My 6 month old Sulcata, Fido, has gone almost everywhere with me since he was a few weeks old. He sleeps with me, snuggles in the crook of my neck, sometimes eats my hair (oops😧) sticks his head and neck soooooo far out go look around when he's riding in the truck, has to be always touching my skin somehow if he's able to, comes to his name, sticks his head and neck waaaaay out for kisses all over his adorable tortoise face and falls asleep on my chest like a raggedy ann doll with head feet and little arms all the way out and flopped every wich way. And I KNOW how lucky I am that he is not afraid of me or me picking him up or anything. I know he's not really supposed to act this way. But my heart melts every second that I'm with him cuz he's so danged adorable🥰❤ he's one in a million. Thank you Keenan for making this channel! Everything I know about Sulcatas I learned here! You've probably saved Fido's life a hundred times already. Hahaha
Aaaw.. I love that.. Yes you are so dang lucky. I live in Greece and it's illegal to keep tortoises as pets here. Such a shame. I think they're girgeous.
One day my wife was hand feeding our red footed tortoise and after two leaves, she tried placing her hand in the floor to see if it would climb up. The tortoise thought it was still being fed and bit her. 😂
He gets in sewer water w/ crocs, regularly partakes in riskier action sports....but Kenan gets flinch-y when handfeeding Herc! Lol No, I understand! In the rare instance Morla gets my finger accidentally, it is NOT a fun time--and she's just a 6" Russie!
LOL! HERC, u're adorable!!! ❤🐢 I do agree...a natural setting is good. However, because of the health issues my Russie tort, Morla, came with when I got her, she had to be handled a lot to treat her acute issues from a chronic condition. This, in combination with what is probably just an especially rare, sweet personality, built a lot of trust. She actually won't eat if I don't give her some cuddle time daily (she sits on my chest while I recline and falls asleep or just looks up at me and does that "boneless sprawl" torties do when relaxing). For the most part, I love taking that time to do that. It's just the especially busy or social days when I'm not in until relatively later in the evening that it becomes a little bit of a chore. Luckily she does like to just lay there, so at least I can read or watch your videos, Kenan! 🤠!
Kenan - This video was a PERFECT answer to her question and you also showed from a really good perspective in today's video. She and others, of course, will see a real interaction from a guy with many years (of how to correct) care for these wonderful animals. It included many species of Tortoises in one short "how to," and keep and the interactions and basic, and requirements for every one of them with lots of information and the most important lesson of all - want a Turtle? Always ask yourself a LOT of questions before even consider a Tortoise (or any animal) - NO impulse buys. Brilliant stuff Kenan 🐢
My turtle was so easy. Two days and he was eating from my hands and not scared to be hold. Now it's like a little dog. Happy to see me and to be fed and handled.
Great advice!! My roommate and I are firm believers in letting the babies decide what they want to do. Now if they want to do something that isn’t safe or polite to their siblings, we’re obviously going to prevent them from doing that. We have 2 cats, a chihuahua, a cockatiel and a Russian tortoise, so we’re used to picky opinionated animals who don’t like to be told what to do. That said, Shelly actually has decided to climb up me while I’m sitting on the couch and sit on my shoulder before. And he did stay like that for quite a while just chilling out like an infant on mommy’s shoulder of his own accord. But just like the other pets, you feel blessed for the lovey moment and let them decide when they’ve had enough touchy-feely time. The other pets do that with each other too. The cats and the dog think Shelly is their baby. They’re respectful though. The cats will share his heat lamp, but they always leave space in case he wants to move. And they all bring him offerings of blankets and pillows and tuck him in at night. Again, this is not something we have trained them to do. They just decided he needed more bedding material one night, made a fort for him and gently patted him down when they decided it was his bedtime. My roommate and I just watched. We were so dumbfounded we didn’t think to record any of it. The dog is 15 and barely potty trained. Sammy, our female cat, chooses not to recognize her own name. And my male cat, Taz, trained me and has learned on his own how to negotiate terms for himself. And here they are tucking in a tortoise. It’s like my house is Narnia.
Seeing the work you do with these special and wonderful animals brings a joy to my heart that I dont get too often. Thank you for all your hard work to help all of these animals.
I got my turtles for about 10years now, and with me when they are laying underneath there heating lamp they do not run away anymore when I come in. When some ones els comes in or more people they will scare and hide, really cool to see that trust grow 😊
Love your vids Kenan , got my daughter a 7 month old baby hermonnes tortoise other week and she loves him , just bathing him as we speak he loves a soak lol , everything seems good with him atm and I’m watching video after video for knowledge
Would love to see a video on all the advantages I have here in Arizona for my baby Salcata things I could feed other then grass to expensive to keep watered.
Hey Kenan, which tortoise species do you think is the friendliest, most interactive? In watching your vids I keep going back and forth in deciding which one I would like to get. Thanks. :)
What a wonderful video. This has been very informative for me. I have wondered that exact things. I have noticed that when I moved VERY slow it gives the tortoise and also my box turtles time to warm up. I have three adult box turtles that were never interacted with and now after three years they are eating out of my hands. Very cool.
New subscriber here !! Loved this video I just got a Russian tortoise from pet smart for my sons bday and was curious if you knew where places like pet smart get their tortoises from?
Hey Kenen! Can you do a video on just Red Footed Tortoises because I just got my first Red Footed Tortoise and I would like to have some more information about them. That would be amazing.
Hi Kenan thanks for this vid I learned a lot, I was wondering how do I tame my yellow belied slider to not bite and would it be possible to train my tortoise 🐢???
I have a chartreuse leash I was hoping to put on my baby tortoise. It would go so well on a socatta tortoise because they’re so pale-colored. No sweater tho, but my meemaw knitted him a little hat that ties under the chin, so it’ll fit really cute. But I doubt it would go well with paracytes, or toothpaste. Ugh.
well knowing that a tortoise eating out of your hand is a good trust bond... and one of my two boys definitely eats out of my hands so I guess he doesnt hate me as much... I thought he did because whenever I accidentally make sudden quick movements he tends to 'flinch' back in to his shell a bit before coming back out to like investigate what's going on ^^ whilst the other is more confident where he wouldnt flinch if I accidentally wave my hand in front too quick also I dont pick up my tortoises too often... not because of what you said about them not feeling comfortable about it as much as a dog or a cat... but also because I sometimes worry about dropping one of them, especially when sometimes they would dig their claws in to my hand ^^' people sometimes say a tortoise's shell is indestructible... I dont believe that for a moment because their shells are the same material as your nails which we can sometimes break from accidents, we can even break our own bones from nasty accidents, so what makes them think a tortoise's shell is indestructible? I have heard stories of careless adults letting their kids handle a tortoise, the kid holds the tortoise at a nasty height only for the kid to startle from any sudden movements the tortoise makes and accidentally dropping the poor thing which often damages their shell... that's why I get very cautious when I have to pick up a tortoise due to fear of dropping it by accident
I got a baby sulcata only 6 days ago today he's about 5 months old. I've been looking up on them on and off for years. His name is Angus and he isn't all that scared of our movement and already eats out of our hands, I seem to notice he eats more of it like that, than he does if it's just there for him to help himself. My one concern is that every now and then he makes a little squeak noise. It's the sweetest little thing but to the best of my knowledge they're not supposed to do that unless something is wrong. His heating is right, his poop and urates are fine, he wasn't being handled when he made the noise, no rasping or breathing problems either. I wondered if it was stress!? But he doesn't like much of anything for example he doesn't like baths, won't eat peppers, carrot, strawberries, watermelon or kale. Not that interested in grass either. He loves to dig! Or maybe he's just trying to escape lol 🤣
Yup, one of my baby red eared sliders named Betty, she trusts me and she is very personable. Though, she isn’t really fond with being picked up, which I do not really mind. I just have to tell some of my friends that every time they visit my North American Pond.
Just fostered one for the weekend, you need eyes in the back of your head, they are a lot quicker than you imagine, they climb and hide, fantastic pets though.
Since i have an obsession with animals like tortoises, cats, dogs, birds etc.. my dad decided to get me a cute lil tortoise like the ones in this scene ------> 00:16 and he's such a shy lil bean
I have just got 2 hermann tortoise and have been told not to feed tortoise food only fresh. O am struggling in the UK for weeds all the time. Is it okay to give them dried food a couple times a week?
Thanks for another awesome video!!! I enjoy learning about the Red Foot and Sulcata Tortoises! I can’t wait to get my babies! I hand feed my box turtle sometimes. He likes strawberries, raspberries, mealworms, bananas, etc! And he is not like most box turtles lol, he loves to swim! I always catch him playing in his water area all the time, I say he’s being the Lockness monster. Sheba Cantrell
I have a baby sulcata tortoise and I haven’t been able to bath him in about 2 weeks. He’s a messy eater so now he has a bunch of dried up plants/greens over his mouth and I don’t now how to clean his mouth. I tried using a Q-tip but as soon as I touch his face he hides in his shell. It’s not bad now but I’m afraid that eventually he will have gunk all over his face. Any suggestions?
my 5 month leopard tortoise's shell is soft about a month ago I felt the shell and it is strong I feed him about a handful of wet clover and take him outside for some time and soak him do you know what I am doing wrong?
Me and my sister have the same type of tortoise but hers is lighter and mines is darker but got it from the same store at the same time does it mean mine is older or like different
my turtles are fixed on red. I rarely offer them a piece of strawberry or melon, they eat out of my hand. I no longer enter the enclosure with nails painted red!
Hi Kenan, I'm Panamá, and I have a red foot, and when y grab him he just so happy and when y put him in my bed he just walk into my hand and wan't to grab him and put him in my belly and he fall asleep 😂😂😂, I don't know he is kind of wear, because he is digging but when I arrive he (Litelary) run and say hi opening his mouth and the y gave him some food and he likes when que ate from my hand or just sleep between my hands 😂😂😂😂, and when he see his lash he ran into me and start "climbing" until y put him the lash and then he relax an start walking 😂😂😂, I know he's wear, btw his name is Godzilla. Good luck Kenan you kind of my hero 💚🐢
For me, i have a baby sulcata named Lightning. He never want to do anything, but if i was there. Oh boy he'll be doing eating, and something. He knows that i am the owner 😂 and he even eat a grape cause it fell from my dish to his enclosure next to my desk😂😂💕
Hey Kenan, I recently got a herman tortoise (about a month now), his poop is fine but the urathes are powdery like you talked about, he has a pretty big water bowl and I give him fresh water everyday, the only problem is that he never drinks from it... he knows the water is there because I sometimes put food next to it, then he will go in the water to take the food, but I never see him drink from it or go in it without the food, any tips? Can’t get watermelon throughout the whole year 😅
I have a sulcata baby tortoises, ❤ That I have noticed he has lump or neck look swallow on the top of his neck 😢, I'm heart broken what can I for him or her 💔 please help me
Ah I have a Russian they sleep a lot and are very shy from my experience. I also habe a redfoot and it's the complete opposite they are very curious. But it ranges from species to tortoise
Hey Kenan when you're talkin about the area it's make sure you tell them if it comes out powdery when you watch them go to the bathroom not something you just find in their area cuz you can find it and it's powdery and that's okay but if they're freshly laying it and it's powdery that's bad make sure you distinguish that or if I'm wrong let me know I said it was snakes and lizards
