One of the trippiest & classic Atari Jaguar games was Jeff Minter’s (aka Llamasoft) Tempest 2000. Awesome game!

Back in the day I used RGB SCART on mine
@dennisplester1542
@dennisplester1542 3 года назад
I’m using RGB SCART on my Jag now through an OSSC. It sometimes takes a couple of restarts to get sync which can be a common problem with the Jag and an OSSC, but it looks great on my low latency 1440p gaming monitor. It supports the 5x multiplier mode and fills the screen nicely without stretching the horizontal resolution.
@lllebolll2439
@lllebolll2439 3 года назад
I'm somebody who actually sees mainly only the positive in every system. I also used a SCART cable back then, it had a perfect picture on my CRT. It contained a flatband cable similar to an IDE cable, guessable its easily possible to just solder it by yourself. The Jaguar has really many positive sides. I love the design, and also the design of the CD drive is really nice. I also love the gamepad, the slightly angled D-pad is a bit unprecise and the angle is not that ergonomical, but the idea with the keypad 1-0 * # and the plastic card to put on top is really cool. There is also the pro controller that maps some keypad buttons to reachable top buttons. Also the idea with the universally usable DSP processor was great, if there wouldn't be the mistakes and problems to properly program it, it could have had potential. I also like the EEPROM inside the games, if you plug in your old SNES or Game Boy cartridges from that time, all game saves are gone by now, but not here. Features like JagLink or the never released Jog controller for Tempest 2000 are interesting. To look at the games, considering that many ports use only the 68000 processor, which was never meant to be used for this kind of purpose, cause the game quality to look weak on the first view, but games that use the Jaguars full potential, if thats even possible, look really good. Alien vs Predator has a really good atmosphere and its really tough. On an NTSC Jaguar it runs quite smoothly, of course nothing smooth compared to PC titles that time, but the game design and the possibility to play all 3 parties was never anywhere before. Tempest 2000 maybe didn't show any hardware capabilities, but it is just the best version by far. I don't even know why, but the PC, Saturn and PS1 versions just don't have the same feeling. One of the best games ever, I cannot even tell why the Jaguar version is just genius and one of the best games of all time. My favourite game by far is Iron Soldier. Again I don't even know why, its just like that. It runs well and its just great, it has few textures, OK, but nevermind, the game was just very fun. I also enjoyed the game Club Drive that time. It has senseless gameplay, has really weak graphics and bad steering, the Gartners music just gave the fun to that actually aweful game. The Doom port is really good, but I never understood why the music only played at the "level complete" screen. Atmosphere? Or the use of the DSP for other calculations and no power left for the music? I have no idea. Fight For Life is also an example that even 3D fighters are possible for the Jaguar. Considering the budget, time pressure, the amount of programmers, the self developed engine and the non existing software-hardware optimization programmers, its a miracle that this game was even released. But saying that, the game was nothing compared to Sega or Namco fighters. Weak controls, but an interesting feature to learn moves during the progress and a complete 3D arena where you can fully zoom through in pause mode. The characters are actually interesting, but the game is weak overall. Kasumi Ninja, another striking out game, average character design, weak controls, average graphics, but an outstanding amount of gore, no game offered something like that at that time. Rayman of course, the legendary jump 'n run, ported or sequeled to every big system. But there are other exclusive games for the Jaguar, Bubsy, Atari Karts, White Men Can't Jump, Zero 5, Ultra Vortek, Trevor McFur I.C.G., Supercross 3D, World Tour Racing, Blue Lightning, Checkered Flag, Hover Strike, Attack Of The Mutant Penguins, Super Burnout, Ruiner Pinball, Breakout 2000, Power Drive Rally, Air Cars, Baldies, Missile Command 3D, I War, Hover Strike, Flip Out, Defender 2000, Cybermorph, who are all average or partly weak. Battlemorph and Highlander are also good Jaguar exclusive CD games. But the Jaguar has many great ports too, like Theme Park, Syndicate, Wolfenstein 3D, Raiden, NBA Jam TE, Brutal Sports Football, Pitfall, Myst, Pinball Fantasies, Space Ace, Canon Fodder, Primal Rage, Flashback, Brain Dead 13, Dragon The Bruce Lee Story, Double Dragon 5, Dragons Lair, The Humans. So don't just simply say the Jaguar is bad, if you haven't concidered the companies budget compared to Sony, Sega and Nintendo that time, also see how few people programmed this enjoyable games under what conditions. And even if the outstanding games are countable on one hand, you got lots of solid ports and lots of average exclusives too.

I REALLY wanted a Jaguar back in the day, having been a Lynx owner. Aliens looked so cool and the fact the system had Raiden, NBA Jam, and Doom really enticed me. Rayman looks so good too! By the time I found one for sale in my small town it was at a pawn shop for $200 and the system wasn't being supported anymore.

As someone whose played most of the retail jaguar library, a lot of the games are actually better than they're given credit for. Yes, there are a few bad games on the Jaguar, but every other console has those kinds of games, even the most beloved consoles like the PS2, NES, and Mega Drive have their fair share of awful games. Hell, one could make an ironic argument that those consoles have an even greater number of bad games than the Jaguar since they have much bigger libraries, and yet no one considers those bad consoles. The point is, just because the Jaguar has a small library with like 3 bad games doesn't mean the entire console is bad. That's a ridiculous statement.

Hey MLP, would you mind doing another short video using the OSSC (maybe SCART vs Component / Gen vs SNES adapters)? I know the thinking might be that 480p is good enough for these old games but I felt the image quality across the board was pretty poor. The HD Retrovision cables were obviously the best but I'd also like to see footage without the brightness switch activated. I want to know what the Jaguar looks like at its absolute best. I say all of this with the utmost respect. My taint just wasn't sufficiently tickled.

Can you explain why scart would be better than component? But also just gotta point out the retrotink 2x pro doesnt take scart so thats why I didnt show scart in this video, though I have tested scart at 2x on the ossc and there is no noticeable difference compared to component at 2x to me.
@HumbleBazooka
@HumbleBazooka 3 года назад
Hey there, Jag2GEN creator here. The image is a little soft but that's because the RetroTink 2X is only doubling the native 240p signal to 480p. Using Scart wouldn't change anything in this instance but you can connect a Genesis or SNES Scart to the respective adapter if you wanted to. To get the best picture out of the Jag using these adapters, you'd want to use an OSSC or RetroTink 5x as your scaler. I run mine through HD Retrovision cables into an OSSC with proper timings and the Jag looks incredibly sharp on my 65" OLED.
