Great set of tripods mate, the TC9 looks robust as & also love the RRS ballhead. The build quality of that is exceptional, could easily support my brick ( 1DX🤣) as well. Glad you showed the pgytech thingo, I had been considering getting that for a while, looks awesome. P.s stop having stiff balls , I mean ballheads, the center column should be like that🤣

Hi Peter, great job. That short lever between the legs on the iFootage TC9, is your levelling base,,, for levelling the top of the tropod without necessarily having to adjust the legs when setting up on uneven ground. Very handy especially when shooting pano's. Enjoy your new kit.

I generally hate using tripods. I have about 4, but gave up on most of them because they are either not stable enough, or I just get frustrated with the 'dance' you have to do with legs. I ended up with a Sirui W2204 tripod that is working height without center column raised (but packs down to fit in a carry-on when travelling), and then I found the FlexShooter Mini tripod head... which is kind of like both a gimbal and a ball head. I love it because you the ball means you don't have to do the dance with the legs. It is definitely not the best for a landscape photographer... but amazing for people that do a mix of landscape, sports, and wildlife.

Yeah, I’ve done a few shoots recently without a tripod, and in some ways it’s easier, simpler, and more enjoyable. I’ll be doing more, for sure.

I agree, if you had the TC6, you may as well go the T9. This video helped me and I just ordered a TC7 as my first tripod, should be perfectly eye level for me once I add the my gimble head, I don't think I would utilize the legs if they were any bigger.
@peterfritzphoto

Great choice, Kurtis. I think the TC7 is the sweet spot. My TC9 is such a beast, I suspect I’ll have it forever. If I was walking more than a couple of miles, though, I think it would become very tiresome very quickly.

I have the TC9. And had a TC7 but sent it back. The issue I have with it is the bubble level for the 75mm bowl leveling head is on top of the head not off the side of it. Once you put a Ball, Pano, Gimbal head on it. They better have a bubble level too or you have no way to level the head. Because Ifootage put the bubble underneath the head when it's mounted. Bad design that could easily be fixed by a different ball head. I went to LeoFoto tripods. Their halfballs have the bubble level off to the side. I also now have a LeoFoto 75mm half ball with side bubble level and bottom mount on my Ifootage TC9. As it fits and I now can balance the ball after I mount it with a head. The Quick screw mount for the Ifootage halfball won't work on Leofoto. Ifootage requires a much longer screw. I also now have extra 75mm Leofoto Halfball mounts. I leave my different heads mounted to the half balls. This way I just grab the head I want and change it in the tripod and don't have to screw and unscrew it to the head. I also can swap which tripod I want to bring easily. Grab a mounted Head and ball. And grab the tripod I want. Off I go.
@peterfritzphoto
@peterfritzphoto 2 года назад
Yes, I’ve notice a number of tripods’ bubble levels are all but useless. For my kind of photography, I rarely use a bubble level - preferring instead to use my eye, then refine through the viewfinder. Thanks for your insights. 👍

Random question but do you bring those big tripods separately with you on a plane? With your carry baggage I mean. I’m stuck on this issue whether I need to find a tripod small enough to fit in my suitcase or whether I can just bring it under my arm with me on the plane if that’s allowed.
@peterfritzphoto
@peterfritzphoto 4 месяца назад
I never take a large tripod on a plane, and I very much doubt you can walk on a plane with one under your arm. I use a travel tripod like the Peak Design, iFootage TC3B, or Freewell Real Travel Tripod (just reviewed last week), and place them inside my my carry-on bag.

This is an area I've stuggled with for my photography over the years, tripods, gone through a handful of monopods and tripds. One or two gorillapods. I find that I never really get completely satisfied. For now I'm using a Sirui carbon travel tripod that is both sturdy and actually smaller than the Peak design, although not quite as slim as the peak design one. It's small enough to stick into the sidepocket of my Peak design backpack and light enought to bring with me most of the time. I find my laziness prevents me from setting it up most of the time unless I need to for long exposures, I should probably use it more than I do. Thanks for showing your tripods, I believe the tripod companies actually thrives on us photographers buying and trying all their "imperfect" products. I find that most photographers overbought and have a handful of tripods in their closets, at least that's the story that the local classified ads tell.
@peterfritzphoto
@peterfritzphoto 2 года назад
I think that story is an accurate one. It’s taken me years to figure out what I really need/want, and it’s still not perfect. Same with heads. I love the accuracy of a geared head, but hate having three seperate controls. Ball heads are simple, but they flop about. Ugh. Thx for watching, Magnus. 😄
@RauriBarron
@RauriBarron 2 года назад
“big bastard ball head” 😂 does look like it, the TC7 / TC9 were on my short list, the TC7 was my second choice but ended up getting the Benro as I’m used to twist locks and also got a deal on it 😆 Still think the iFootage is better for that bowl head and the spiked/rubber feet, way easier than swapping the feet out each time. Nice video mate.
@peterfritzphoto
@peterfritzphoto 2 года назад
Yeah, I’ve had a couple of twist lock tripods, but I tended to tighten them too hard. At least with lever locks, I can’t. I love that hilltop location - I might have to make it my outdoor product review studio! 😄👍
