This car was built by Barris for the movie" Marriage on the Rocks" and was driven by Nancy Sinatra.

Maybe the Chief's car was the prototype and after he approved the design Max got issued the first new one off the CONTROL assembly line. In Maxwell Smart's world that could make sense. After all, it's Mel Brooks and Buck Henry!

George Barris was an amazing man. I first met him when I was 14 at the Autorama. I saw him so many times that when he would see my brother and I, he would bring us up to the front of the line. I have multiple autographs from him with one being a robert williams print ( 20th Season of International Auto Shows)signed by George.

Considering how tongue in cheek that show was I'm not surprised in the least that they'd do that. I'd be more surprised if they didn't. But they could have said that chief was trying it out before they sent it professionally into the field.

George Barris got TOP dollar for the Batmobile, Munster Coach and others. Since they were on a tight budget, the car may have been leased for a short time forcing them to cram it in a short period of time. It would be interesting to see if the car was used in other movies around that time. Thanks for another great discovery Rick..

Is no one else tickled by the fact that the sign says “Control HDQTRS” right in the outside of their loading dock?

The car was so inconspicuous the Chief couldn’t find it in a parking lot so they had to give it to someone else.

I'd be happy with the Sunbeam Tiger Max usually drove.

I just remember thinking it was odd that the head of a secret spy organization would drive something so flashy. This car was as subtle as a parade float. Thanks for this.

As a kid I figured that the Chief had gotten a hold of a prototype and the second episode was going to be more of the " spy staple" production model. Kids think weird things sometimes lol.

Max auctioned off the chief's car to come up with the ransom, then Max won the auction. A very funny episode and it was suprising to see the writers continue the joke in future episodes.

I don’t remember this one, but I remember the Shelby Mustang and the Tiger that Max drove.

Hi, Rick! Yes, I DID notice that they tried to pass off this one car as TWO SEPARATE CARS, and I noticed this on the show’s initial run in 1965! (Since they didn’t credit the George Barris Kustom Shop or Ford, I had no idea it was a model of Mustang. I thought it had more of a GM look than that of a Ford, anyway.) But as far as making a change to the appearance of the car goes, this would have been easy and VERY cheap: spray watercolor paint! I don’t know if they still make the stuff, but there were a couple of brands of it back then. Since the REAL base color of the car was white, they could have sprayed just about ANY color over that in watercolor, then easily removed it after shooting the next episode with a good, hands-only car wash. Right NOW there are plenty of 100% hand car wash establishments around. I’ve taken my last several cars to one on Venice Boulevard at Sepulveda in West Los Angeles. I’ve used them exclusively with my own cars and a few rentals for so long, they know me there. If I ask them for something special, I know I’ll get it. So it seems to me that a watercolor coat sprayed over the REAL paint would be no problem for these guys. And a Pro could add a translucent watercolor coat of ANY OTHER COLOR over the existing white base coat that car already had very easily with just regular aerosol cans, although a professional would most likely prefer to use a pro spray gun with an air tank and compressor.

Well, being a Hollywood Actor and Director, my guess would be that they got the car for 1 full day of shooting [ 8 - 12 hours ] and probably just shot several scenes with it during that full day for what they call "High Value Cinematography" or Production Value - ie: Artwork, Architecture, Scenery, Trains, Custom Cars, etc - that is visually stimulating and usually costs a lot of money to lease -- and therefore adds "production value" to the finished product [ the film or in this case TV Series ] .. An 8 hour shooting schedule generally give you 8 minutes of finished film, so if these scenes between the two episodes adds up to anywhere close to 8 minutes, then it took the production crew roughly 8 hours to film it all on a single day's shoot .. it looks like both episodes were shot at the exact same location [ the building in the background ] , which means they were both shot at the same place on the same day .. probably one in the morning and one in the afternoon .. or maybe one scene was shot for two hours and the other scene was shot for two hours, depending on how much time the director blocked out for each scene .. if the scene in the episode is 2 or 3 minutes long, then it likely took them 2 or 3 hours to shoot it .. I'd have to watch the episodes to see how long each scene is where the car is visible ..

I had just turned 3 years old in November 1965, so I missed these. I think re using this car in succession is to add to the comedy schtick of the show. Get Smart was loaded with stuff like this.

Pretty subtle vehicle. Understandable that they expected viewers to forget they had seen it in the preceding episode.

An early use of square headlights. The 1967 Chevy Camaro Waikiki concept also had square headlights, which surprised me when I saw them in a book as a kid. I'm guessing some European cars were using them at the time, but it wouldn't start appearing in the US until 1975.

Funny. I thought I'd seen every episode back when it was in production, and I may have, but I do not remember ever having seen this car. And I loved cars even back then!

Easy to explain: The Chief was supposed to brief Max on >his< new spy supercar _last_ week, but at the last second the Chief got greedy and pulled rank to have it to himself for a week. When he does the official introduction to Max, Max has to play along, “Oh yes, I totally didn’t see you hogging this all to yourself for a week, Chief. Please tell me more about this car that I’ve totally never seen before.”

The first broadcast order of episodes is not always the order in which they were filmed. The introduction of the car and the later use of the car may have gotten reversed sometime due to some other decision at the network.

It's comical how they had big CONTROL HDQRS signs on the building exterior. Well, now I think they probably had just one of those signs and moved it back-and-forth for different scenes.

I don't remember this car for Get Smart, but it is pretty cool. Other famous Barris cars were the Batmobile and the Drag U La car for The Munsters.Thanks for showcasing this Get Smart car.

And equally interesting, at area, the "STOP" area in particular, was in an episode of the BATMAN TV series.

I don’t watch a show like “Get Smart” to figure out how the show works; I watch it to laugh and enjoy its absurdity!

Unfortunately, I'm old enough to remember those times. There was no streaming service, very little home video equipment and many folks had black and white TVs. Chances are, we really didn't remember specific details staring us all in the face. By the 1980s, there was outlets for classic TV documentaries (mostly on cable) and they would be the ones who would point these kinds of things out. Great job on this.

Anyone who has spent time in the military or working in a government job is familiar with the acronym “R.H.I.P.”-Rank Has Its Privileges. The Chief, who outranks Max, picked the car for his use when it first arrived at Control. He drove for a couple of days, got kidnapped and then gave it to Max as if it were a new car (new to Max). I had that happen to me in my career a few times… The realities of Hollywood and how tv shows were written and filmed back in those days probably made it necessary to shoot as much film as possible with this car before the rental time period was up. The two episodes in question were probably not filmed in continuous order(one after the other), but in scenes where the shooting location, props and studios were available.

I have to admit that I don't remember ever seeing this car before. As a big Mustang fan I thought that I knew most of the more famous Mustang "star cars", but then I never caught any of this cars prior appearances. I guess I also missed most of the earlier season(s) of Get Smart.

I noticed it, when I viewed both Season 1 episodes when they were broadcast back to back in 1965 as a kid at home parked in front of my tv set in my own bedroom. *"Ingeniously is pronounced: "In-Jeanne-You-Us-Lee".

Hi Rick! Did you ever cover blooper in Max's apartment involving the invisible shield? Of course Max had to run in to it but when that happened you could see some of Don Adams' makeup was left on the plastic. Did anyone else notice? Sorry, can't remember what episode or the plotline.

That show was so campy and fun! George Barris is legend! I think they may have left it just like the other episode as a sort of comedy Easter egg. Always awesome Rick!

Television is theatre. Theatre is the suspension of disbelief, using your imagination to go where the players are taking you. Being old, I am used to not expecting absolute reality in the stories, it limits the possibilities.

I'll have to apologize again for this blooper. It was my first day as a "Automobile Wrangler", as my position used to be called back in those days. I was asked by the Director to get a vehicle, for the scene, from the Props Department, which maintained, and decorated, many different vehicles, for the use on different productions. I forgot to reserve a vehicle, in advance. I only had 2 vehicles to choose from. It was either the white mustang that ended up being used, or the Flintstones car, with no engine. So, under the circumstances, I think I made the right choice. I never thought Rick would notice this blooper, many years later....😵‍💫 Give me a break. IT WAS FIRST DAY!!!!!😂

They did something similar with the green "experimental" car The Reactor over at least three shows including Bewitched and Star Trek! It was dressed up again and used as Catwoman's car on Batman when Eartha Kitt picks up the Joker in it.

You kind of have a weekly reset as necessary, without guarantees and of your own recognition and effort. Besides not changing Barris' work, they probably wouldn't try to pass an obviously custom car off as "a different car".

I'd almost bet money that this is not built from a Mustang, but rather from a '60s AMC AMX. It seems impossible to check as every photo I see on the net of a Zebra uses this exact car as the example. Were there no other ones made? Strange. Any car guys out there who can clear this up?

I think they should have just switched the air date for the episodes, that way it would look like the chief confiscated the fancy car for his own use, then it wouldn't be so confusing to viewers.

I was 11 when these shows aired. I just assumed the chief had it first to test it out. Then gave it to Max. I knew it was the same car. At 11. But I am smart

They should have ran these two episodes in reverse order. Unless you have a TV lineup for when these were first run that said otherwise. If ran in reverse order, the car's appearance could make more sense. I recently watched the complete series of It's A Living and between the second to the last season and the last season even more, episodes were running out of order for background stories to continue. It was making it difficult to follow, when someone was married before a Bachelorette party, or had a baby and then 2 episodes later going to the hospital for the baby.

I'm guessing they flip flopped the order of episodes. He probably gave it to Max for CONTROL use but once it became declassified and de-weaponized, the Chief took the car for himself. The production knew the network would jumble the production order and hoped one would air one before with some space in between but that didn't happen.

While the story of the car is interesting, the building in the background took my attention. It apparently is part of the studio lot. In some of the stills you can see inside and it looks like an large open area. Rick, what do you know about this builging?

I haven't been able to find any production dates for Get Smart but it's quite possible that Our Man in Leotards was shot before Satan Place. This was a very common practice, for example Man Trap was the first episode of Star Trek to air but was actually the fifth episode produced.

Back then, it was difficult to notice because the episodes were a week apart!

First, I'll say another excellent video, Rick! I really enjoy your projects, and most of all your fantastic attitude. I wish I could buy it in bulk and drop-spray it all over the nation. They probably went cheap by reusing the car in this way because Mr. George Barris' services were probably not cheap at all heh heh. In addition, instead of going for the base model Mustang with a six cylinder engine, they opted for a factory V8 engine car, as indicated by the five-lug nut wheels. That decision was a more expensive one as well. Another (possible) indicator that this was an expensive car that needed to be reused for financial reasons is that if you look at around 2:20, you'll notice an emblem on the lower fender behind the front wheel that "appears" to be a Cobra version emblem to my tired, old eyes. Mustang enthusiasts, help me out please. If it IS a Cobra emblem, then the car was significantly more expensive than a base model because the Cobra would have been the top of the line. I have no idea if Cobra was even a thing in 1965 though, so it may have been an ID emblem used by Mr. Barris, or it could be a glob of road tar! One other idea...this car may actually have been based off of the Mustang's sibling, the Mercury Cougar, which was an enlarged version of the Ford Mustang to allow for more relative luxury and placement within Mercury's more upscale line. I say this because this car is obviously longer than a Mustang, and something about those fender lines brings the Cougar to mind. No, I wasn't alive back then, but as a young teen I helped my uncle restore a 1965 Mustang for his daughter's 16th birthday back in the '80's, so these old cars were an early high-water mark in my love of cars.

This is easily explainable. The car gets built, the Chief receives the vehicle, the Chief drives the vehicle around for a while to check it out, then the Chief assigns the vehicle to someone else. Sure, same car. Obviously, the same car. And, I didn't see any evidence that they tried to hide or distract from that. So, clearly, the boss drove it for a bit, before sending into the field. No big mystery, there.

Maxwell smarts car had a payphone in the console gov. budget , radar antenna , machinegun came up through a trapdoor in the hood , ejector seat , smoke screen ,

There is no reason to use this car as a car made for a spy to drive. A spy should use a car that does not attract attention.

They likely couldn’t afford another custom car within their budget, but they could just have used a stock vehicle for the earlier episode, as the chief’s car, it makes little sense that they used it as the chief’s vehicle to begin with. Obviously, it makes sense that they would have a custom car built for following episode, however, when “Get Smart” originally aired it was scheduled for once a week, and for those who regularly watched the show, it would have been painfully obvious that the same vehicle was used in the previous episode, fortunately, this show was not taken seriously, as it was a sit com, and as such, details such as the car previously being the chief’s, would have been easily overlooked, by most viewers, with the exception of a few which would have found this puzzling, and a violation of continuity protocols. Often, shows from the fifties on through to the eighties did not have specialists assigned to keeping details of continuity from sticking out like a sore thumb. Good movies have people in charge of continuity and often most good series also have someone keeping track of continuity details, this is especially important since often many scenes are shot multiple times and are occasionally also filmed from different angles as well, if there wasn’t someone keeping track of the details, they would easily be discovered by viewers in the theater or at home on their television. It would be interesting to know what happened to the vehicle, and where it is now located. Thank you for sharing your observations and posting this video! Well, the same house interior was used over and over from one episode to another in the first season of Mannix. Same for the backgrounds seen through windows, and even the same telephone. Literally everyone had the same "office green" telephone in their homes, apartments, and wherever during that first season. As for Mannix's company car, all Barris did was cover the back seat of that Toronado with a tonneau cover, added some spinner hubcaps, and called it a day. To your question, no, they didn't think we'd notice and didn't care if we did.

Government issue, they all look alike

It was originally broadcasted, in the mid 60's. A whole week went by, before the next episode. Lots of distracting things were going on at that time. Nobody would have noticed anything.

I think everyone understood implicitly that it's for a fun episode each week and people just rolled with it when stuff like this happened originally.

So ugly they used it twice.

101th! The difficulty of understanding is that what may have been acceptable actions in the past, may no longer be acceptable into the future of given action! Great example is the whole Knight Rider series! Something that was awesome to watch in the past, but given the tricks used then for the view of a "self driving car" would be unacceptable today! Yea! Hahahahaha! 😇

It would make sense if it belonged to the chief then he gave it to Max.
