and the other instruments we recorded. This mic really does add some sort of extra grit or pizazz, which I really enjoyed.

What would you use this mic for?

On Rock or Indie Rock vocals if the mix is busy. It lacks a little body for me to think of it as a "go to" for stripped or acoustic versions where I feel like needing the elements to sound bigger/thicker. The acoustic guitars per se sounded great, though.

I just started getting more comfortable with writing and performing my own blues tunes. I never wanted to feel like I was just "phoning it in", as they say. But I can absolutely hear the tone that would make this a killer blues mic. It just has a super sweet tone overall. I'm currently writing more blues. I wouldn't mind doing some vocals through this. Also... micing up the Breedlove for some sweet tones would be pretty awesome as well. That being said... I would like an autographed Warren Huart album. Warren sings your favorite hits, spanning the decades. Let me know where to send the money for this.

I would use it on a vocal, acoustic guitar, piano, percussion, wind instruments, as drum room mike and if I had 2 I would use them as overheads :)

Wow, I think this isn't just a microphone, but a time capsule. I can hear vintage tones breathing thru the speakers. I loved that performance Warren. I turned off my video monitor for a moment to let my ears grab a little more.

At the $500-ish price range the Shure KSM32 is a stellar option, and the WA87 is another incredible sounding mic for the price (not too close to the U87 Ai, but still incredible).

Podcastage yes, indeed, I’ve used KSM32’s, they made insanely good room mics instead of U87’s! Did a shoot out with the Warm against 12 other mics at Blackbird. The KSM is definitely a wonderful mic!

I bought one of these a few months ago and only tried finger picking on acoustic (besides vocals) but for that didn't quite work out. I'm very pleased to see it used on a lot of sources working out so well :)

After watching a video before this one in which you were using the SMB7, I can definitely tell the difference. That grit you’re talking about is there. It’s got kind of a punch to it. I can hear how it would be a great rock mic.

OH YEAAAAAAAHH!! That was such a great frikkin performance! Head banged all the way :D Again, that electric guitar tone was killer and right on the money. Also, I dont know why you say you aren't a good singer, Warren...you have a great voice and it suits rock music very much because you naturally have some dirt and grit in your voice which makes you sound amazing! :D Also, side note - great mic! :P

Hi Warren, I'm really digging' that "crunch" the Amethyst is adding to your vocals (and everything else recorded thru it.) Imparts a really finished sound...like a record. Note: "Crunch" is the word I've chosen to try to describe that extra "grit."

Joe Barresi has said time and time again that the Violet Amethyst Vintage mics are his favorite overhead mics. I'm not sure if these are exactly the same but judging from this video this mic is quite something else.

I've used the Amethyst for recording in a live situation in the studio, similar to how I'd use a SM7 but a bit more hi-fi with the same rejection qualities. I have Neumann and Manley mics for my main vocals but this mic is a great one to have when you need more than 1 and besides being smaller, the shock mount is way smaller with is better for storage and micing tight spaces.

Just a heads up for anyone considering buying it, it doesn't come with the shock mount, it's sold separately. The Violet brand shock mount is essentially the same--look in to the history of JZ and Violet as they're connected. I got the Violet brand (found a used one on Amazon), because even though I bought from JZ's website, my mic came in a Violet brand box. Blue Microphones is a company that broke off from Violet/JZ pretty much, and they have a similar shock mount that might work with the Amethyst, but I'm not sure.

First of all Warren, I really was pleasantly surprised by what your voice brought to that song. A different perspective. No one is Paul Rogers and the fact that you didn't try to be was cool. It totally worked. Great production all the way around. As for the mic, Well it must be pretty good.

Very focused upper mid bite/grit/distortion(?). I would put this on an arco string instrument with a lower register; cello, double bass. I would actually like to hear on a guitar cab with a Coles 4038: let the Coles carry the low mids, Amethyst the upper mid focus.
