Applying a small amount of grease to a gas scooter's variator can have a positive impact on its performance. The variator is a key component in the scooter's continuously variable transmission (CVT) system, which is responsible for transferring power from the engine to the wheels. Here are a few reasons why greasing the variator can be beneficial:
Reduced friction: The variator consists of pulleys and rollers that interact with each other during operation. Applying grease to these components reduces friction between them, allowing for smoother movement and less energy loss. This can result in improved acceleration and overall performance.
Heat dissipation: Grease can help dissipate heat generated during the variator's operation. As the scooter's engine revs up and power is transmitted through the CVT system, heat can be generated due to friction. Grease acts as a lubricant and a heat conductor, preventing excessive heat buildup and reducing the risk of damage to the variator.
Preventing wear and tear: Over time, the variator components can experience wear and tear due to constant movement and friction. Applying grease forms a protective layer between the pulleys and rollers, reducing the rate of wear and extending the lifespan of the variator. This can help maintain consistent performance and avoid the need for premature replacements.

There is dry lube spray specifically for this.I personally wouldn't use grease. I try to keep my variator and weights degreased and dry as a bone. The plastic rollers are supposed to be "self lubricating"

I have tried it in Vespa SXL 150 and completed 100 KM riding, so far it's smooth and the jerking at the speed of 20-30 KM also totally gone. If this sustain at least 1000KM after the greasing once, I will defiantly use it further. Cons of this tips- some torque decrease at high climbing with high load. Also increase little noise maybe. I didn't use any lube on Bushing/ Boss at all. I applied MP3 Lithium Complex Grease. Please also mention how often you clean and lube the rollers.

I'm glad to hear that you have tried greasing the rollers on your Vespa SXL 150 and that it has improved the smoothness of your ride. It's important to note that the frequency of cleaning and lubricating the rollers can vary depending on the specific scooter model, riding conditions, and personal preference. However, here are some general guidelines: Cleaning: It's a good practice to clean the rollers periodically to remove any dirt, debris, or built-up grease. This can be done by removing the variator cover and inspecting the rollers. Clean them using a mild solvent or soapy water, and ensure they are completely dry before reassembly. Lubrication: Applying grease to the rollers is beneficial for reducing friction and ensuring smooth operation. The type of grease you mentioned, MP3 Lithium Complex Grease, can be suitable for this purpose. When applying the grease, make sure to distribute it evenly on the roller surfaces. Be careful not to use excessive grease, as it may attract more dirt and cause other issues. Lubrication Frequency: The frequency of roller lubrication can vary. Some riders choose to lubricate the rollers every 1000-2000 kilometers, while others may prefer a more frequent interval. Pay attention to any changes in performance or noise levels, as these can indicate when lubrication is needed. Monitor Performance: After greasing the rollers, it's essential to monitor the scooter's performance. Assess whether the smoothness and reduction in jerking are sustained over a longer period, such as 1000 kilometers as you mentioned. Keep an eye on any changes in torque or increased noise, as these could indicate the need for further adjustments or maintenance. Remember, regular maintenance and proper care are crucial for keeping your scooter in optimal condition. If you have any concerns or doubts about the maintenance process or need further assistance, it's always a good idea to consult the owner's manual or reach out to a Vespa authorized service center for specific recommendations based on your scooter model. @@VirberelloScooterTips , first of all thank you so much for sharing the important tips. I already passed 500 km, now I find some minor friction, but which is still tolerable. After passed the 1000KM milestone, I will try new variator roller with grease this time. My current rollers are old and its plastic surface produce nearly 0 lubrication. Hope new roller may roll smoother for longer period. I will keep you updated my experience.

Hi what if i chnage bit heavy (bit heavy weighted) rollers ..plan is quickly connect/response...i wud like to convert petrol scooter with electric scooter..so at crack shaft we can connect motor to the cvt box...i see there is lot of energy losses.. when motor spins fast then only the centrifugal is responses to rear wheel...so to quick response do i need to increase weight or still lighter the rollers ? Please assist me

When converting a petrol scooter to an electric scooter and considering changes to the rollers in the CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission) system, it's essential to understand how the CVT works and how different roller weights can affect its performance. In a CVT system, the rollers play a crucial role in determining how quickly the scooter responds and transfers power from the engine (or motor, in your case) to the rear wheel. The roller weights are part of the mechanism that changes the effective gear ratio by moving closer or farther apart. Heavier rollers can have a different effect on your scooter's performance compared to lighter ones: Heavier Rollers: When you use heavier rollers, the centrifugal force required to move them outward in the CVT system increases. This means that your scooter will require higher RPMs (revolutions per minute) for the motor to engage and transfer power to the rear wheel. Heavier rollers may provide better acceleration and hill-climbing capabilities because they can delay the shift to a higher gear ratio, allowing the motor to operate at a higher RPM. Lighter Rollers: Lighter rollers, on the other hand, will engage the CVT at lower RPMs, allowing for quicker response but potentially sacrificing some top speed and torque. Lighter rollers can improve responsiveness and off-the-line acceleration. To determine which type of rollers are best for your electric scooter conversion, you'll need to consider your specific goals and the capabilities of your electric motor. Here are a few factors to keep in mind: Motor Characteristics: Understand your electric motor's power curve, torque characteristics, and RPM range. This will help you choose the right roller weight to match the motor's performance. Scooter Use: Consider how you plan to use the scooter. If you want quick city commuting and responsive acceleration, lighter rollers might be a better choice. If you need more torque and hill-climbing ability, heavier rollers might be the way to go. Experimentation: It may take some trial and error to find the ideal roller weight that suits your specific setup and preferences. You can try different weights and observe how they affect your scooter's performance. Remember that changing roller weights can have a noticeable impact on your scooter's behavior. Always ensure that your scooter is safe to ride and doesn't put undue stress on the motor or other components. Consult with experts in scooter modifications and electric vehicle conversions to ensure that your modifications are safe and efficient for your intended use.
