I've worked in the sign business for over a decade playing it safe as an employee(well paid) but never an employer because I'm hesitant about opening my own shop. You basically told me everything i already knew but you put it in such a way that it gave me the motivation to finally jump out on my own and now I'm on the cusp of doing so. I'm a fabricator for over 30 years worked for a few reputable companies in Houston Texas after COVID 19 things had changed a lot nobody wants to hire me at the rate I was some companies want me for my experience but their rate offers are really low way to low now I'm trying to start my own sign company got the equipment needed I'm insured anybody knows an honest responsible sign broker to work together? In the Houston Texas area however with the technology today is easy to work together while being far away worked with brokers in the past so giving this a try at my own THANKS 🙏 Any information will be greatly appreciated 👍
I would say 50k is a solid bet to start a sign shop. 40k CAD is what I put into my business to get going with used equipment. (Large format printer, laminator and cutter). Computer and a sign program is a very important investment. All the random tools/equipment adds up like: knives, vinyl pick, rulers, measuring tape, squeegees, application fluid, cleaning supplies, spray bottles, paper towels, lint rags/tack cloths, garbage bags and cans, masking tape, deburring tool or hand file, small inkjet printer and paper for invoicing. Random stationary supplies like stapler, paper clips, elastics and other supplies to ship products(Cardboard boxes, pallet wrap)is a nominal amount but it accumulates.Table or 2 with cutting mats. Storage shelves, filing cabinet and racks for vinyl. Large format printer inks, cleaning cartridges, foam swabs, print media, over laminates, plotter vinyl and premask. Variety or substrates: Acrylic, Coroplast, Sintra, Dibond(ACM) and Aluminum. A way to cut the substrates ie: Panel saw or track saw for Aluminum. I missing a bunch of things but if you add up what's listed the cost would be in the 40-50k with very little amount of vinyl, over laminate and substrates.
