Raise your hand if you've felt personally victimized by Japanese Beetles...😡 The most effective way to avoid pests in the garden is to strive for a balanced ecosystem that supports our native insects and wildlife 🤔 Why? Many of our native insects and wildlife (like birds and frogs) are actually predators of insects! For example, Ladybugs eat aphids! If you spray harsh chemicals on your aphids, your Ladybugs will also die, thus creating an unsustainable cycle where you are constantly buying chemicals, spending time in the heat spraying the chemicals and never really succeeding at keeping your plants from going through phases where it looks like they've been to battle 😔 Planting native plants in the right places and focusing on host plants is a great way to invite and keep beneficial insects in your garden which ultimately keep a balance for you 🙌 If you're struggling with pests now, try physical methods: like blasting your plants with a hose to knock pests off, or physically remove them with your hands, sometimes simply cutting back the plants and disposing of the pests in the trash can be very effective and result in a second bloom! Pure castile soap (we like Dr. Bronners) mixed with water can also be a safe and effective method if you feel you must spray 🌱 Chemicals hurt the good bugs as well as the bad bugs and if you've ever looked up what a ladybug looks like when it's younger, you can see how easy it is to misidentify a good bug for a bad bug, always think before your spray 😯
We will go into chemicals later this week to explain the harsh reality of the OMRI label and other well-advertised chemicals that are harmful in the garden
Give us a like and a follow to find it on your feed this week 🦋
