Hello all. Today I look in more detail at the images from my latest landscape photography video from Scotland. I give the photos a good going over, discussing what I like and what I don't like. I also briefly talk about a different tripod which I was using. It was good... almost perfect, but it had one critical flaw. Enjoy.

Hi Thomas, I just took possession of the TC7 today on your advice. WOOOOW What a tripod! About 6 months ago i bought Adam Gibbs’s Sunway Photo geared head. Man what a combo! Quick leveling with micro fine adjustment. I couldn’t be happier. Thanks for telling us about this great tripod. Cheers

I just got a new tripod and head, and this video made me think of it instantly, because the whole deal with it is how easy it is to level it and then keep it level. The company's called Uniqball, and their thing is a ball head where first you level your camera using a bigger ball, and then you lock that ball down, and after that you can unlock a smaller ball which will only allow you to rotate along two of the three axes, so you can pan and tilt as much as you like but the camera will stay perfectly level. The tripod itself also has a leveling base built in, but that's a bit overkill when the head already has that feature. So if you're interested, check out the Uniqball tripod heads! All of it is also incredibly well built and sturdy, but also a bit pricey.

If you are looking for leveling heads. Look at Uniqball. Ball in ball leveling head that fits normal tripods. As a plus for me is that the ball works as a pan tilt and it has no grease so it won't bind in cold temps, I have tested it in -25C. I have a version with a pano plate on top this axis has grease though.

I have to say that first image was my favourite. I love the pink colour on the mountain which is reflected softly into the water, beautifully smoothed out with the long exposure. That pink also contrasted perfectly with the ice blue of the water with those rocks and their frosting, just finishing it off. But it is, as always, subjective and very much a personal choice

The arca swiss p0 head has the pano adjustment ABOVE the ball, so then you don't need to level the tripod. And the spirit level is in the right place.

Inverted ballhead is a clever trick that not too many people figure out. You lock that ball and pan on the base, which is now the top. Still very hard to get perfect level as you rotate.

you know it's easier to photoshop out things on the edge of the image if you undo the crop and then try to clone out the bush. it helps photoshop to have the extra pixels to the left of the bush.

I am looking forward to your next video as I was parked next to you that morning. I went into the valley and with the freezing temps and moisture by the river my lens froze. So whilst trying to defrost it with hand warmers, I glanced up and through the most saw the alpine glow peeking out at the top. I thought to myself, get fitter Di cause you should be up there! Hint, join the crowd of photographers using MVH500AH fluid heads for photography. Bubble level on the head allows for fast leveling, weight is very similar to a beefy ball head. Perfect panos once leveled, and your shots never go out of level. L bracket required for portrait orientation, but it's an awesome way to go.

Love ya man. Im revisiting this video because I find myself needing a new travel tripod and you are the master. But I have to ask why in the world you found fault with the bubble level on the tripod instead of on the mount. I thought the idea of the large ball adjustment was to settle your rig perfectly with an imperfect tripod setup, ie uneven ground. You also have a bubble level on your mount. Isn't that the one that matters? For panos, get yourself a pano Arca clamp mount that swivels. Swivel the camera at the clamp instead of at the Ballheads base. Walla! Its magic!

Looks much better in color than in black and white. When you showed the first picture from that landscape I was saying to myself "Why black and white? I'm sure there were beautiful blues and reds present in that scene that enhance an otherwise relatively bland snowy scenery"... good the other scene had that.

I had to chuckle listening to your self critique, Tom. I do the same thing. I convince myself that one image is better than the other, and you know what? 9 times out of 10 the image I'm not fond of is the one people prefer. I believe this might be the case here. I LOVE the first image you critiqued. I love the colors, the water is perfect and the framing, while not perfectly symmetrical is very well done. The second one, as nice as it is just doesn't "pop" out at me the way the first one does. It just doesn't have enough elements. That being said, you are a minimalist photographer and you reap most of your joy from simple compositions rather than messy ones, so naturally the second image makes you smile. I think most of us struggle with that. :-)

Hi Thomas, nice video from a familiar part of the world :) To solve the issue with the bubble level and a full size tripod head, you can get something like the Sunwayphoto LP-76. It's basically a thin plate with an integrated bubble level that goes between the base and the tripod head - it's quite wide so the level will be visible even with a full size head..

i like your image. i understand about your concerns of the composition and busy middleground. But the light and colors are sooo beautiful so i do not care that the islands edge is outside of format… And Pano: i hope that the new Fuji GFX100s will let the price of the GFX50S drop. I don't understand why you didn't crop out the offending bush. I remember hollering at the TV "move to the left! Zoom!" when you were working that composition. What a neat photo but the edges need help that may be provided by our old buddy Croppy. Maybe an 8x10? I'm very curious about that T7 and the diameter. I contacted iFootage to get the dimension from the threads to the level.

Thomas, nice video. It's good to critique your own work. Makes you a better photographer. I'm constantly nit-picking my own photo. One question. Have you used the great tool in Lightroom called CROP? Cheers from across the pond.

I like David Moore's question on the composition. My other thought on the messy foreground, since it is in shadow, could you darken it a little more to lower the distraction of it. I think the better idea for me, would be to crop it a bit. I do like the pano version with the mix of colors as my favorite of the shots you showed today.
@nicolasbertin8552

I much prefer the b&w to the pano, but that's also because I love b&w on mountains. The pano, I don't know it's a bit empty. It's very very hard to do a balanced pano in my opinion, even photographers I respect immensely are a bit hit and miss with the panos. But it's also a format that works better when printed large, so it's more immersive. It's hard to judge on my TV...

On the second image, the "Messy" foreground gives it a feeling of harshness. Like a lace of danger and challenges. It conveys feeling, at least to my eye. If there had been lots of deep blankets of snow, it would have felt soft, and almost inviting. Yet the harshness is a little more of the reality of the location. Once again, just my opinion. Beautiful work!

I find your thought process on the Panorama fascinating - largely because (having seen the image with the distracting boulder in it) I would have definitely kept that boulder there! When it was present it provided a bit more anchoring and balance to the bottom half of the image, and helped draw your eye into the frame. With it gone, I feel the whole of the bottom of the image is slightly messy with no structural elements. Just as well photography is subjective!! ;)

I have been using a SunwayFoto leveling base between tripod and head. The position of the bubble level is adjustable, it's never obscured. I lost that tripod (rumour has it in police custody), and I've been trying a Manfrotto 056 head. It's very easy to level properly, but a bit overwhelmed by my impressively large tripod. Rather than a levelling base, there are rotators. They sit atop the head to provide a panning platform. I prefer the levelling base because tilting the head up or down for an additional layer doesn't affect the plane of rotation.

Arca swiss P0 ballhead is great for panos. It's an upside down design meaning that you don't need to level your tripod legs or have a leveling base. @johnsmith1474

A composition question - What was your reason for including the bottom 15 to 20% of the panno, given that (as you say) it's a bit messy? Did you feel it was necessary in order to give more balance to the sky?

And a nod to you, it is to balance the image that the messy foreground got to stay, which is why the picture can be authoritatively said to be relatively weak. I think the best for me was the B+W image, the light took your eyes straight to the trees. :) A few companies do the tripods with levelling bases now. I know gitzo and feisol do, tbh i wish i had bought one for my feisol when i bought the tripod. The feisol one has a little arm that sticks out with the level on, so using it and a full sized head isn't an issue. ;)

If you wanted to make leveling easier for panos, get a "discus" rotator that accepts an arca swiss plate on the bottom. Then, you just click this in to the top of your regular ball head clamp and use the ball to get things level. Then boom, you have a perfectly level platform to make the pano.

Thanks for the info on the Ifootage TC7. Got one and checked it out. Great build but I really wanted bigger leg sections to be able to use with a medium format film camera and my large Ball head. Then I saw they were releasing a TC9 that had larger leg sections. Ordered it right away and waiting on it now. Loved everything about the TC7 so the TC9 should be perfect. Ok. Got the TC9. Put my ball head on it. It's perfect. Except one major issue. I can't see the bubble level. Why in the hell did they put it on the plate where it will be under any head. A fast release of the bowl head is worthless without being able to level it. Which kills a huge benefit of the bowl head and puts me back to tripods with a head that is levelable. I mean i use old ones that do this. But I don't want a new one with bad design elements.

You might wanna look at 3 LEGGED THING EQUINOX AIRHED 360 BALLHEAD, that ballhead has two rotations parts if you call it that, one under the ball and one just under the plate mounting, so you can rotate the camera without rotating the ball part if that makes sense. Have one my self, love it :)

I like the first image in a number of ways, but RU-vid doesn't facilitate a detailed reply. Please have a squint at your email, but the decision is always yours, you're the photographer. Looking forward to more from Scotland!

How important do you feel is a separate dedicated monitor for editing or printing quality ?

You should get a flash hot shoe bubble level, so you don’t need the bubble level on your tripod ;)

You can't see the bubble level on the leveling base due to the overhang of your tripod head. I had the same problem but solved it by putting a 3/4" spacer between the tripod base and the ball head. The spacer weighs in at 3 oz and only cost $8. Here is a link to the spacer I used: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DYO2V0G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
