The Hammond B3 and Leslie 122 were made for each other and continue to be a legendary pair over 60 years since their first meeting. In this video, I demonstrate the latest Hammond SKx Pro dual manual organ and the new Leslie 122H Heritage.
The SKx Pro has all the sound of a vintage B3 in a smaller, lightweight package as well as acoustic and electric pianos, strings, clavs, pads, and more. It's a fantastic update to the SK2 and SKx models.
The Leslie 122H Heritage is an reimagining of the classic 122 model with no expense spared. Featuring a beautiful wood cabinet (no particle board or MDF), a real wood lower rotor, a newly designed upper driver that faithfully recreates the sought after V21 sound, a revamped real tube amplifier based on the vintage 122 amp but improved with modern features, silent speed switching, super quiet DC motors, and more.

I have the Legend JDF with the 25 note pedalboard bench and organ stand. Also got twin Hurricane cabinets and it absolutely awesome ! I personally can't fault it. It's as basic as possible as we live in the remote Scottish Highlands so no repair shops without going a very long way ! This latest version obviously takes it to another level 😀 l love Viscount . For the money they're fantastic !

Jim, great as always. I have the SKX Pro since November as well. I use the Vent 2, because a real Leslie is too big for me.

Great performance Jim! Most B3-clones sound nice today but nothing can beat the old electro-magnetic originals in my opinion. Not today and not tomorrow. For example: if you play heavy block chords a´ la Wild Bill Davis with 888888888 on upper you still can hear AND feel the differences.

I've heard this combo live when Cory Henry played in Minneapolis last year in March. I was satisfied with the sound quality, knowing that the virtual multi-contact system was working :D

me too. it was a great show. He used a SKX pro + Leslie 145 + with a custom amp in it that took the 11pin output. There was some custom magic involved in the portable sound he was able to bring to that stage. Would love to know who built that rig and how. Sounded amazing and his band was all in a smallish rig I believe

As far as I've seen, the Leslie 122H has the original '60s lumber-core cabinet and a special amplifier with two different preamp sections (the "122" preamp being loosely based on the AO-28 preamp with a 12BH7 tube, and the "147" channel featuring a solid-state preamp). The amp design is definitely quite nifty. Has Hammond Suzuki also improved the loudspeakers in comparison to the 122XB? I guess that the motors, the motor control unit and the crossover are identical. The frequency response of the 122XB's upper driver always seemed off to me and the woofer didn't have the low-mids of those old AlNiCo woofers either.

Sadly most people can't understand those things which is in fact the black art of vintage audio and hifi industry, now we live in this horrible plastic digital dark age with its cheap consumables that are built not to last and while working they never sound right either, because as everything else the nature of technology has changed as well, that's why they can't go to moon again, many chemicals were banned and cobalt became very expensive commodity thus no more high quality alnico magnets in speakers, instead now they use ceramic or neodymium magnets. So for the real thing the vintage analogue audio is still the king! Imho.. Peace.✌

Not sure if that's a dig on me, but in my experience the people that show up with the MOST gear usually can't play. :) You know, the drummer with the 24 piece kit that takes 2 hours to set up.

@@JimAlfredson In my experience everybody wants a zero hassle drummer who plays great with all the instrument cabinets out in front of him facing away and a floor monitor beamed at his head with nothing but vocals in it. And he doesn't come with any gear of his own at all because he's been told he will be required to play somebody else's gear for somebody else's convenience.

Only ONE set of drawbars! No thanks! And a Leslie not powerful enough to not need miking in a small studio? I am better off with my XKS two manual, with two sets of drawbars and my ultra hot-rodded old 900!
@JimAlfredson
@JimAlfredson Год назад
How else are you going to hear the Leslie in a video if it's not miked?!?

What a comment!! How about a video with you demo-ing your superlative XKS two manual, with two sets of drawbars and ultra hot-rodded old 900. I'd love to be able to make a comparison.
@jordanburrill883

I understand that miking a Leslie is usually needed for recording (in a 'dead' recording studio), because four channel stereo never took-off. And it's hard to get the real sound of a Leslie with just two channels. But, in a studio or live setting, miking a Leslie loses all the multi-dimensional experience of that very special 'instrument'. And close miking (even with a stereo sound system), still looses the unique dimensional sound. Leslies shine in a live setting (if they can produce enough volume to keep-up with other instruments), where the sound can swirl around the band and the entire venue. The person running the soundboard, can still balance the overall volumes and mix. Some time ago, I just decided to not compromise anymore, by miking. It took some time and work to get what I needed. The old 900 I got (really cheap because most of the 'CBS' era instruments were real dogs!). But, they still had wood rotors and I had to make a new one, where the sound was not as restricted. For more output, I built a box-shaped MDF baffle over the bass rotor opening, to mount two 15" bass drivers in the baffle openings - at 4 ohms, that's over 500 watts rms to the bass section. The treble channel was driven by the second channel of the stereo amp - with an active crossover (still divided at about 800 Hz). I had two modify the horn section, lowering ithe mounting board and making an adapter to run two High-powered, midrange, compression drivers, with a 2" ID PVC 'Y' plumbing pipe fitting. This comment is getting way too long - sorry! The two manual SKX runs into a overdrive pedal, which then drives a tube-powered preamp, before driving the stereo power amp, at up to 500+ watts per channel. I can (could have), placed the Leslie behind other band mates' amps, for best effect. Video and pics are a problem, because I'm semi-retired and packing up, for a move from CT to Florida. And I'm being slowed-down by an illness requiring radiation treatment. But, I'll supply a couple of pics, but nothing is powered or wired up. I have (obviously), not tried that new Hammond SKX "Pro". But, I only see one set of drawbars. Which (I guess means relying on presets!). Dealing with digital sould and controls with just one set of drawbars per manual is already a frustration enough! Enlighten me, if I am wrong! I'll try to get some pics here, later. Sounds like I'm seen as a crank, which is ok. So, enlighten me as to why another underpowered (by my expectations), Leslie and another digital Hammond are such a big deal? 🙏 frustrating enough.

I have to apologize for my view of the XK pro! After doing some actual research, I see that the two manual SKX Pro does have two sets of drawbars. But, still HATE the tiny, little screens! One thing Hammond and other another manufacturers could do, is to add a SVGA socket for a larger, external monitor, with a fold-out holder for it. For me, this would be a very helpful addition for a needed(?), monitor!
