Stoked. This is a type of paladin I've wanted for awhile. The Paladin of Vengeance is basically just playing the punisher. Which is dope, but this kind of Paladin is going to make a great addition to the game. Lots of Warhammer vibes.
If you look up Unearthed Arcana on D&D's website you can find Oath of Conquest Paladin already for play Original media.wizards.com/2016/dnd/downloads/UAPaladin_SO_20161219_1.pdf Revised media.wizards.com/2017/dnd/downloads/June5UA_RevisedClassOptv1.pdf Revised it was they're referring to in the video, and frankly the better edition of it lol
Dungeon Dad I’m playing one right now who truly wants to become God Emperor of mankind. He’s truly good, but any who would prey on society and war on each other will be punished, swiftly.
Oath of Conquest reminds me Superman in the Injustice comics. He no longer believes in humanities abilities to keep themselves safe and pure, so he bends them to his will through subjugation.
Mongol General: This is good, but what is best in life? Mongol: The open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair. Mongol General: Wrong! Conan! What is best in life? Conan: To crush your enemies. See them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their women. Mongol General: That is good! That is good. Maybe not the most accurate depiction but it's what I imagine every time I hear the name Oath of Conquest.
Good aligned Oath of Conquest: Darth Revan. The Old Republic is too weak too survive the upcoming struggle, I must embrase the dark side and conquer it to make it stronger.
I really enjoy the idea of internal strife within the order. It makes an automatic hook to introducing the subclass into a campaign as well as just being an interesting draw. Very nice.
Oath of Conquest "I feel no responsibility to comrades who've lost lives under my command. Because they chose to fight in each battle.. Just as I chose this. But if there is something that... I can do for them. Something I can do for the dead... Then it is to win! I must keep winning to attain my dream. The same one they clung to, and risked their lives for!! To realize my dream, I will perch on top of their corpses.. It is a blood-smeared dream, after all. I don't regret or feel guilty about it.. But to risk thousands of lives while never getting myself dirty. It's not a dream that can be so easily realized!" - Griffith
I had a Neutral Good Aasimar Conquest Paladin that I loved playing. "W-wait, your an angel right? aren't you supposed to have mercy?" "You and I must have met different angels, mate."
It would be really cool to play as an oath of conquest paladin who had intents on asserting dominance over barbarian tribes infamous for raiding and destroying small villages. The paladin could call out the leader of the tribe and just say "No more" as he vanquishes the creature and gains the title of chieftain for himself before leading the tribe into a new peaceful era of harmony with civilization
Might use this to help make 3 kingdoms Cao Cao, he wanted to end the chaos of the land but he believed that only he can do that and he believed violence was needed to put the chaos down
my paladin who is a fallen angel Banadus was an angle of Bahamut. She was created during that last few years of the last great war between the gods. She followed bahamut for many years after that serving him. OIne day she grew tired of serving him and wished to be free. Asmodeus saw this and offered her freedom in exchange For her to attack Bahamut. She took this deal that atemted to attack Bahamut. She failed and was hunted into exial. After returning to Asmodeus now with the lose of her left arm he gave her an arm of a monster and banished her to the material plane as well as making her a Fallen Angle. Now she romes the world enjoying her freedom and causeing caos in Asmodeus's name.
A devotion Paladin will jump in front of a strike to protect someone, a vengeance Paladin will smash heads with righteous fury, a conquest Paladin will break an enemies willpower and spirit.
Interesting idea. What went into my head when hearing this was a paladin who gets their powers from a deity, but ultimately serves a nation/city/kingdom and spreads their influence, regardless of what they personally believe.
Nicholas Didato That could work but personally that sounds more like Oath of The Crown. I see what you mean though, I'm thinking maybe like an evil kingdom or some sort of extreme king could have Oath of Conquest Paladins serve him
That's true. Almost forgot about the Crown Oath. That's the one where it's made to help allies in battle. Conquest seems more self-oriented, but I guess we'll see its setup next month.
I'm playing a Conquest paladin. He rules through fear; very Machiavellian. I used my Channel Divinity today to keep my own party in line! They're my bitches now!
In all honesty, I love the Oath of Conquest the most out of all Paladin oaths in 5e. There is so much that can be done with backgrounds with the implied harshness of the oath, the relation to devils, and their view of what is right. The Oath of Conquest, in my opinion, makes for very interesting, multi-dimensional characters, moreso than most other oaths.
Oathbreakers are, by definition, evil. They broke the most sacred thing for them and that made them delusional. A conquest oathbreaker basically it's just a rebel that want an order to collapse down with any mean. I see what you mean (" the evil empire is killing innocents, the paladin can't stand by it" ) but since the paladin was so vowed to that it can't just simply drop it. Dropping it means losing the will to live basically. I would rather allow a specialization swap, with due time, to a more stereotipically good-aligned oath after the paladin seeks redemption, instead of falling to oathbreaker.
That would probably be an oath of redemption unfortunately. I wish that you could spin an oath breaker as good, but they’ve unfortunately planted it into evil much too firmly.
Just breaking your oath means you lose your paladin powers. To become an oathbreaker paladin, you need to break your oath FOR evil, FOR selfish ambition for power.
I played a oath of conquest paladin as a red dragon born who became an immortal tyrant by scaring the personification of death into submission so while you may kill him temporarily he will raise again and cleave your head from your shoulders
I’m currently setting up a Conquest Paladin with a more chaotic flavour. Their core idea is that all systems are corrupt, and those who abuse this corruption must be punished. They consider themself "the overthrower of tyrants".
Oath of Conquest Dragonborne wielding his Holy Avenger “Death to those who stand before my god and may the judges have mercy on their souls, for they will find none with me.”
That's very interesting... obviously he later became an Oathbreaker, but I always considered him under the Oath of Vengeance, especially with his sworn revenge on Mal'ganis and whatnot. But maybe you're right. He may have had some Oath of Conquest in there too, especially after he became the Lich King.
Abelhawk maybe he was oath of conquest up to when he first killed kel’thuzad or when he culled stratholme, then vengeance, then after frostmourne oathbreaker?
Not sure about Anderson. He might be a Paladin (in the DnD sense), or he might be some kind of Cleric. Honestly, I'd rather try to reproduce Anderson in a different game, like Mage: The Ascension.
Explaining the oaths through songs. If you've got any suggestions, feel free to let me know. I'm trying to have each oath come from a different band, but we'll see. Devotion: Sabaton-Last stand Ancients: ??? Vengeance: Even though I listen to punk rock sometimes, my memory sucks Conquest: Disturbed-Land of confusion/vengeful one
Imperious from Diablo 3. Sisters of Silence from Warhammer 40K. I have a question though...what deities (including non-evil ones) would a Conquest Paladin follow?
I play a Oath of Conquest Paladin. I wouldn't call him dark just, to quote DND Beyond, "I am inflexible in my thinking". P.S. Conquering Presence is amazing
I flavored an Oath of Conquest for one to be set up like Fire Emblem's Alm, he has a conquest against Duma, to free Duma's soul and save lives in the future. My character's conquest is against the bbeg, taking up arms to bring peace to the lands by defeating the evil lich for harvesting and corrupting souls. 3 levels of Paladin and 7 levels of Battle Master. My character hasn't given up on the people he's the people's blade while other strive to be the shield.
I played a Reborn who had levels in conquest paladin. He makes it his mission to slaughter and conquer every monster he sees until he finds the one that killed him (he's hoping through the slaughter he'll be able to remember what it is) 😅
My current paladin is dedicated to Jergal, god of the end of everything and has a love/hate relationship with undead. I'm trying to gather a small horde of zombies to carry my burdens whilst destroying the undead that have not been sanctioned by the church. Loving the idea of more evil paladins!
I'm currently playing a Paladin that's currently going through a similar crisis of faith in people. He got (slightly) better after a pep talk from the party's atheist Artificer (yes, an atheist in a D&D setting) but there's always the possibility that he forsakes his Oath of Devotion for an Oath of Conquest.
I was thinking about this, and I feel that I've come to the most plausible conclusion. The conquest Paladin seems to be the "I uphold the law at all cost, even if it means breaking it myself" kind of Paladin. So, as long as the Thief is more useful to the Paladin (as any Rogue should be capable of) as an ally, they have nothing to fear. And the moment the usefulness ends, the sneaky-sneak their way outta that show.
Honestly, I saw this and thought that it was inviting players to bring back the days of Lawful Dickery with Paladins. This video doesn't really assuage my doubt; if 4e did nothing else right, it was to tweak things so that the players of the Paladin and Rogue didn't default to seeing eachother as opponents (of/c it wasn't always the case, but in a pick up game with strangers the Paladin and Rogue would be sizing eachother up). Oath of Vengeance feels like permission is again being given to people who want to play a disruptive character to claim they're doing what they're doing as a class requirement.
Shame that Oath of Treachery didn't make the book. It was the one I've really been enjoying the most of the UA Paladins. Loving the Blackguards so will continue playing them when I can. Thankfully DMs have been receptive for the most part.
They previewed the entire Table of Contents for Xanther's Guide as one of the rewards for the charity thing they were doing. It didn't make the cut. Oath of Conquest and Oath of Redemption did. Sadly the Blackguard didn't make the cut. Likely due to the nature of them being potentially traitorous in the UA.
