Have you ever hired any African American staff? AA candidates are over qualified for positions, more qualified than their competition, but often are overlooked due to systematic racism and preexisting stereotypes.
First, I really appreciate your videos. I had an issue with one of your points about demonstrating that you can solve the customer’s problem though. You began your video by framing it as what you can do to get a first interview. But I have rarely seen a job listing that revealed what their pain points are other than needing to fill the position. I think that you don’t know what their problem is until you already have the interview and have asked the question. How do you get yourself to that first interview other than demonstrating authority in your field? Perhaps this is for a different video.
Hi Erin. I love your point. Usually, the reason companies hire for a role tends to be on a general note, similar to other companies hiring for the same role. So one idea is to either talk to people in the company you are interviewing for, or other companies in the same industry, and probe for the pain point. I do agree though that you can dive deeper during the interview itself. Thank you for taking the time to write such a considerate comment.
I really love your content, it's amazing... However, I have these problem. It's difficult for me to get this online jobs, due to my country (Nigeria). Pls any recommendations.
So basically you're saying that anyone that is trying to break out and start a new job path is screwed because they wouldn't have any authority for the job they are applying to even at an entry-level position and that they would waste the employers time by even attempting to apply to said job. Even if they actually took the time to prepare a professional resume and write a letter of intent and cover letter??? No wonder people can't get hired even with a Master's degree nowadays. Deplorable.
In my view, if someone recognizes that they are a beginner in their field or that they don't have any experience at all because they are starting a new path they have the power to find solutions to this challenge. For example they can learn about the new area they are going into, get certifications, work as an apprentice, do a first job at a lower rate to go through the learning curve and many more. Anyone can build their authority in a field over time and yes that takes more effort that trying to get a job in few field they already have experience. The point of the examples I have given above is to allow you to put things in your resume, letter of intent and cover letter that convince the person hiring that you will do a good job, ideally better than some of the other candidates competing with you. I hope this helps. Also, any field has beginner jobs which do not require experience or if they do you might be able to compensate for the lack of it through your other skills. Simply applying to jobs without explaining transferable skills or without proving that you can do the job well in the CV will likely be difficult unfortunately. I wish it would be otherwise.
Yeah I heard crickets alright! What if you’re so nervous and given yourself the pep talk that you can do the job but not the interview. The interviewer even pointed out how nervous I was. Ughhh Sweats! 😓😡🙄💣 #DidntGetTheJob
