Getting at the heart of teaching: Lisa Lee at TEDxCrestmoorParkED

Lisa Lee gives an emotional talk about making a difference in children's lives as teachers and teaches us that if we reach the inner core first, the common core is more easily taught.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

After 40y of teaching and a lifelong love for Steinbeck it is here that I come across his quotes on teaching. Very touching. Thank you.

She truly is an inspiration and I'm so glad to have her as my teacher. She is brilliant, kind, absolutely strong, and has a wonderful sense of humor. Mrs. Lee is such a role model, and I hope that when I grow up, I can be just a little like her.

Outstanding testimony! Great teachers know that so much of teaching comes down to relationships. Students will always learn more from teachers with which they can identify personally and who are passionate about their subject matter. I love Lisa's (re)definition of the "common core," because she's right, education reforms will come and go, but great relationships will, and always have, fostered great learning.

I'm 21 years old so I'm still called a trainee teacher and to be honest I was depressed that I'm gonna spend the rest of my life teaching. but after watching this energetic woman, damn I wanna be like her when I'm that old.

As a substitute teacher I don't get to have the daily impact that leads to deeper connections, but still hope that they get a little something extra from me when I'm there.

I love this philosophy! This is why I became a virtual teacher -- the "heart," coupled with the "one-on-one" instruction, totally FULFILLS me! Any current or prospective online tutors out there?

I am sure your speech will help students or those who just finished be encouraged. They need to be valued, respected, and accepted and seen as who they are!!

I just saw this! I'm so glad you're going to be a REAL teacher! Relationships will always be the foundation of education, regardless of where you are from. Enjoy every minute - it goes by so quickly!!! However, I still love it as much as I did Day 1. Good luck!

Hi Lisa, I'm 23 years old, and I am on my on-the-job teacher training year at the moment in a school in South London. I absolutely love the kids, but often feel swamped with data, paperwork and deadlines (both from school and for my teachers qualification) that at times when I find myself drowning I wonder if I made the right decision. Thanks for reminding me why I picked such an important job, and I know it will get easier with time and experience. Jenna
