Whether it's a day, a week, or half a career, getting back into writing is even harder than beginning for the first time. Here are two or three Mac apps that have helped me.
LINKS:
The Blank Screen: Productivity for Creative Writers:
Amazon US: amzn.to/3KhF19P
Or Amazon UK: amzn.to/3IzZm94
If you buy through my Amazon links, they may chuck me a penny or two. Or they won't. Either way, it will never cost you anything extra.

It was a dark and stormy comment. Suddenly, a notification rang out...

A couple of observations: - I always write using pencil and paper because I find it's the shortest distance between the idea and the page. - I think it was Hemingway who said to leave your WIP when you are on a roll because you will always want to return to it. - Writing is like an old, rusty tap. You have to turn it on and run the the dirty water before you get to the fresh and clean stuff.

I have the same idea as Hemingway? I think I've just grown a foot taller. But I'm afraid I'll just have to envy you about paper and pencil: for me, it is typing that is the conduit for my head.

Neal Stephensen still writes his novels out with pen and paper, as well. As for me, I can type much faster than I can write with pen and paper - and read it infinitely faster...

Thanks for this kick in the butt. Seems it doesn't take much to bump me off my stride when it comes to my writing, like back trouble, followed hard after by a flu virus that doesn't want to let go. But now it's time to get back to work. Been meaning to try OmniOutliner. It's fairly affordable. Not sure why I've put it off. Planning to finish up this short story I'm working on and then get back to outlining my novel. I'll install OmniOutliner when I'm ready to work on the book again, and I'll let you know what I think of it. Thanks for all that you do, and for being you. And my wife thanks you. She continues to enjoy your videos as much as I do.

Thank you William. In need of inspiration. Fell off the writing wagon in early January. Making cakes is easier and reaches a small but appreciative audience. No - seriously - really it is time I got back to the word processor, in my case it's Pages. May have to revert to the Trollope method - an hour each and every morning.

Awesome tips thanks! And by the way, I went and picked up a M3 Max yesterday. The torture is over, now the guilt is present, but that's easier to get over. I love the thing. Can't put it down. Literally slept with it in my bed last night..hahaha. Incredible! No more making fun of you Apple fan boys!! I want you to do a video on editing. I'm having trouble with the editing process right now. Writing is the fun part, you. get to make up anything and just have a ball. Editing is a whole other nightmare, I have been stuck editing one novel since last year. I get five chapters into it, feel overwhelmed, and start work on something else. Can you do a video about how you edit things you've written?
@WilliamGallagher
@WilliamGallagher 4 месяца назад
I have this image now of you in bed, having been typing for hours, and your head falling forward onto the MacBook Air, like we all used to over actual books. AS for editing, I can't think of how I'd show it on 58keys. There'd be a lot of shots of me looking glum. Although I must say I enjoy editing much more than you do. I never fail to be improved by editing. Oh! I can think how to show an editing exercise that I think teaches a lot, or at least it taught me, but I don't know that it could sustain a whole edition. I will think about it though, thank you.

@@WilliamGallagher You're not too far off in that description. I woke up with it still in my lap and clutched in my fingers..haha. EXCEPT, it's the M3 Max Pro, (not Air) in 16 inches. I dropped way too much on this thing for it to be an Air! As hard as that was and as empty as my bank account is now, now that I'm using it, it's worth it. It's an incredible machine! Flipping the lid open literally takes my breath away. And yes, on the editing...figure out something to show us. I am stuck in editing hell. I've written like three other entire novels to avoid editing. LOL.

Great advice. Open the tap between what bugs you and the cursor. Which, often, is also me, if a cursor is he who curses. Some days, sheesh, you just gotta vent.

That would be a curser, wouldn't it? I am tickled by how the insertion point is sometimes called an I-beam. Especially if I'm grumbling when I use it.

Hi William It's just a quick one, really. I have written three books: one on my line of business, one short self-help, and one that takes the reader on a journey of self-discovery, drawing from an experience I had in the Amazon Jungle a few years back. I wrote the 80,000-word last one by the seat of my pants with very little worked out prior. I am working on a screenplay in FD but am unsure if it's possible to write a screenplay just from the blank page. I just watched your Omni Outline Video, and that looks pretty good. Just welcome your words of wisdom if you have any ... 🙂
@WilliamGallagher
@WilliamGallagher 3 месяца назад
Unless you are already commissioned to write the script, there are no rules. And even then, the only rule is that if the production company wants you to start with an outline, a treatment or any such shorter document, you do that. Otherwise, you just write any way you want. If you do just pile ahead then you need to accept that you're likely to throw away a lot later, but oftentimes I do exactly that and I find the tradeoff is fine. Final Draft will help you outline, though. The latest two versions have the beat outline which might be good. My 58keys videos get planned in OmniOutliner but they don't have to be. I just find it handy to be able to dump a lot of ideas down into it and then rearrange, combine, delete them until I end up with what I think is a good sequence. Even then, I will very often just start writing to see where I go and accept that later I'm going to have to cut out a lot.

the aphorism i liked best was "A writer is someone who finds writing harder than most people." (Don't know the origin. Ah. Thomas Mann apparently.)

Assignment done. **** They cut their engines for me. It has been over a year that I have taken chocolates on my walk and give them away, often to people you would normally pass by or just say hi. This morning was no exception. The wild turkeys are now around and squawking and strutting at the Surgery Center parking lot. The blooms are coming on full peak. I am sneezing and sniffing. The ants are on parade in my house. It is Spring! As I saw a familiar Spanish-speaking landscaper, he cut his engine and we talked about his work today, his upcoming vacation, and who the new worker was with him. Then he took a Reese Easter Egg chocolate for himself and one for the new worker They are huge, and truly the best of the Reese holiday selections. The Chocolate Road story continues with the FedEx drive, USPS driver, garage people, a roofer in the hood, a house cleaner, or any other number of those I encounter on several walks a day. They all cut their engines if they are on. I just saw the landscapers on their break, my second walk, and was introduced to the new worker who thanked me for the chocolate I left with his coworker earlier. Then I watched your video and was inspired to write. My pickup line is….would a chocolate make your day better? I have found there is little division on this question, and even those who say they cannot for whatever reason, we have connected. I feel special, people will cut their engines for me. I might be a pollution threat with the starting and the stopping of engines, but perhaps the connections made are worth it. What do you think?
