I've been using plastic tubing and a coat hanger for years to do this job. Think I might get in to producing my own line of tools and charging huge amounts of money for them.

Final statement. "I can't imagine doing this job without it" - this guy doesn't have much imagination.

I used a long thread to drag the pots through the hole and used my fingertip to support the pots. That worked out well and didn't cost me anything.

Did you guys watch the video where I made one of these out of copper house wire? Seriously...;-) Took 5 mins to bend one up. If you're gonna make a tool that looks like bent coat hanger, at least doll it up with a handle or some flashy logo;-)

I found out a way that worked for me: to attach a piece of sewing thread to the threaded part of each potentiometer, long enough to leave some portion on the pot hole and another on the pickup hole. If you disassemble previously installed pots, you will end up with pieces of sewing thread for each pot. If you are starting with an empty guitar, you can use a piece of wire 20cm long that you will use as a needle to insert the sewing thread through the pot hole and pick it up with your fingers or pliers through the pickup hole. To get the pots to their final destination you have to pull the corresponding ends and help the shaft to align with the hole with the help of long nose pliers.

use plastic tubing slip over the pot shaft pull thru the holes won't mar the guitar.

Wow! I was cursing and swearing trying to get the pots remounted, this video saved me further grief! Made me one of those doohickies and remounted the pots pronto!!

I just use surrgical tubing! just push the tubing over the shaft where the knob goes, then before you push the pot into the cavity through the F-holes, push the other end of the tubing through the hole from the inside, then gently pull and the pot shaft will disappear into the cavity and pop up through the hole

This is a purchase that somebody makes who is just good enough at guitar repair to absolutely screw up the electronics for the entire guitar, then is too freaked out to get their head around re-shaping their own wire hanger, so they order it from StewMac, wait the week for it to arrive, then they use the tool to hook everything back up, then they plug the guitar in only to then realize that they have to take it all apart again because they don't actually know what they are doing.

this should really be called the StewMac expensive fancy bent coat hanger......how they can con suckers into buying there vastly over priced junk is the real mystery....i was one of those suckers once and bought a couple things from them but never again.....the items i bought i could get and did from other places vastly cheaper......i think this thing costs $12.95 + tax on there site......they should feel ashamed and embarrassed for charging that kind of money for a fancy bent coat hanger........

If you can't bend a bit of copper wire for yourself then you shouldn't be touching ANY guitar repairs!

Wow! An acoustic. Practically a dreadnought. Try the one in my profile pic. It’s at most 2 inches deep. At most. But that’s where the pickups are. There’s 1 vol, 1 tone, 3 way selector and 2 mini DPDT toggles. At those spots it’s or course shallower. Got anything for that? ‘Cos I’m at the end of my rope. When you can’t see anything you’d at least like to feel what’s going on. Not this nightmare. It’s all dark. Just the same noise repeating over and over and over. Einstein’s definition of insanity is definitely true. I apologize for my rudeness. It’s just that I’ve been at this project for 3 days.
