CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Chili (John Travolta) challenges Martin (Danny DeVito) to play a loan shark, then gives him some true-to-life direction.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A gangster is looking to get away from crooked deals and double-crossing people but ends up in the movie business anyway in this comic crime story. Chili Palmer (John Travolta) is a Miami-based loan collector for the mob trying to collect a gambling debt. His assignment takes him to Hollywood to collect money from Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman), a mildly sleazy producer of low-budget horror movies. Although Chili intends to hurt Harry if necessary, he takes a certain liking to him and an even keener interest in Karen (Rene Russo), Harry's girlfriend, whom Chili recognizes from Harry's grade-B monster epics. It seems Harry has a script that he feels is Academy Award material, and he could get the project off the ground if he could get the right actor for the lead -- say, the well-respected but egocentric (and diminutive) Martin Weir (Danny DeVito). Chili thinks he has a feel for the movie business and decides to see what he can do to persuade Weir to get behind the project. Chili soon finds himself hip deep in the film industry, which at least puts him in contact with a higher grade of scumbags than he's used to. But Chili isn't the only criminal Harry's been dealing with; he's been obtaining financing from Bo Catlett (Delroy Lindo), a drug dealer with a highly uncertain temperament. An intelligently constructed crime story and a hilarious look at the absurdities of the film business, Get Shorty was based on the novel of the same name by Elmore Leonard; Leonard based Chili on a real-life former gangster of his acquaintance, though Chili's model never worked in Hollywood.

lol I met DeVito a couple years ago and we were talking about Martin Weir and he told me he just did his best impersonation of Dustin Hoffman.

Actually the "Look at me" line came from the real Chili Palmer as that is what he would say to guys he had to collect money from.

@@atmadja19Shylock is the villain from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. He's a moneylender, so "shylock" is slang for loan shark, hence Martin getting mixed up (possibly intentionally). That's it really 😂

The way he "meditates" right before trying to find his gangster's face always cracks me up. Funniest thing thru the movie is how he says he hasn't read the script BUT promises he will.

Good example of the Travolta Rule: if John Travolta has a strong director and plays an understated, restrained character like Chili he does great. If he is allowed to play it too emotionally though or indulge his naturally theatrical bent, he quickly goes over the top.

@@hydewhyte4364 He was great in Face/Off... for most of the movie he was supposed to behave like Cage's character, who was quite flamboyant. It would have made no sense for him to rein anything in during that.

I had to read this book for a college class years ago before the movie was released. My prof had some experience working in film in LA and he talked about how actors would always fake their way thru taking a part without reading the script first, just like Martin in the movie.

I'm thinking Danny's dialogue in this scene was unscripted since he produced this film. And I also believe John and Rene improvised with their responses.

Supposedly, this is one of the few film adaptations of James Ellmore novels that actually works, but this looks lousy. Travolta all wrong for Chili Palmer, too big and formidable, no duality to him, no menace. DeVito only has one thing in common with Martin Weir, that he's on the short side. Honestly, Hollywood can't even make a film about making a Hollywood film.
