I love it when relatively cheap lenses can offer up amazing results. Ok, sure wide open it's not super sharp, but I can already think of scenarios where I'd want that stylistic look for certain parts of documentaries I've worked on. You have my head spinning with ideas. It might finally be time for me to get into the vintage game 😮
You should just learn to disassemble and reassemble these lenses now. You love them so much. This is the natural progression. And take us along for the ride so we can learn with you.
Now the price of this lens will go up - I have a love hate relationship with these "reveal" videos, which cause vintage lenses to become more expensive.
they'll bump a bit, but i think ultimately most of them will stay fairly low. There's just too many good lenses out there and too few people who care about to work with manual to really drive prices. L series FD lenses are obviously the exception here as Canon owners can now safely and cleanly adapt their vintage FD to their RF mounts and that thin red line does wonders for perceived value. Also a lot of these lenses were so mass produced that supply will always kill "demand".
@@ReviewsforNerds Patience, one for the riight price will come up, these are limited in number (although loads of them around) so they key with any of this stuff is really to hunt for the best deal. I just saw one yesterday for $17, you can find one for $12 if it's attached to a camera. The price will fluctuate, it's too common a lens and too mass produced to really go up by all that much.
Depends where you live, guys. I'm from Germany and you can have most old GDR and USSR lenses pretty cheap around here. Excluding the rare gems of course, they are expensive globally. We shouldn't overestimate these videos. There is no shortage of vintage 50mm lenses and a lot of these - like the Domiplan - were mass produced and are not at all rare items these days. I'm gonna buy one of those tomorrow for 30€ and that's a good price. You will find a good deal, too. Just be patient and set yourself a limit and don't pay too much. :)
Here's the problem now: it seems scammers have popped up, listing their "copies" for $20, and either not shipping the item or shipping an entirely different item. Don't trust any of the bargain listings on eBay for this particular lens.
I owned this lens. It's the only lens I ever threw out. It was just too bad to keep. The MOG Oreston 50mm f1.8, also produced as the Pentacon 50mm f1.8, is a far better choice and also quite inexpensive.
That’s a massive topic that more subjective. You could do a whole essay on it and still be “wrong”. It’s meant to inspire and help people find it for themselves. Factually it’s based on the lens design used in cook cinema lenses. A whole second video could and should be done on it. But didn’t want that to compromise the core of this video which is a lens review. :) It’s like a quest, you are presented with a goal, it’s up to you to figure out how to do it ;) ;) ;)
That's a classic looking lens, and the bokeh is gorgeous and glittery. I find that halation fascinating as I enjoy that glowy highlight look of film. I also just learned the term "soap bubble bokeh!" I never knew there was a name for it.
I've SEEN it before but it wasn't until I got shots of my own did I really look into it more. It's funny how places are offering diffusion (pro mist) filters that do what this lens does naturally. Buy this very sharp lens and muddy it up because "reasons". Hope you're well mate!

Psst... I have one and it really does look the part, fantastic street lens. That Cooke triplet though! UGH, it's so good! Buy one before Petapixel reposts this; you can find them locally on Praktica cameras often enough...
I'd love to see what a "GOOD" photographer can actually get with this lens! I'm blown away by it! - UPDATE: Cooke LOOK is based on the foundation Cooke Triplet Optical Design this lens uses. I'm not saying you can get COOK CINEMA LENSES LOOK with this lens. It's an interpreted look without a clear definition of what exactly it is. Where it comes from is clear.
Discipline, Discipline, Discipline - no more 50mm lenses, Within 2 months, of starting on this vintage lens journey, I now have three - 50mm 1.9(Auto Chinon), 1.7(Pentax) and 1.4(Canon nFD), and I look back and wonder how did I get here. Who the heck is going to notice one bokeh over another. No one but the photographer, the audience does not see these things that we slave over - they just need a nice accurate image they are happy with. And all these tons of different focal lengths. I think for most people a limit should be set, maximum of 5 or 6 lenses 1. One 50 mm prime, any good lens that can go down to 1.8 or thereabouts is good enough. I must admit though I was taking photos of my wife at f1.4, and only after I realised how sharp the images were on the computer, did I check the camera/lens - incredible sharpness on the Canon at its maximum aperture f/1.4 phenomenal. 2. One 24 or 28 mm prime, from f 2.8 3. One 85mm or 135mm prime 4. One zoom but in truth, the weight of vintage zooms and wanting to remain discreet in my street photography, I never take out the zooms, just do everything with a 50mm prime on an APSC sensor, and have learnt to zoom with my feet. ok if you have to zoom, get a 70 to something higher and live with that. This should be more than enough for most people... 5. One for macro if none of the other lenses can do a good enough macro, and if macro is one of your things you shoot. Too many youtube videos, too many temptations - no more vintage lens purchases - resistance is not futile.
@@okay1904 That's all nice and practical (and it does make sense), but I don't create images for others to like. I try to create images I like. I'm pleased if others like them too, but I can't try to capture an image using someone else's eyes. And in all honesty, it depends who's giving the feedback too, you can't value everyone's opinion equally. But in the end what I think matters the most. Not because I'm a great (or even good photographer), but because it's my (attempt at) art. For example, I don't like Canon FD 50mm 1.4 bokeh in some situations and I do notice the difference. In such situations I'd prefer another lens, even if less sharp. Having choice is only a plus.
The soviet lenses are well known for their flares! People try to throw crud at them for "no quality control" but those lenses still hold up very well today. Love my soviet lenses! Which one is the one you have? Now i'm all curious :)
Thanks mate, it might be the fall out from when we cut documentaries. You almost have to edit them with the general public in mind, hook them in and keep them there. That's a totally different world of story telling for sure, but having doing it for so long it might be rubbing off on these. Glad you're enjoying them.

@@MarkHoltze just had a quick play, I see what you mean about the 'soap bubble' bokeh they look great 👍 my aperture blades seem ok on this copy hopefully they'll stay that way. Btw I've seen prices over here as low as £15 going upto over £100! Seems there's quite a few copies out there.
I bought my first in February of this year, only because it was attached to an Exa 500 I liked the look of. Now I have eleven Exa's and Exakta's of different models they are beautiful to behold, the older they get the more I like them, only six of these are fitted with the Meyer Optic Gorliz, all of them specific to EXA and EXAKTA cameras.
Fantastic review, picked up 3 of these as a result (I got 3 cameras and sometimes like the uniformity when I use all 3 at once with certain multicam shoots). I've been shooting ALMOST exclusively with vintage lenses. Found them to be amazing to learn and shoot with. AF on any system has not just been my thing. Thank you for your excellent review!

@@maikibitz well hopefully 2021 gives you some perks mate. We're all doing as well as we can over here. 2k ya, 2 years ago, I think it's doubled every year. Kind of zeroed in on the format of what I want the lens "reviews" to be but ya some people can hit 3 million in the amount of time it's taken me to get to 30k so honestly I try not to let that be the driving force in anything I do here. Numbers don't validate me, the impact is a good thing, seeing comments on how i've helped people in the same way that these lenses "helped me". I could probably put out more if i compromised on certain things ,but then i wouldn't be doing it for the right reasons i think.

I did. I really like it. Cooke triplet, needs some suntan lotion. when you have the background separated and with an anamorphic, just has a look to it.
There many mixed reviews on this lens. I have one which is very good as well and can make pictures with lots of 3D pop. If you buy this lens, make sure that it has never been taken apart and that the aperture mechanism works. These are two things to watch for. This lens, when taken apart (usually to repair the aperture mechanism), will often be reassembled with a de centered rear element. It is very critical for this rear element to be perfectly centered. Many reviews of this lens are based on lenses that have a poorly centered rear element.
I picked up a pre-Pentax Takumar earlier this year (Asahi 58mm f/2.4, circa 1955), their first lens optimised for colour, and one of the last designed without use of a computer. I needed it to fill a gap in my focal length range that I was sorely missing since my grandfather's 1965-ish SLR with it's Mamiya-built 58mm f/1.7 crapped out, and since modern 58mm lenses are both rare and very expensive, I opted to go for a probably indestructable and 100% mechanical solution. The Tak is a preset lens with no automation whatsoever, so aperture actuation is controlled with a third ring, meaning there are likely fewer components to experience wear, and no fast actions to cause wear. It's older than my parents, and will probably outlast me if I take care of it. Though it won't win any image quality tests, it's in good shape, and it provides an experience no modern lens can match. The biggest technical benefit compared to modern lenses is that it (and the previously mentioned Mamiya) contains a ridiculously high number of aperture blades for the price. I couldn't get an exact count, but it's something around 12-14, so bokeh at any aperture is perfectly round. It's especially impressive considering just how tiny the lens is, and probably highly inefficient considering only a decade later similar lenses would be produced with only 5-6 blades. It uses a Heliar optical design, a variation on the Cooke triplet, and normally reserved for longer and slower lenses. That your Meyer Optik opts for a simple triplet past the mid-60's surprised me, but I guess it's an efficient design. Still, in every aspect my Tak is totally unique, so it'll have a place in my regular setup for hopefully as long as I live, and as long it lives I'll probably never replace it.
Can't go wrong with the Tak no doubt. That is impressive about the number of blades for the small lens. I noticed that with the Jena, 58mm, so many blades.

I found one in the attic attached to an old zenit camera, gave a good clean to it and now it shines again. Not the most impressive vintage but it defintely has its place in any collection. If you like this lens, get the Oreston 1.8!
Great video Mark. The Meyer Optik line is pretty expansive. Never knew. You could almost start a channel just on the number of lenses available apart from the 50mm f 2.8. Hope you get to show a few more in the line up. Make some great viewing.
Another masterpiece from you Mark!! Loved it! The look of this lense is really unique and amazing. Binging your videos has a slight risk at buying all these vintage lenses 😅😆 But for now I will focus on using my fathers FD 50mm F1.4, which he bought in the 80s. Will try to learn as much as possible through this lens regarding photography. For videos I currently have to use an AF lens. @@MarkHoltze 100%, I have a canon M50 and was looking for cheaper alternatives to be more creative and record. After watching several of your videos I found someone locally on FB who had a ton of stuff from her late husband. The photos they've been capturing are insanely better then the smartphones and stock lenses at a fraction of the cost.
Excellent review of......not the lens but your inception of your vintage experience. Someone much older left you something special that would have been missed if you were close minded and afraid. But here you are, knee deep in modern digital and connecting the values of the old with the new. My favorite free-be that got me into this was my Mamiya 50 2.0. Yellowing radioactive goodness. I shoot all my professional interviews with this free lens because it’s detail is magical and natural.

Mark that lens looks really good, I have just ordered a 16m projector lens, got knows how i am going to mount it, A mir 1 35mm and a Helios 35mm i think.... Because of you my lens collection is growing. One of the channels I would recommend for vintage lenses is zenography the guy really good knowledge of vintage lenses
I really really like your videos. And it is easy to explain why: It's this combination of facts, presentation, your ability to really show that you do not only tell stories. And it's always a pleasure to watch. Sound, grading, footage - it just works. Regarding this lens and basically lenses in general: What is the basic rule when you create a video or film: It's the joy you great for the viewer. And yes - modern lenses can be crazy good, sharp with perfect colors. But what happens to the footage: You edit it, try to make it more pleasing - you try to create a piece of art and completely change the esthetics of it. So many times it makes more sense to use old glass, with unique characteristics and great something that is impossible to emulate in post. So you start with painting pictures with light and then add a little something here in there. And the results can be so good. :) I also have this lens. I already have it for a long time.And I like it ... but I nearly forgot about it. So after your video, I simply have to use it again. So ... thanks for sharing your thoughts and this video. I apologize for butchering the word Gorlitz GURLITZ i should have put that accent on it lol. Agree with all your points mate and definitely is a place for a very "SHARP CLEAN" image, not everything requires it though. Not everyone wants real life represented on screen, we live in real life and part of it is escapism. Applying digital effects to what you can capture on camera is also not always the best solution. This is coming from a guy who edits, but i've always appreciated in camera effects over post ones. Domino Harvey film wasn't that great, but I LOVED what Tony Scott did with double exposures and film grading to add some style to that film. Finding out they did that all in camera blew me away back when I first watched it. Thanks for stopping by and adding your 2 cents mate. It's greatly appreciated given your professional standard. So much of this space has become about specs and tech and I feel the art form is being lost a bit.

Soap bubble bokeh usually happens one of two ways - A ring of smutz on the lens edge (Generally dust) or the edges of the glass elements are not blacked properly. You can get Soap bubbles on a Helios if you really want. I get similar with my Tessar because all the black on the element edges is gone.
@@MarkHoltze Don't empirically take my word at this however - It's possible that there are some lens configurations that won't have this effect, optical engineering is difficult at the best of times. The Myer is very pronounced compared to these other examples - my Helios will reliably do the soap bubbles with cooler coloured light sources, but struggles to reproduce the effect with warm LED lights. the Tessar borders on the Myers performance, but the ring portion of the bokeh bubble is less pronounced. On the flipside, my Daguerreotype 65mm f2 has a wild, vibrant, rainbow soap bubble Bokeh that borders on uncontrollable. As an aside and a hint for a possible new video though; If you want a really weird bokeh/Light reflection defect in a lens, try finding a Cosinon 55mm 1.4, specifically the one with the flat back element. It creates circles of light off of light sources that circle around the centre of frame, absolutely weird and wonderful. Lens is also pretty sharp, so that's a bonus.
@@alaricpaley6865 I never empiricially take any word for it mate don't worry ;). It's given me a string to follow and do some testing. I'm aware things especially with these lenses weren't meant with the most strict assembly measures so things could vary from lens to lens. I really appreciate you passing on the info mate! Thank you!
Thanks Rich. It works nice as it zero's in on the location of interest so makes that super tight water shot not quite so claustrophobic. Notice at the end I used the "pull back" version as we leave the location. It's a simple but very effective strategy.
great inspiring video! I'm catched by the very pictorial and flat results of this lens. I especially enjoyed the part of the video about "why" shooting with vintage lenses... the control of chromatic aberrations can be due to the almost symmetrical design of the lens, where an aberration introduced by the front block is almost completely compensated by the (almost symmetrically specular) rear element. that's the same principle behind the Planar design
Love the science behind the designs, the simplicity is just fantastic as well. I love that flat look, it's very cool and would make a great lens with some really good set design for a hyper realistic perspective in a narrative film. Form factor is a little annoying to shoot with, but can easily work with it given what it's capable of.
This lens is 1977-78,i bouhgt it with my first Practica. I threw it away after a month,but i use it today on my Sony. Great lens for womans in some age. :)

I didn't know much about this lens but it seems to be a glass that could be great to experiment with (an experimental fashion movie could be the right kind of project, for example). I personally like to watch 'out-of-radar' lenses/gear reviews and I hope to see more content like this in the future (maybe some Yashica-related stuff?). Good work.
I have one Yashica 50 1.8 but the aperture won't move on it. Still trying to figure it out, but would be nice to compare that to the CZ 50 1.7 since they were such closely related cousins (legally anyway).
Ok so, turns out, i have this lens by pure coincidence on my shelf, its rebranded as a Pentaflex 50mm f2.8 and was on a "porst reflex cx 4" also a rebranded camera, wow, never bothered to even test that one on my camera, but now i have to !!!
Honestly it was like a punch in the face lol.....i don't think i would have appreciated it 3 years ago though, I needed to walk before run when dealing with vintage.
Fun video, and nice shots! I have always liked Meyer Optik lenses, and their Pentacon incarnations. And while they aren’t the finest cameras ever made........ I also have a soft spot for Praktica/Pentacon cameras. My several Pentacon Super TL’s may be average cameras, but they make me happy when I use them! Seems like you enjoy using your simple Domiplan........ I like mine, too
I've gotten quite complicated in the vintage shooting ,using fully re-housed soviet lenses as cinema lenses these days, but it's really great to be able to go back to what i fell in love with these lenses.
Beautiful. Im cuban. Love bricolage too. And I love your passion for it. I do my best according my limitatoons country, but i can find vintage lenses like russians Pentax and carl zeiss too. I have a flektogon 20mm f4 that have an impressive near focus 0.8m. And the boqueh is nervous too like this meyer. Congrats keep doing this job. And sorry about my english.
Very much enjoyed the video. I have three Domiplan versions in my Exakta collection. I don't use them often. Too many other great lenses and I seem to go and grab my Pancolar first and a Tessar second. But the Domiplans are fun. Got me thinking that tomorrow I will pull one out and take some shots.
Always love your video's. I held off from buying this lens because of the bad reviews I've seen before, but now it might pick it up if I ever see it for a good price.
Technically it might be a little off for some, really depends on the condition and sensibility of the photographer I think. I was pretty smitten by it and i've tested quite a few of these lenses.
@@MarkHoltze Update: I just got this lens for free today. I'm surprised by its size and how smooth the focusring still is. I don't expect wonders of it, but it might be a fun lens to play with in the coming weeks.
Great video as usual! I've seen this at auction sites plenty of times but never got hold of one. Have the Industar-50-2 50mm F3.5 though, and I guess it is something in the same ballpark (different optical formula though).
Industrar, one of those soviet relics I haven't ever seen around these parts. I'll def have to go to ebay for those not sure we're going to be having any of our local vintage camera pop up shops for awhile unfortunately. Thanks Thomas!
Awesome video, love the bokeh and comparisons/split screen edits. That drone shot helped stitch together a nice scene transition and the funny Jim Carrey like ending was a nice wrap to this video. Inspiring me to do some more lens comparison videos!
It's ALL in the HIPS Evan ;) jk little Happy Gilmore reference there. I rarely pull out a drone, but when I do it's for an establishing beat, I prefer the push in or pull out to zero in on my "location". The Jim thing was in all honesty excitement for wrapping up the on camera thing. Especially that one where I was using a full manual lens to shoot the on camera stuff....the circle of vintage shooting is now COMPLETE....another star wars reference, wth is wrong with me lol. You referenced the Takumar for close focus comparison, but overall do you think you like this better? I’m mad in love with my Takumar. Great video, too. Love this stuff!
The Takumar I think is a better lens overall. It's more robust, more versatile and sharper wide open and by F/2.8 on the Takumar you're not getting the optical issues you get with most lenses that are "wide open". I did find the lack of being able to get too close on the Meyer to be a bit of a pain. Close focus is so handy, for me at least.
Definitely! Does the min focusing distance change on a different size sensor? I know the lens is now 2.2 ish times the focal length, but does that impact the min focusing at all?

Back in the 70s I had an EXA 500 with the Domiplan lens. I remember a photographic magazine at the time which ran the usual lens tests. Low down on the performance charts, there was a curve showing the Domiplan, described as the worst lens they had ever tested.
testing a lens with charts is one thing, using it in the field is something else. One is a scientific observation, the other is an artistic form of expression. I mean if I were to really get into it, I'd have to know who conducted the experiments, what sort of credentials did they have? There's definitely a time and a place for those tests, but for the most part, I think they're more limiting than anything else.
@@MarkHoltze . It was a long time ago, I think the measurement was LPM but I could be wrong. Unfortunately I don't think I have still got any of the photos I took with my Exa and Domiplan, though I don't remember them lacking in adequate sharpness, not that I was particularly critical on that count. I remember the days when the Amateur Photographer lens tests were done by photographing a ship across the river from their offices at various apertures, until they realised that atmospheric conditions had more effect than the quality of the lens. I recently acquired a 1935 Voigtlander Avus 6x9 with an uncoated Skopar lens plus a roll film back, with the idea of emulating the look of vintage postcards, something I've always liked. Sadly the only film I've had chance to put through it was a disaster, lots of fogging and strange completely blocked denser shadows. The advent of the mirrorless camera with readily available adapters have certainly encouraged many to try out the vast range of inexpensive lenses. I suspect RU-vidrs such as your good self have caused many a lens collection to rapidly expand. :-)
@@grahvis lol, probably had some influencer on it, but I think for the most part it's still VERY niche. Part of what got me into this was seeing people commenting on wanting a cheaper option to that $4000 lens some RU-vidr sponsored by canon got for free. Comments by people wishing they could afford that lens, but can't so can't improve their photography. The millions of people who follow those you tubers don't connect with this stuff I don't think simply because I think they want the lifestyle of the photographer they see displayed on youtube and not an actual love or adoration for the craft itself. With these lenses you can't be good quick and even harder is to be a good photographer. I'm in no way even a decent photographer, I'm more suited for videography/cinematography, but as a stills guy I'm horrible. I enjoy it, it's a hobby of mine, but more talented people can do much more with these babies :) Mirrorless are definitely the game changer although I was always more interested in these as a video lens more than anything lol.
@@grahvis I recall that as well, it definitely was a Domniplan as the bottom line on the graph. The Contax 50mm F1.7 was the top line of the graph. I recall it was a test of resolution. It was one of the UK photo magazines, I do not remember which one though. I seem to recall the Domniplan was on a dixons branded camera.
Ok, so i spent 45 minutes trying different lenses, walking back and forth, with out of focus Christmas lights in my viewfinder, that's normal right ! My Domiplan 50 and Soligor 28 f2,8 "Wide auto" are clear winners in category, soapy bokeh bubbles. It almost seams that a good lens, which render super sharp images, tend to have smooth creamy Bokeh. Hi Stringer! Respect to the name by the way, the Wire is an awesome series. Music is all from Epidemic Sound, they have LOTS of music, a bit tricky to find the tracks that I like, but that's the case with all music libraries. The best part is the mixed out stems so I can drop the vocals etc if I want.
