My grandmother survived but never recovered from the Depression. She raised me, and we were a bit north of you in Quebec, Canada. I remember clearly that late July and all of August, well into September were the store - up months. We canned, crocked, pickled, smoked, salted and on and on. We traded with our neighbors, got a half a pig and a quarter of a steer which we broke down ourselves, and in turn the neighbors depended on Granny's truck garden. I don't think I can remember Granny buying anything smaller than a 20 kg bag of flour or sugar. We put up a lot of jams and jellies, and rarely bought anything we couldn't grow ourselves. I miss that lifestyle and I miss her. Still, I have carried those skills to today and know I find it interesting that there are even some that I work with who think I am "talented" to be able to do these things.

Question of the Day: Do you prepare? Yes. We prepare for the future. We stock our storeroom, try to save money, are frugal with our resources. We ascribe to Biblical principles, and also give. As everyone goes through their pantry and begins the big stock-up of '23, please remember, if you can afford it, find some extra for the less fortunate. Some canned food, staples, and even a few bags of candy (because everyone has a sweet tooth). Please visit the aged, ill, infirm, widows/widowers and orphans, and nursing home residents. We all need love as well as food. If you can, say a word to encourage those who's spirits are flagging, grieving, or perhaps suffering another kind of loss. God Bless, and praying the Lord meets your needs, and please remember to bless others as He blesses you ✝

I used to stockpile all the time but now that we are empty nesters and also because of the specialized diet my husband has to eat, almost everything we eat is very seldom on sale. I do keep at least one extra of household supplies like detergent, trash bags, cleaners, etc. I used to listen to a large variety of frugal RU-vid channels as podcasts, but got tired of being told “you must do this or you must do that in order to be considered frugal.” I have ups and downs with frugality. I struggle with it and I know it lol. I keep listening to your channel because you are encouraging, you are positive, and you also are honest when you don’t do as well with your frugality and that is what makes you so relatable. I’m not the most frugal person in the world, nor am I striving to win that title. I listen to find new ways that I might can implement to help my journey. Thank you! ❤❤

that skillet meal looked so yummy and easy to make. I live in Hawaii. We don't have harsh winters, but we do have hurricane season from June 1-November 30. We start stocking up on gallons of water, toilet paper, ramen, canned goods, batteries, baby wipes, garbage bags, mosquito coils, paper goods, toiletries, medicines, dog food, and we restock our first aid kit. We usually start stocking up after the new year. When we see things on sale, we buy a little, and we continue to do that right up until June 1. We pack a Rubbermaid tub with dry clothes, food, water, soap, a small first aid kit, can opener, lots of gallon size ziplock bags for important documents., and our weather radio.

A large size funnel can be made by cutting off the top of a quart or half-gallon sized milk, vinegar, or similar plastic container below the handle and turning it upside down. I use one of these to transfer homemade laundry detergent from a 5-gallon bucket into a reused 1/2 gallon laundry detergent bottle. Also good for dirty motor oil, etc. as it can be disposable. I love clearance sales. I shop a thrift store too. I found a case, 8 cans each diced tomatoes all natural for 2.00 a case. I already have a good supply of canned vegetables but i bought 5 cases. That is 25 cents a can. I could not pass that deal up. Every saturday when dollar general has the 5 off 25 and i have digital coupons i will stock up on toiletries and cleaning supplies or laundry detergent. A fewyears ago an employee saw i had 8 packages of angel soft toilet paper in my cart because they were buyone get one free, pre quarantine of course, and he said to me do you have an army at home? I said to him nope. Just frugal and i refuse topay full price for something i am literally going to flush down the toilet. Mom taught me to shop like that and i am so grateful. It has helpedme build a pantry and we can help others in an emergency. This save me from panic buying, and curbs hyperinflation. I am in North Florida so no winter prep to speak of. But i do make more soups, stews, casseroles and roasted meats in the winter time. While we do get cold here is is not like the north. We do stock for hurricane season. We have canned meats, crackers, canned souos and other readily accessible foods for that, including canned fruits. A propane grill and a generator. After hurricane Michael we were without power for ten days. My nextpurchase willbe a solar generator as hubby has sleep apnea and needs a backup for that. We use the generator for the fridge and freezer, coffee pot in the morning and hot plate for quick things like eggs, grilled cheese or heating up canned vegetables. Theother frugal ormoney saving i do is buy underwear and socksnear back to school or holiday time when manufacturers put out packs witha few extra pairs in per package. Thank you for the motivation and inspiration. Best wishes and love to you all.

I found myself nodding as you spoke at the end because we are all on our own journey. I live in South FL so I don't prepare for winter but prepare for hurricane season which means cooking what's in the freezer in case I lose power. I stock up on tuna and other canned goods. Tonight I made a pot of chicken noodle soup with vegetables for my boss and his family since I learned today that they have covid. I'm bringing over a nice portion with bread and some parmesan cheese (as I like to top it). Your channel is such a blessing and I'm so glad to have found you (I think through Kate Kaden). I recently saw an idea where someone did an emergency prep for one week worth of breakfast, lunch and dinner for their entire family. They put it all a bin. They only purchased non-perishable items that they knew their family would enjoy. For some reason, that method of organizing really clicked with me. I now have 3 bins for three weeks worth of breakfast, lunch and dinners for my family of 4. I shopped little by little and have started on week four for my emergency prep. A better way to mark your jars is to use a permanent marker, and then when you need to remove it, all you have to do is wipe it with some rubbing alcohol and the marker will come right off! You can also do the same thing with a white paint pen. In fact, I found that the white paint pen that I have actually comes off more easily than the Sharpie (less elbow grease required, as occasional the shape requires a little bit of a buffing). But I don't use dry erase pens anymore because the words can accidentally get rubbed off too easily, even with just transferring the jar from storage to the counter for use. And if you don't notice and fix it right away, you can end up with no idea what it said to begin with. Just be sure to only use the permanent marker and the paint pen on actual glass if you want it to come off completely. You can use this technique on plastic and metal, too, but I find that it won't necessarily always remove entirely. Sometimes you'll still be able to see the outline of the original words. And depending on how long the permanent marker stayed on the plastic/metal, you might not be able to remove it very well at all. But I've never had a problem wiping it off of actual glass, no matter how long it's been there.

So I have been baking my own bread & pizza as well. The secret I have found is cold fermenting your dough before you bake it. 😍 I make my dough, reserving the final cup of flour in the recipe for kneeding the dough, to prevent it from getting tough, then I let my dough rise and place it in the refrigerator for 5 days, pull it out, let it rise a second time after you have shaped it and then bake it 🤯 cold fermenting your dough is 100% the best thing you could possibly do if you make your own bread products 🤗

when I buy toilet paper, I look at the sq ft amount because some toilet papers seem to be a great deal, but may have less sq ft. At my grocery store, we have a pick 4 for $19.99 in the meat section. It consist of chicken tenders, breast, wings, ground beef, hamburger patties, pork chops, beef tips, tenderized steak and a few other things. I see people just grabbing 4 meat items without looking at the weight. The weight does vary, sometimes significantly. I always pick the packages that weigh the most. Thanks for all of the tips and encouragement! Your garden is coming along beautifully!

Yes, we all need to be wise and stock up for any disruption. I loved the short of Dixie sleeping so sweetly, we lost our little Coffee girl last Sunday, she became ill suddenly, the day before and passed away on the way to the vet Sunday...So. Hard. I still have images of pulling up and the very young vet on call coming out with her stethescope... Coffee-Belle was black too...We miss her but was blessed by seeing your Dixie there. You have a lot of comments I see, you both must be so busy trying to keep up with everything. I'm hanging in there, just busy with life. Thanking God for His blessings and I found a white feather on the Galveston Strand yesterday...A sign. I also found a white feather in our home when our little Peanut passed away a few years ago...Beautiful owls also came down to visit with me both times too...God works in mysterious ways. One of the owls was huge and white. Extrememly unusual for around here. God is faithful, ~Amelia

Canned 8 quarts of fresh green beans this weekend. Cooked up 2 quarts fresh green beans with frozen left over ham, vidalia onion, and pepper to eat with meals. Bought 2 gallons of vinegar for 99 cents by signing up our email address with a store. We buy our milk at Menards because it is $1.00 cheaper and longer expiration dates. We are eating fresh produce and melons given to us by friends and family. Using our a/c only about 8 hours to hold electric bill down. Eating 1 main meal for lunch and a small meal at dinner. We are continuing to restock our extra pantry and rotate our working pantry. We always stock up on needed sale items too. When we are prepared there is no need to fear. Really enjoyed this video. We have a extra/little frig we are using in the meantime so really have to be careful how much we have until next Sat-8/12. We are seriously reassessing what we really use and need and will only replace these items in our frig and freezer New frig new diet! P.S. When my 3 boys were growing up in the late 90’s/2000’s, I often bought milk at Speedway gas. 2/$6!!! Cheaper than gas at the time!!!🤣🤣🤣 Hello from Myrtle Beach!😊🏝️

We did have friends offer to bring us groceries, etc., but we told them it wasn’t necessary! We are 50 mile round trip to town. To be honest, we did have to throw a few things out produce wise. We just couldn’t eat much. Praise God we are feeling great again and went grocery shopping yesterday and replenished our emergency food! Thanks for the inspiration!

We are not used to the weather up here yet. But I think getting the needed foods that you can find on sale right now is a good start. I'm trying to get my family to eat more meatless, so we're stocking up on beans, legumes and grains. This is also the time of year we start thinking about what we are going to be doing for the holidays. One year I made soups in a jar mix, so we had to prepare by buying up different things over several months. I think this year I want to try to make a special recipe called "Cherry winks" for my kids. My mom got the recipe from her MIL many years ago and it was my dad's fave cookie. I think it has some ingredients we wouldn't use often, so I will look at options and be socking away a little here and there so I can buy those things that will make the upcoming holidays a little extra special.

I also grab anything soup/meals in cans on sale in case we're snowed in and we cook it on the wood stove. Being in ski country on top of a very tall "hill" we do get a fair amount of snow and theres been times you can't get off your mountain to go to the store so it pays to always be prepared! We also have several cans of gas for clearing out the snow not just for us but our neighbors who may need it. In NY winter is always coming at least thats how it feels to us ny'ers 😂😂😂. I'm starting to plan for winter now. I was able to forage for some Japanese raspberries (wineberries) and made some jam that I canned and a neighbor blessed us with some apricots and peaches and I made jame from those to can and have. I'm also stocking up on baking ingredients where I am getting low and replenishing some canned foods, etc. It's never too soon to get ready. If you can afford to do it, that's the best time. We never know when we'll be out of work or have an emergency that uses our 'extra' money and we won't be able to or we'll need what we've stocked up. I always try to get a little extra when it's a good price and I can afford it. Doesn't matter what season. Thanks for the reminders and the encouragement. Your garden looks great. I check wool and warm clothes and blankets. I move warm socks to the front of the sock drawer and light weight socks to the bank of the drawer. I also move long johns up to the underwear drawer and move light weight ones down to an out of season drawer. I check to make sure tires have enough tread and the right air pressure. Then I buy a bottle of blue window wash and add a bottle of isopropyl alcohol to it... and fill the window washer containers in the car with it. I also make sure my coat and jacket, neck scarf and gloves are all in good repair, good shape and repair them If necessary. I check to make sure I can still get into my winter boots. Because of lymphedema, I might have to go buy a bigger pair. I have the furnace checked and check the house for any new air leaks. That's about it. That recipe looked absolutely delicious!!! I started last weekend with making juice of 8 kg of black currents (5,5 litres), also I made 8 jars of jelly of them, one white cabbage in my garden was canned to a sweet and sour salade (7 jars). I do water canning since 30 years and we eat all of our food until it is empty. After water canning it lasts for ever. I also bake cakes in a jar, it is so nice to have a little cake in a jar on hand. Our garden is so full of veggies and fruits, it will be a lot work, but I love this work and so we get lots of food for our pantry for the next months and years.
