My Tascam 388 Tape Sample Pack:
tinyurl.com/yc...
If you're trying to figure out how to craft neo soul, hip hop, analog sounding drum samples that have been recorded onto tape, but you do not have a tape machine or any outboard gear, I'm going to show you how! You do not necessarily need to buy any extra gear. All you need is two mics and two drums! But if you DO have a tape recorder, I'll also show you how.
Download all the sounds from this video here:
tinyurl.com/57...
First I'll walk you through how I tuned my drums. Then I'm going to record a beat to reel to reel, then to the cassette, and then I'm going to walk you through all of my settings and how I recreated that warm analog tape vibe in the box (complete with the actual analog hiss).

SM7B on the kick drum. 58 on the snare. Tuned the snare crazy high. Messed around changing the beater and tuning the kick head. Only one head on the beater side, and a lot of weight on the pillow. A little bit of eq going into the 388 and the cassette recorder. And on the DAW side it was a lot of messing around!
PS I know the api compressor is not free, but I could have just used any free compressor. It doesn't matter that much.

10:20 I think this is what really puts a stone on the debate analogVSdigital, analog happen then digital try to emulate, that's why experienced engineers can do a easy job all in the box cos they already have the analog reference and know what things should sound like, while if one is just starting, you need the real thing, to create your own references.
@travisraab
@travisraab 2 года назад
Yeah but at least for me I'm being generous to say it sounds 'ok'. To me, the real thing sounds real and the fake doesn't sound that good. But I'm sure a more talented engineer can do a bette job. Or maybe in a few years we will have a plugin that sounds good.

Another awesome video brother! I think I prefer the sound of the sm7b on kick between the two. Have you tried the sm57 on the snare? The classic snare sound. Great job getting that tape sound in the box. It really wasn't bad. Definitely more of a modern sound with that tape flavor. Might roll of some of the high end to get closer to the tape, but it's still a good sound. Of course I like the actual tape, but I just love that sound. You definitely have a lot of great colors to choose from and play around with.

I Like the 388 the best. For the DAW version, I think if you miced the bottom of the snare you wouldn't have needed to lean into the giant HF boost on the EQ, and it probably could have sounded just as good as the 388 (though the 388 version probably also would've sounded better).

So I’ve recently started recording live drums. I have a dirt cheap Starcaster set with a Pacific snare. I’ve had to dampen the hell out of this kit. Is that the difference between a cheap kit and an expensive one? There is so much buzzing, ringing and odd tones coming from the kick. I hit the snare and the toms rattle and ring! Are acoustic drums just not designed to be mic’d?
@travisraab
@travisraab 2 года назад
You can try changing the heads or taking a close look at the hardware or buzzing
@rocknreplay
@rocknreplay 2 года назад
@@travisraab I have new heads on everything except the kick. I stuck some folded up tissue to the bottom of the toms and that made the ringing stop. The buzzing came from the snare. Just seems like drums are inherently noisy.

The interesting thing that you say about the sound comparsion - in box (DAW) vs. analog (388) - is that the analog path is THE reference. Digital strives for mimicing analog but as you say you managed to do it very well! The 424 brings more hiss to the over all sound, maybe too much for some ears but I think it also adds more 'live' feeling to it; it's a matter of taste I guess. Thank you for another great video! Btw, does the cat and dog go along well? No bullying?
