I believe your protocol saved my hens life. Thank you, I’d been searching and googling for 2 days. Thank you for pointing out most other instructions are based on factory farms. My hens are 7 and 9, I’ve had them since they were 4 months old, a couple of trips to the vet for Vivianne but my Cupid has always been healthy. Vets are taking weeks to get into, I knew she didn’t have weeks. Thank you!

It’s also depressing to see the sick chicken dead the next day as most of the time they don’t survive it as some illnesses cannot be treated. Also factory farms should be illegal.

I realize this is about 2 years old but I found it very useful because I have a sick chicken. I normally have electrolytes available but I don't. My chickens get ACV in their water every evening and drink plain water during the day. They RUN to their ACV water after roaming the property all day and drink the plain water while they are roaming. Anyway, I'm actually going to give her a 5 minute Epsom salt bath in the morning so she has time to dry off during the day in the sun. I will bring her in if that doesn't work. She is eating because I make sure she gets something because she's been picked on around the feed bowl. Until today she's been holding her own and sleeps right next to my roo, Max, who appears to be protective of her. Tomorrow morning will be the test for Ms. Mae. I'll update this message when I know.

I know a chicken farmer and he has 30 k chickens. If one of his chickens get influenza all of those chickens are put down. He’s out of a living and all those chickens die. Which I went into see what it was like and it’s sad that those chickens are so squished together our chickens roam around all day so they are in heaven but a coyote can come get them anytime.

A word of caution: Many people recommend to keep sick chickens in a medium sized portable dog kennel which we have done before without any problems. Today, we had had a Buff Orpington in the kennel recovering from sickness. Apparently, she stuck her head between the metal bars for some reason and then panicked. She strangled to death before we could get her out. I believe plastic kennels would be a safer option or ziptie 1/2" mesh to the metal kennel.

I have a runt silky chicken, she has been so much smaller than the rest and started getting sick. I was afraid I was going to lose her so I started giving her hydrosol colloidal silver in a dropper and also as a nebulizer treatment. The first two times it work so beautifully getting the silver down into her lungs! She’s sick again and I’m doing the same routine and she’s getting better. She breves sometimes gasping for air and has a lot of mucus in her beak. Colloidal silver is antibacterial antiviral and .fungal . It is so powerful! I use it personally for my kids if they have toothaches, pink eyes, and also viruses. It is easy to get so I advise to have that in your first aid kit. Thanks for the video with all the important information.

Most respiratory infections of poultry are incurable. So I’d seek someone for testing. A lot of respiratory diseases are reportable to the USDA by federal law (if you’re in the USA). Don’t breed to sell and keep a closed flock.

Thank you for offering your guidance and a process I could implement right away 🙏 I’m so grateful 😊 Two of my 5 wk old chickens were culled this week and a 3rd was on her way until I found your REST info and was able to nurse the 3rd back to health. She’s still recovering but her strength is back and she was eating feed on her own today 🙌 I’m still not exactly sure what the cause was but I’m so grateful the worst is over now. Many Blessings and please know your contribution is appreciated and much needed. I had no one else to turn to for sound guidance and there’s a million contradictory opinions online. I even tried the backyard chickens forum with no feedback until we were already outta the woods thanks to your remedies. What was the worst week turned into a successful week. Thank you. for this video. It is a great reminder of what to do, as I get so nervous when faced with a sick chicken. I cannot find a vet that will see chickens and so I am totally on my own, which I don't like. I too wish they could tell me what is wrong. We use a very large dog crate for a hospital room and when a chicken is sick, we bring her in and put her in the crate in the kitchen. I always feel that if they are going to pass away, the least I can do is let them pass in a warm, comfy spot in peace. Not huddled in a corner getting pecked at. If I need supplemental heat or cooing, I use a small ceramic heater/fan. I put it a foot or so away from the door of the crate and the chicken can move in closer to it or move to the back of the crate away from it. These are all great tips. I keep electrolytes on hand at all times as I don't live near a feed store. Can you use pedialyte in a pinch?? Just wondering. Thanks again.

My chicken Is standing alone on one foot at times but not for a long period. I just introduced 2 new and she is one of them. I slowly itroduced them but had no major issues. She had a droopy comb when she first came but I treated her with DE and a tad of 7 dust to make sure she had no lice or mites. The comb came up but it is not pale at all. I had been fighting mites before they cMe but have it under control. No loss of feathers or scratching past the norm. She is next to last on the pecking order and the first couple of days they tried to gang up on her but it has settled down over the last week. I never left them unattended. She stays way away but she is eating and drinking. She and her sister are Barred rock with 5 Lavender, black and white orpingtons. They are all about 9 months. Her crop is not impacted nor soured and I used safeguard for worms. One of my orpingtons does have sour crop and she is quarantined. I will remove her tomorrow and start the R.E.S.T. Tonight wasn't possible. Do you have any thoughts on what it could be? They have oyster shells and grit. I feed them electrolytes and probiotics occasionally. They are on 18% layer and they get mealworms and corn as a treat occasionally. Thanks so much!
@WelcometoChickenlandia

It sounds like you are doing everything you can to help her! Unfortunately, it could be many different things and since I'm not a vet I can't really say for sure what's going on. Sometimes they stand on one foot and puff up a little when they are cold. If she's eating and drinking that's a good sign!

My chicken has a pale comb, paler than my other chickens. I don't know if this is normal for her, since it was that pale when I got her (she came with my new house). Her feather quality isn't very good, and lately she's had diahorrea and hasn't been laying (I'm assuming it's her diahorrea and I know she isn't laying). She's also less active and loud than the others, but she is still pretty active! I'm doing research on how to care for her, since she's 'just a chicken' my family would never pay to take her to the vet☹️ Poor chickens, they're not meant to lay so many eggs and it really takes a toll on their bodies! I try to feed most of their eggs back to them, but we really need to stop breeding them it's pretty cruel :( My chickens name is Lottie btw!

One of my chickens has problems with her crop quite regular. If you pick her up and squish her crop, you will feel it seems like gel is in it. You must hold her upside down by her ankles, stretch out her neck very gently, and massage her crop. This will cause all that grey liquid to pour out. Quite a lot can come out. You'll see them much happier afterwards

I understand. You would need to consult with a licensed veterinarian for specific diagnosis and treatment.

Yes you could use pedialyte without sweetener. Or you can make them! Lots of recipes online. :)

I think my chicken has wry neck. She can’t even stand straight and easily falls over. Only thing I found is vitamin E and Selenium which I started syringing to her tonight. She is in my basement sleeping now. I just hope she gets better. She was sleeping between me getting some drops of liquid in her.

Update: Wobbles lasted a week. Found her this morning. She was seemingly fine at last night’s 10 p.m. check. Very sad!! This is the chick who arrived quite unwell. I nursed her back. She was eating, drinking , and doing everything with the other chicks; but, she wasn’t growing like the others. With daily checks, I noticed her bone structure was also very different. She had bony profusions the other chicks didn’t. I can only guess the innerds weren’t right, either. I gave her the best week I could! I swore I wasn’t going to get attached but there’s always that needy one that gets under your skin.

@lrg613 we moved out in the country when I was in 3rd grade. My dad bought a 3-day old male cow and we brought him home in the bed of a pick up truck. Back then it was acceptable to ride in the back of a truck so I was back there with the baby cow. He wasn't super steady on his feet being only 3 days old and was in the back of a moving pick up truck. He was wobbly so I named him Wobbles. I bottle fed him and in time taught him to eat grain. He was a great cow.

@@robinragan1702 Great memory! Yes, we used to be given credit for having common sense, huh? We all rode in the back of pick ups with responsible drivers and I recall several times riding on the back of a convertible (not far) to the beach.

I'm sorry about Wobbles. I had a similar incident and same time frame, about a week. I was so sad and found Dahlia on RU-vid, but of course it was too late for that one. It was my first flock and I didn't know about mudbutt/pasty butt. I felt so awful, but now I know that I have a good source to go to. I was looking things up online and couldn't find anything. Apparently those online ones are mostly for factory farms and they probably wouldn't have cared about one chick with that issue. I am now constantly checking her page for old and new videos and am so grateful that God called Dahlia to do this for others.

We just had our first chicken die :( Went to put them in their coop for the night and one was laying dead. We have no idea how she died! It was quite a shock and there were many tears. We examined her and saw no sign of anything. We are worried about the eleven others! Any suggestions for us, on what to do to make sure there are no more lost? They are only one year old!

My father used to tell a story about a pillion passenger on a motorbike who turned his hat around to keep the wind from blowing it off while he rode on the motorcycle. The motorcycle crashed, the driver was okay but the pillion died. The medic reported that the pillion seemed okay until he turned his head around the right way. So stay off motorbikes if you are wearing your hat back to front!
