Get Rid of Spider Mites

Here's how I get rid of spider mites for my indoor grow tent (roses) and also how I deal with them outdoors. The two-spotted spider mite is an inevitable problem in my late summer garden - as soon as the weather turns hot and dry. The damage and threat to plants is much more pronounced indoors. Outdoors, beneficial insects bring them under control relatively quickly in my garden. In this video, I'll discuss some of the sprays that you can use to quickly bring spider mites under control, as well as a couple of predatory mites you can introduce to tackle the problem.

Ive been battling these for years. We have had a drought which has made it challenging to keep humidity high and they have decimated our veggies and ornamentals. This is one of the only genuinely helpful videos out there! They always seem to come back but controlling a small population is so much easier. For those wondering, don't bother with the homemade vinegar or chilli sprays, they did nothing for me other than strip the natural oils from the plants making them more vulnerable.

I'm having similar drought issues. They are wreking the plants, especially the fruit and I don't quite know what to do, especially since they're outdoor plants.

I find that if you are going to invest your time spraying things like the underside of the leaf, you might as well just use soapy water and a sponge. Takes care of the majority of the mites especially those under the webbings. You can even customize the size of the sponges by cutting them up or use a very soft bristle toothbrush. Plus there is zero risk of the mites developing resistance as you are killing them via physical action instead. This is awesome for the start of the infestation and should prevent most infestations from getting out of control. You obviously need to regularly scout by looking closely at your crops at least weekly, which you should be doing anyway. Thankfully spider mites are so easy to spot.

After having a massive outbreak in my house, just found out these suckers also survive in aquatic surface plants. Yep. Had to take all the plants off my sunroom, only to find out that they still managed to call dibs on a tiny aquarium with some surface plants (they managed to create small webs between the water surface and the aquarium walls. Tiny nasty little creatures.

Something that worked for me (at least on a lemon tree) - I set it outside. My hypothesis was that the army mites in nature would rally, and save my little tree. So I put it outside. And it worked. Brought the tree inside for winter, and it did fine. No sign of spider mites.

Hi it is much better to try to find local bugs... If you can find a place in your area that sells bugs. This is better. Ordering bugs from a random place, this can destroy the bugs that are indigenous to your area. I mean you can buy ladybugs online and they can go escape and make sick the ladybugs that are already living in your area. So before buying cheap bugs random online, search locally. please.

bayer 3 in 1 is probably the best thing on the market for mites. It's an actual true mitecide. From what I've read pyretherium or however you spell it isn't even completely effective mites are extremely resistant to even pesticides. I know bayer 3 in 1 is the best at least it was a few years ago maybe something better is out now because in the salt water reef hobby we have a very annoying pest that is a salt water mite that resists all coral chemical dips. Bayer 3 in 1 is what is used to dip corals to truly kill off all pests. Bayer 3 in 1 completely solves the issue in one spray but it is a chemical. I also use it for my house plants. Every 6 months I spray everything outside and after an hour I rinse off my houseplants to get rid of any residue since it should have killed everything by then and also soaked into the plants good enough as a systemic. Thought I should share since mites really are a nightmare to get rid of. I wish there was something I could just spray my plants inside and not have to wash off and was natural safe effective but have never heard of such a thing. There are plants that react badly to neem oil.

It seems odd to me that you didn't mention abamectin. It seems odd because the only place I could obtain it was from a rose grower in the USA. It's a natural product, made from fermented fungus, and is harmless to humans. It's actually used internally in medicine. The bottle I had contained 8 ounces, and yes it was expensive. The best things usually are. My bottle lasted over 10 years and was still effective (even though I eventually upped the dose to 4X). Plants are not affected by it as they are by soaps and oils. With all the problems with mites so many growers have, it puzzles me that the BEST solution is the one nobody mentions. I want the cure, not the treatment ;) The brand name is Avid. A bottle can be shared to reduce expense. Single application can be effective, because it has residual translaminar properties. EDIT: It does have some toxicity for a very small percentage of humans, and dogs are sensitive to it. It's something that is rarely used, so exposure to it is likely to be very minimal.
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 4 года назад
I'm familiar with Avid from my day job in horticulture. Toxicity is a concern for me (see the label: www.syngenta.ca/pdf/Labels/AVID_1.9_EC_24485_en_pamphlet.pdf ) There's also an issue of pesticide resistance, which is hastened if you don't rotate with other chemicals from a different class.
@pursaveer9027
@pursaveer9027 4 года назад
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm , I get your point, and it's up to individual choice, I guess. I found that Avid worked so well, there was no need to try anything else, so I never had to employ IPM. Also, it wasn't roses I used it on :)

Thank you for this comprehensive video. I really appreciate it. I would like to order plants for next year, but spider mites, grubs, crickets, grasshoppers, and aphids together have killed so many things in the last two years. I had to reseed the lawn, and replace several plants. I still haven't replaced several more, and more plants are dying. I feel like this coming year, I should just focus on biological controls. Do you think a year will be enough to get the situation under control?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 2 года назад
I like your focus on biological controls, but let me suggest that it's not an either/or situation. Establishing some specific families and genera of plants will help support your efforts with predators and parasitoids. Think early blooming perennials and annuals from the mustard family (aubrieta, iberis, alyssum, lobularia) to get your predators a head-start, or small flowered members of the carrot family (ammi, fennel, astrantia, eryngium) to support hoverflies and others. One year may help a lot, but I don't think there's an actual finish line. More biodiversity will generally reduce outbreaks, but some pests may still "break through"

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Thank you so much. I will look to seed my yard with them, and a few other natives that I just happen to like. @FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 2 года назад
That's a tough one. I'm an impatient guy, so I'd probably err on the side of trialing plants & bulbs at the same time as addressing the grubs. @FraserValleyRoseFarm

With a large tree, it depends on what kind of effort you're willing to put in. Often, a sharp spray of water to the undersides of the leaves will reduce the mite populations an awful lot. That's easier said than done on a large tree.

By eye the webbing of spider mites is quite fine and very tight to the surfaces of the plant. You can usually see some "schmutz" (mites, their eggs, their cast skins) in the webbing, so it's usually a bit dirty looking. Search google images for "spider mite webbing" for some examples.

I'll cross my fingers and toes too! Make sure to have a look at your temperature and humidity to best benefit the predator population. In Fahrenheit, it's 70 to 85 degrees, and humidity from 60 to 90%. Best luck!

I was wondering what type or brand of soap I could use to mix in with the neem oil? I bought the Dyna-Gro Pure Neem Oil you recommended, but forgot about soap! My fiance uses something called green soap, so I didn't know if maybe that would work. I just don't want to harm my crotons. I made the mistake of using dish soap before on another plant, so I wanted to get it right.
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 3 года назад
I've only ever used insecticidal soap (potassium salts of fatty acids) - checked the wikipedia article after reading your question, and it looks like some people have had success with "green soap" as well. For caution (both with soap and neem oil) keep your rates low to start and observe after the first application for any damage to the leaves.

This is good info. Thanks. Do you struggle at all with the Japanese Beetles? They love to eat roses and are quite the pest.
@FraserValleyRoseFarm

Hi Barbara - I don't know how long our luck will hold up, but so far we've only spotted Japanese Beetle in one neighborhood in Vancouver. They're working hard to keep it from spreading. I've seen what the pest can do (mainly from here on RU-vid) and I really hope they're successful. It looks like a nightmare!

Can spider mites get on oak trees or cedar trees ? If so I think they are in my house coming from the trees is this true ?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm

Different species of mites attack different plants. The two-spotted mite is a generalist, but not the same pest, I think, as you'd find on a cedar.

I have desert rose seedlings and mature plants that bloom, they were beautiful, even picot worthy until, .these fast moving reddish brown insects attacked the table and began crawling throughout the plants. I've also seen frogs and gekos on the table so I thought they might have dropped something on the plants. Now I see the spider webs from leaf to leaf on a few plants. The foliage is brown, the healthy leaves have turned yellow and are falling off . On the underside of the leaves you can see the damage. I have sprayed the plants with antibacterial soap and next day with neem oil .I'm sweeping up green and yellow leaves every day.. I read somewhere that desert roses don't like there roots sitting in water, while I do have good drainage, I struggle with trying to balance their need for water in hot humid Central Florida, in the full sun. What I'm doing is obviously not working . Any suggestions ?

Can you spray with neem oil to prevent from getting spider mites or does it only work if you already have them?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm Год назад
It can help to reduce larger outbreaks, but I haven't found it completely effective as a preventive.

Be careful about the concentration of the soap - it can be hard on the foliage. Yes, that sounds like a promising method.

Can you tell me if the predatory mites are harmful to pets? I have birds, and I'm worried if I get an army of them, they'll go after my birds when they're done w/ the spider mites. Really love the idea of them, though.
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 4 года назад
Hi Ramona - no risk to your birds, the predatory mites only hunt for other little arthropods (usually plant pests, although I hear they will cannibalize if they run out of prey)
