You can get the death certificate from the funeral home or other services through the state, vital statistics, or paid services. Make sure you know whether or not you need the long-form, short-form, or both versions of the death certificate for your probate process.

Anne: If your loved one passes away, you usually order the death certificate at the funeral home. Remember, there are two types of death certificates, the long-form, and the short-form. The long-form has a cause of death and is required for any insurance policies and, perhaps, retirement accounts. And the short-form, which is required for the court, and most banks, or other people who need a death certificate. If you can’t get it that way, there are services through the state, through vital statistics, or paid services that will go and get a death certificate for you. However, if you are not related to the decedent, you probably will not be able to get a long-form, only a short-form.
