So has work on 2716 been stopped completely for all the other side projects at Ravenna? I really dont see much point in throwing funds at the Kentucky Steam Heritage Corp since you folks arent even transparent on whats going on with the restoration. The last actual update was in what 2021? True you did just boast about getting all that steam era equipment donated from Montana; but there still wasnt any update on the locomotive itself. Meanwhile the NC&StL 576 group which moved and started their restoration work around the same time as you have made MUCH more progress and have been very open about everything. To cut to chase - more than a folks (myself included) wont donate a dime, or will stop donating if the organization in question isnt honest about the situation; or appears to just be playing around. We all have limited funds, and we want to see that whatever group is asking for a donation is actually worth receiving it.
Great samples of the Franklin C-2-L booster on the C&O 2716 in use can be found here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0xLUxb63VYE.html The C&O chose to pipe booster exhaust up to an integral casting ahead of the main stack, which makes their use evident. On the K-4 type 2-8-4, of which 2716 is one of, the booster added 14,000 lbs of tractive effort to the already generous 69,350 lbs from the main engine, and could be used up to a speed of 15 mph. Even with its use on the excursions recorded in the linked video, the engine struggles at certain points with its relatively short 12-car passenger train, suggesting that the grades in that territory were quite severe, probably over 2.5% in some areas. The difficulty of that territory becomes even more evident when one remembers that the K-4s used to handle 140 car, 11,500 ton loaded coal drags unassisted on the Kanawha subdivision between Russell, Kentucky and Handley, West Virginia with the exception of the 0.3% grade of Scary Hill west of St. Albans, WV where a pusher was furnished.
Interlube Corporation's products are actually better, and cost slightly less. I've done and been responsible for several side by side comparisons. The result was that the Interlube Corporation's "Journal Guard 1200 and 2400" resulted in lower axle bearing temps than PB&J 220 and 460 respectively. Temps were cataloged for several weeks, same train, same ambient temps, about 23 degree lower bearing temps.
Thanks for the upload. We have two compound compressors on the locomotive we are restoring here in Houston,TX Southern Pacific 982 with Texas Railway Preservation Association. We had just went through the two compressors last week during our work session. Same things your doing is what we just did. But hopefully we can get a shop to completely tear down the locomotive get everything done.
Hi, are these cars not owned by the circus now. I know it closed in 2017. What happened to all of the cars. The one in your video is it private owned now.
Now, if CSX would just do like the like the UP, and get 1604 out of the museum, and rebuild it for mainline excursions! Congrats on this one guys, it looks great, even in WM markings! What's that squeaking noise those?
Honestly, 1601 up in Michigan would probably be better to restore. It's been inside protected from the elements for the last 60 years and the B&O Museum already gave up one big C&O steamer with WM purchasing 1309. But,1604 is definitely available if they went that route.
@@hawkeyeten2450 Would it be the best for the WM though? will it pull bigger trains without a helper? Will they get the money out of it? They're reason why 1309 was picked over some other engines.
