Today we're talking about how to properly "lay-up" (store) steam locomotive air compressors between runs or seasons.
Our example compressor is one of two recently acquired by the ‪@KentuckySteam‬, from the Pueblo Railway Museum.
It should be mentioned that on operating locomotives it is good practice to use steam cylinder oil mixed 50/50 with journal oil (aka 30wt oil). These compressors will have steam cylinder oil blown through them after they're mounted on the locomotive in several years.

Stuff reminds me of Petro-Glide 100 oil that we deliver to saw mills.

Thanks for the upload. We have two compound compressors on the locomotive we are restoring here in Houston,TX Southern Pacific 982 with Texas Railway Preservation Association. We had just went through the two compressors last week during our work session. Same things your doing is what we just did. But hopefully we can get a shop to completely tear down the locomotive get everything done.

Interlube Corporation's products are actually better, and cost slightly less. I've done and been responsible for several side by side comparisons. The result was that the Interlube Corporation's "Journal Guard 1200 and 2400" resulted in lower axle bearing temps than PB&J 220 and 460 respectively. Temps were cataloged for several weeks, same train, same ambient temps, about 23 degree lower bearing temps.

@@thatsteamguy1082 Good to know! Last I knew PB&J was the gold standard in our area. I think 3-4 years ago it was $2300 or there about a barrel

Yeah, I had long believed that too until I did some impromptu side by side testing

Jason...excellent video, but would be much better without that nasty green bar running down the middle of it...I'm just sayin'.
