It might sound morbid but I love it when I can find a death certificate for a family member. You're right about there being so much information on them. The cause of death can be interesting as well by using terms for illnesses that aren't used anymore such as dropsy, Bright's disease or consumption.

I knew that my great-aunt, whom my mother was named after, had died young. I finally found her death certificate and was shocked to see "uremic seizure" as her cause of death. Having been in the medical field I knew that uremic had to do with kidneys but had never heard of this. I emailed someone in the kidney foundation and she kindly explained this to me. My great-aunt was only fourteen, so I'm assuming she had some congenital kidney issues. No one else in the family ever had this issue. Sadly, her father died in a tragic work accident only three months later.

It's incredible how much information is in a death certificate. Didn't have a clue until my husband died.

Texas, California and VitaCheck are all expensive. Don't forget the cemetery sexton! There is often gold there.

I have an ancestor in Cayuga County New York that I can't find a birth record for although I did find his marriage record and War of 1812 Pension files

May not have had one if he served in the War of 1812. They weren’t a government thing then usually (differed by time and place). Sometimes marriage or death or other records are all we have.

How do you get one if you're not married? My girlfriend and I are not married. We have life insurance on each other

I’m not sure the laws in your state. They vary across the country. But the executor of any estate can obtain a death certificate.

Hi, need to correct you. You stated certificates starts in 1910 to 1920 generally. This is incorrect, especially in the northeast. NY state started in 1880. Over the next 10 years some places recorded diligently, others not so much. But by the 1890s they were pretty standard lay recorded. Other states in Which New England were earlier than the 1910s. In NY, indexes are online, so you need to write to the state or the township or city to obtain the old certificates.

True! Massachusetts keep early records too. But further west it was different. Thanks for adding that information about New York. FYI NY state is an ABSOLUTE pain to get those records. It’s usually best to contact the townships if you know them.
