Hogan's Heros was shot on film, and tv back then had a different aspect ratio from the film frame, including a mask known as the "safe area" to account for the overscanning of old CRT tech. The area of the parked cars would most likely be outside of the safe area, and not visible at all on tv's back then.
@SSN515
@SSN515 4 месяца назад
Yep. I was going to say the same thing. Resolution wasn't HD in those days either and they weren't planning on shooting these for viewing decades later. If you look, you see that they covered the closer in cars on the left with tarps to break up the silhouettes and make them look like snow or covered military vehicles.
@LaurenWeinstein
@LaurenWeinstein 4 месяца назад
Yep. overscan is definitely a thing, and is the cause behind many top of frame surprises when viewed today. It's also the reason why when viewing old "The Tonight Show" episodes now you can frequently see the boom mike moving back and forth above the speakers (I attended a number of those tapings by the way but that's another story). However, this HH episode case is a particularly egregious one even taking routine overscan "sloppiness" into account.
@RichFoster-zk3jo
@RichFoster-zk3jo 4 месяца назад
In addition TV sets had a mask that covered portions of the TV tube in order to help hold it in place. When I was doing animation in the mid-70s we had a field guide chart that showed the various "safe areas" for TV and theater formats.
@musicalBurr
@musicalBurr 4 месяца назад
This is the correct explanation! So in fact the film-makers didn’t mess up too badly. I suppose for safety they could have tarped up those cars, but who knows what pressure they were under “on-the-day”. I think I noticed this too recently watching HH on FreeVee on Amazon. Oddly Amazon has dropped a few episodes from the lineup, no idea why some are missing. Anyway… I’m getting off topic. :-)

@@LaurenWeinstein Before it was broadcast on TV, in the 1970's the first episode (or perhaps it was the pilot film) of "Buck Rogers" was shown in theaters, where I could plainly see the boom mike moving around on the top of the frame!

There was a crossover time travel thing with this show and the Batman show of the 60s. Batman and Robin are climbing the bat rope up the side of a building, and who opens the window but Col. Klink! The Bat Duo tell Klink to say hi to Col. Hogan for them. There's 20 years difference in the time period of these 2 shows, a fun insert!

The Hogan's Hero's Stalag set was located on the "40 Acres" back lot in Culver City. Aerial views show lots of cars parked near the set so not surprising they would overlook something like that, especially considering they were cranking out these episodes to meet deadlines.

HH was my fave TV show, ever. Must have seen this episode ten times. Because I always watched this episode in low definition, I barely noticed the parking lot. The continuity error from HH that always sticks with me is a shot of a street with retail shops and ALL of the buildings were obviously built around 1960. Made me cringe in the 1970's and I cringed again a few years ago when I re-watched that episode.

And the woman in this episode, Ann Prentiss got into a lot of trouble. This from IMDB: "Sadly, she spent the final years of her life in prison after being convicted by a California court in June 1997 of assaulting her 86-year-old father at his home and later trying to hire a convict to kill her father, her brother-in-law Richard Benjamin and her nephew Ross Benjamin. I have seen this blooper. There are more like it where that crew parking makes cameos. There are shots where lights and stands appear not including reflections. There shots on the stage where the camera shot off the edge of the set. Usually this was the roof lines. The crew has made cameos in the background as well. The speed in which these shows were shot and put together was incredible for the time. Usually 3 days with the fourth for pick up shots (Any episode). This is a good episode, well written.

Well, TVs had different aspect ratios on back then, and so shows were filmed with that in mind, not today's standards. This wasn't visible back when the episode first aired, and was appropriately cropped out. The difference between this and those other errors you mentioned is that these were edited out at the time, the others weren't.
@AmericanActionReport

@@Perseus7567 The TV and movie aspect ratios then were taller and narrower than now, pretty much as you see it in the images ricknineg posted above. Only if they were re-edited for wider screens would the parking lot be cropped out.

I saw something recently that I think was a bit of a writing blooper. A local female from the underground has been arrested by the gestapo just on a vague suspicion so Hogan captures Burkhalter's sister and sets up a trade. Well, now you have just gone and told the gestapo that she IS an underground agent for sure and valuable enough to do this for. There is no way she would be released alive even if it was a generals sister. Or if she was released, she would be closely followed and re-arrested later. Also... What is Burkhalter's first name? In one episode his sister calls him "Hansie" but in another episode its a different first name and at some point we find out that "Hans" is also Shultz's first name.

The production schedule on these episodes was tight and getting tighter. The show was popular, and as a show gets popular demands for fast production always happen. So they had this scene Day for Night it was probably a quick cut, and it took 4k and frame by frame to find it. No harm no foul. The cast and crew probably had a laugh or two and plunged into the next show, most likely because the management was standing just off-set with a bullwhip. There is nothing harder on cast and crew than a weekly show. It is true today and it was true back then too.
