Thanks for the demo. Worthwhile pointing out if you don’t want to spend as much time doing this buy a Tormek. I wish someone told me that before I did a sharpening class.
Thanks for showing how it’s done. Have chisels and a honing device, and this video gives me the confidence to use chisels and sharpen them. I’ve tried to avoid chisels because other videos make it look like a long and difficult process.

Without the fumbling around with the honing guide it is more fun, like cycling without supporting wheels. It takes some practice but you can use the whole surface of the stones and sharpen more to tools before switching to the next finer grid. The weight, the friction, the handling and the squeaking noise of the honing guide was the reason I sold my Veritas honing guide after one year of use.
Yes, I do see the points for free hand sharpening and I sharpen my japanese kitchen knives that way. The reason I come back to the honing guide for chisels and plane blades is the ability to hit that secondary bevel absolutely spot on each and every time.
Hallo:) great video! What exactly is Your flattening plate? i also have shapton ceramic stones, and i heard that they`re difficult to flaten with regular plate for flattening wet stones, because they are very hard.
I wouldn’t finish at less than 8000. I go to 15000. I then use a leather strop with a paste on it. I keep all my sharpening items on a shelf right by me. So, I just do some work, turn around, finesse on the 15000 and the strop (10 seconds) and then turn back. Making it so convenient means I sharpen often
