The reason the grafts clot is the clot that develops at the end of the saline line where it goes to the blood. When the treatment ends the clot is pushed into the patients graft . Clots really like grafts and are hard to dissolve and as a patient you should ask the tech or nurse to make sure that clot is pushed to the line where filter will catch the clot and not go into your arm . It is important to watch and remind that the tech or nurse does it every time because it is your life on the line. God bless

Hi Lindsay. I watched all your videos.Very helpful for novice dialysis nurses like me. Can you please make a video on cannulation using ultrasound. That would be great! Appreciate your efforts.

Thank you so, sooo much for this video !!! I wasn’t able to understand why some patients who have Grafts, we cannulated them as normal. With arterial on the bottom and venous on top. But then others , we would cannulate them opposite, with the arterial on top and venous on bottom. Now I understand why! It depends on the placement of the graft. This visual helped so much! Is there any way you can describe the difference between a “thumb pull” method and a “pinky pull” method? Along with why we would need to use these methods ? Thanks so much !

Pls continue making videos it is so helpful for those who are new to dialysis. My mom is a HD patient. What is better, fistula or permanent neck insertion catether? Thanks
@dialysisnurselindsey
@dialysisnurselindsey 2 года назад
Fistula for sure. After having a catheter for 90 days the risk for a serious blood infection goes way up. These infections usually require hospitalizations and are a big deal. Thanks for reaching out! 😃

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You are excellent ❤️ Btw, can you give me more tips on how to cannulate a graft? Newer grafts give no feelings of a "click" sensation like th old graft😀

You are welcome! 💯 agree with new grafts. I like to use an ultrasound with new grafts, gives me a better visual. Do u have an ultrasound at ur clinic? And assess and watch others cannulating the same graft helps me learn the graft

I got a Bovine graft instead of a fistula because my nephrologist felt I needed to begin treatment asap, and didn’t want to place a catheter in me.

Hello all, How long does one wait to remove gauze from Cannulation holes over the graft? Can keeping the gauze that puts pressure on the hole stay until the next treatment? How does one prevent clots in a graft after a six hour treatment? Thanks !
@dialysisnurselindsey
@dialysisnurselindsey 6 месяцев назад
Recommend taking the gauze off the next day or sooner, depending on the person. If there is bleeding at home, notify your dialysis team. Keeping follow up appointments for ur graft will help prevent clotting too. Thank u!

I made an appointment with the surgeon who placed my av graft and assured me in fact it was an av graft. The people from dialisys place were treating in like a fistula..always a tight tourniquet and two clamp on it. I always would bleed and got 15 stenz in my graft...i think this was gross negligence..can i contact the state and make a complain?

This takes practice. If established patient, they will be able to help you too. You are not the only one that struggles with this, it is common. Your coworkers will help you too. I'll work on another video with a fake arm that has a graft to help you with this :)
