Henlo, friends! I didn't really mention how to use DE to control flies in the coop. You can spread it all over the floor but it can get pretty dusty, especially in the drier months. I would put it only in problem or potential problem areas. :-)

I've only been backyard chicken keeping for 3 years. However this has been my worst year for flies!!!!! Nothing has helped. Not essential oils, not my bug zapper, fans, I literally removed my deep litter of pine shavings and replaced it with hemp, fly traps, etc Flies , flies and more flies !!!! I AM GOING INSANE!!!!!! and to add to that fun. We just went thru a very very WET season so my yard was a mess. Everybody has bumblefoot! And now because of the heat Everybody has runny poop. So I gotta wash bums and fix feet on almost my whole flock. I. Hate. Summer. Venting over.

@@JD-dh7bk oh man I’m so sorry. The weather patterns have been so wild this year and it’s definitely the perfect storm for flies. Bumblefoot is contagious, so make sure to disinfect the roosts. You will get through it!

Saw this on pinterest. I take those water filled fly traps with the pop up top. Drill out a hole in 5 gallon bucket lid, glue in the pop up top only, prop it open with a clothes pin. Add 2 gallons of water and lots of extra bait bags and other stinky meat bits. I threw in spoiled tuna 🤷‍♀️. Sit buckets away from your areas needed, check the water and add more bait later on. I don't know where flys go but their not around my doors or in the house.

The best stuff that I use is similar to your last product mentioned. One year the flies were insane - I bought a fly trap from Home Depot (I've tried a similar product from their competitor, and it did not work nearly as well). It's just a bag with a small sack of attractant - that has got to be nastiest thing I've ever smelled....never get it on your hands!! You add water to the line and viola - in a day or two, the flies have filled the bag and almost none are in the yard. It is the most amazing product I have ever used. Although I would not let chickens eat the dead flies from that bag - that is disgusting - and they would probably die or we would die from their smell. :-) Can't imagine how horrible their eggs would taste!

Yep. I know it's not exactly the same but we had Japanese Beetles pretty bad for a couple years before we moved. I was sick of them decimating our plants so we went and bought those infernal bag traps. We followed the directions, including regarding wind, but they attracted so many MORE that not only did ours get eaten up, but our neighbor's trees got obliterated too...and in just a matter of days! I felt *HORRIBLE* and vowed that never again would I waste hard-earned money on that crap again!

It's interesting that you mentioned lime. I was wondering why I see flies in my coop so rarely. The so-called coop is a basement actually and now I have 28 chicken and 40 chicks (to replace the old generation gradually, the intention is to keep less than 30 adults at any time) in about 25 sq metres (278 sq ft), it is pretty crowded, i.e. now I have exactly 1 individual per 4 sq ft, but usually they have more than double that area. I have 4 slit windows, which I keep open throughout the year except winter when only one is partially open but has an aspirator with a timer that turns it on for 15 minutes every hour... I do not change the bedding too frequently and do not change it ever during and around winter period for about 5-6 months. I do not heat the basement and it gets pretty cold. Whatever relative warmth exists there is due to the rotting bedding... But whenever I could feel the smell of ammonia, I give it a turn, top it up a bit and sprinkle generous handfuls of hydrated lime... It really helps. My chicken never had any breathing problems so far. I mean if you could smell it at 1.5 metres above ground, can you imagine how it would smell at chicken-height? But the lime takes care of it effectively. Perhaps that's why I do not have any flies even in the hot summer. And, lime has another good side to it. Part of it will eventually be eaten by the chicken unintentionally. It will stick to food they will be picking from the ground and it is calcium! I do mix a few spoonfuls of lime in their hydrated food from time to time too and never had any issues with calcium deficiency ever. I do give them crushed egg shells whenever available too, it is better digested and absorbed than lime, it is calcium carbonate as opposed to the lime, which is calcium hydroxide. But still, lime mixed to the feed is good as a calcium source.

I have a question, I clean the tray in the bottom of the roost in the coop everyday, I clean with vinegar and water, dry it out, and put lime or DE on the tray. Ok anyway, every morning when I go to clean there are these minute little bugs jumping all over the tray. What are they? How do I get rid of them. Oh by the way I have weird chickens, I tried your formula for the dust bath, with the dirt and DE, nope they just go make one out of natural dirt lol

I have a chicken question... maybe you have a video on it. I have a chicken who has losts a bunch of feathers. It's not mites/parasites, she's not being bullied... but she just looks like a hot mess. We noticed it starting after we had a pretty brutal storm sweep through the area so we thought it was stress induced (we also noticed some funky eggs from other girls as well after)... but it's been like 6 or 8 weeks and she's not showing signs of regrowing the feathers. She looks like she has alopecia...
@WelcometoChickenlandia
@WelcometoChickenlandia 25 дней назад
Sounds like she was either pushed into a molt from the stress or if she’s a new layer it’s not uncommon for them to go through a more significant spring molt. If she seems fine otherwise I would give it a little more time.
