I liked how you took the time to got through each chord and its properties - just right for a class of youngsters at school:-). Thanks for this.

This is a fantastic lesson. I have watched many of your videos and love them, but always felt I had to search out some of the basics of jazz to watch them, so really glad to see you covering this ♥️

Thanks, all these years I’ve been dropping down from the chord, much quicker to think up.

Wow! this is a revelation to me, yet so simple. I've always spent ages on deciding how to voice chords to avoid that muddy sound but this is really effective - the best video I've seen this year, thanks :)

Rethinking my last comment while having coffee, always thought of drop 2 and 4 in band voicings. Ex 4 horns playing closed voicing Em7. If I raised the 2 and 4 th range or dynamic would change dramatically. Old way of dropping would keep dynamics between parts more evenly. Raising or lowering gives 2 different inversions of the same chord. Is the video geared more for piano comping? Either way they are both good tools. Especially for string parts.

Yes. That's why it is called drop 2+4. It is an arranging technique. The perspective we showed is more tuned to piano voicings

Thanks for the explanation. I'd like to add that some might hear 'open voicing' to be defined as a chord which is voiced beyond one octave. Closed voicing is the converse.
@mDecksMusic
@mDecksMusic 2 года назад
That's correct for 7th chords. Yes. Once you have 9, 11 or 13 chords, even closed voicings go above the octave.

@@mDecksMusic So a closed-voiced 13th chord isn't just every note in a scale mashed down within one octave? I always heard that a 2 is a 9 so long as the seventh is present and not whether the 9 is voiced above or below it. From what I'm reading, playing sequential thirds or seconds is a matter of 'spacing' as opposed to 'open or closed' which seems to refer exclusively to whether the voices are within one octave. Please feel free to state your opinion - I'm here to learn and not judge.

How does drop 2 work on an inversion or 9th chord? It looks like the 3 and 7th always go to the upper register?
