Getting a Dexter Family Milk Cow?

We (more specifically, I) really want to get a family milk cow for our dairy needs. The dexter breed, being a really good homestead-scale breed, is the type of milk cow for which we were looking. They are small, docile, easy to handle, and have a cream quality second only to a Jersey. We've taken on a lot in 2017 so we didn't think getting a cow was necessarily something we'd do this year.
Our friend Katie is a registered Dexter breeder but she is liquidating her herd to focus on her Jersey milk/cheese operation. Katie is the rare breeder that is raising her animals to our standards. Once her Dexters are gone, it would be difficult to find another breeder than has our standards and wants to see an experienced milk cow at a discounted price. This might be our only opportunity...

Welcome to the world of homestead scale dairy!!! I've got a series of posts over on my website on how to build a milking stanchion. It should scale down pretty easily for your dexter. One thing to keep in mind with that short cow you're probably gonna want an elevated platform to milk her on just for comfort and efficiency sake....

My dexter broke very well with a natural horsemanship halter with extra nose knots. You can order it at Sunset Halters. I think Dexters have a history of oxen work. Mine was packing my little kid before long, which would be so fun for your kid.

Thank you! This video confirms my choice for our family. We are going to go with Dexters. Seeing you lead her at the end clinched it as I will be the one milking and taking care of her. Plus, they are small enough to not be too intimidating for my kids to learn to milk, too.

Awesome new adventure! I'm so pleased she has a nice temper. My dexter cow was a nightmare. Charged anyone who went into her paddock with her head down unless they carried a whip or a length of poly pipe. Could kick in any direction, Could put her hoof in the milking bucket - even with a leg rope on. I was really glad to see the end of that one but thankfully that sort of temper isn't typical.

So wonderful that you're getting Red, the calf and getting her bred too! So lucky! Oh! I would suggest getting her tested to find out if she's got milk more digestible for folks bellies. If you ever decided to use her as your base for building a herd you could advertise that as well! I know you don't plan such a thing now... but the future? One never knows. =) Good Luck friends! 🌱Be Blessed ღ 🌼

Fun! We love our Dexters! I totally agree with not getting a bull, at least for now. They are a lot more work to manage, and they are typically not as gentle with the kids. It is interesting that she is moving her so soon after being bred, that can be a little risky. If she waits 21 days she would know if she was pregnant for sure. Good luck on this new adventure! You will love the Dexter breed.

these are the "best" homesteader breed on paper. They were used to plow and break ground too. Training her to drag a sledge may allow a multi-purpose addition for a "mini ox" to help with chores around the farm. The calves will mature and can do work too. Hope there is a local vet to keep her healthy and happy. best wishes

Just wondering if all the family members are on board with milking, now, and how it's going in general with you? I have been raising. Saanen goats for years, but have developed rheumatoid arthritis. So am considering parting with my goats for a single Dexter and give up my milk sales for just my farm's use. I've raised cattle before, so I'll be fine with management, just need less legwork that multiple animals necessitate. I hope you and Red are doing well together. Would love to know.

This is an older video so this questions may not get answered, but: Part 1: whats the difference between breed and size? For example: Can a jersey, dexter, and Holstein all be a mini in size? Or does breed determine size? Part 2: what size is Red? She seems smaller than a mini, based on what I have seen but she may just a small mini, idk. Reason: I ask because if i was to get a cow in the future I would like a cow this size that has a high butter fat milk. If thats even possible. I also have borrowed some books on milking cows and homesteading with cows and have been reading stuff online but I am still confused by a lot of it.
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 6 лет назад
There are mini Jerseys etc. but Dexters aren't mini meaning they weren't bred to be small. The "minis" were genetically selected and bred to be small. Dexters naturally developed as small without human intervention
@roefane2258
@roefane2258 6 лет назад
The Grass-fed Homestead, thank you for the fast response, I honestly wasn't expecting it 😀. So to make sure I understand, cows can be small for two reasons: either selective breeding or the natural order of things. If it was selective breeding that makes it a mini, if its natural its just a small cow that just happens to be of a mini size?
