Great BTS and lighting info. I used run with a triple speedlight bracket ( kids these days won't ever know the feeling of using a triple bracket lol) for events indoor and outdoor. Now it's ad200 and Xplor all day 😎.
I know...had the triple threat too...before the xplor! Got tired of setting that thing up! Speedlights work great for me when the xplor is overkill. Cheers.
Hey, i am with you on that one :-) I have a number of branded and yungnuo lights (mainly the 600), and i have a stash of AA batteries. and a couple of triple brackets. A pain when you have exhaust the batteries, especially if you use like 8 per flash (if you use an external battery pack). It takes forever to recharge. And then i discovered the AD200. I now have two of them. No more fiddling around with AA batteries. Happy shooting.
Outstanding Omar! Mate you hit it out of the park! Outstanding explanation about light fall off!! Great educational video, gooooooorgeous work!!! Man I love them! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
3yrs old and still relevant to me. thank you for the effort and sharing. i am an appreciative subscriber. and thank you for the thoughtful and respectful detail to attention. you sir, are what it means to be a professional! BIG thumbs up.
Wow! I learned so much from this video! Thank you. I’m new to lights so I love how much info you give. Keep it up. Definitely watching all your other videos too.
Great video! You made a lighting tutorial that felt practical and easy to comprehend, without getting into the weeds like some tutorials. I've been watching a lot of your videos over the last few months. Hopefully I have learned as much as I have laughed at your presentation. Last year I picked up the X-T3 with the 18-55mm lens as my first mirrorless. A few weeks ago I bought a 55-200mm lens. My wife thinks I'm crazy because now I examine lighting everywhere we go. Keep up the great work!
This may be one of the best videos with simple explanations of what you're doing and the results. I learned more in this 16 minutes than I have in classes and others explanations. Great tutorial!
I have just found you on RU-vid in the last few days. Let me just say you are awesome. Flash scares me to death. Especially in really low light conditions. I have watched this video around 3 times already. And will watch it again and again till it sinks in. Have a low light wedding in a few weeks, like oh gee! Would love to see more of these. I wish you had a online flash class. The way you teach is outstanding.
One of the best explanations of using flash and the camera settings I have seen. Thank you! You have done a great job of explaining ambient light and flash. Also liked that you talked about various ways to achieve a hair light. Always enjoy watching your videos. I have completely converted to fuji. I know you use your fuji cameras for more personal shooting but it would be great to see it used in a shoot like this. I realize you would have to invest/borrow in a 50-140mm lens. I just upgraded to the X-T3 and am really happy with it. Ric
Great images, Omar. Love the presentation format in this video and great to see content focused purely on how to make good images. Happy New Year to you and yours.
I was watching your wideos just to convince myself to buy fuji but this one is really informative and actual pictures are top-notch. Thanks for sharing
Wow. Stunning photos. Great video, more how to's like this man! Every time I watch a video of you actually taking photos I learn something mega simple that I didn't realise/hadn't noticed before!
this video was so much more than the title lead me to believe. I thought it was going to be like a tutorial of the speedlights like a gear review, but it was so much more about how to work with people in a photo shoot and was awesome.
You’re seriously the best man. I mostly just shoot street but have been thinking about doing some more professional type stuff at some point in the future and your videos really help a ton. Honestly the only channel that I actually retain info from. Please keep up the great work!
Can tell you’ve done this a long time- simple setup, but you’ve obviously practiced what looks good. 👍Great shots and fun setting I don’t think I’ve seen before in a lighting video
Very instructive video, I m willing to train myself at flash photography with my Fuji and it would be nice to see you doing some other tutorials about flash photography in different configurations, at night, street photography, cheap setup, club, birthday, school etc... 😊👌
This is a great video because: 1) what you say is correct, 2) you explain it all very well. 3) the coverage is good, 4) the pics look great, which shows that theory is not just for its own sake but brings about results! The only thing I'm missing in the equation: shutterspeed. I use to control ambient by shutterspeed, so I don't need to bother changing ISO/flash power. Which of course comes with some constraints: HSS and motion blur. Was it on purpose that you didn't mention exposure time, just not to overcomplicate things?
Awesome photoshoot. Speedlights are great. Batteries re the achilles heel. It was no doubt a busy photoshoot for you, and thankfully, you had the Temple all to yourselves. Imagine if people were milling around, you would have struggled.
You're the frickin' man. I remember watching a video of yours a while back...maybe on a Fuji camera or something. Basic explanations and just good foresight to pass on. No hype needed. Subbed!
Wow, that was really instructacool !!! Thanks for all these marvelous and funny vlogs this year. Hope you can squeeeeze some more out next year. Wishing you and the family a magnificent 2019!!!
Wow! New to your channel looking for info on the Fuji X-T20/30 then this lighting vid is amazing. Love your fun and extremely informative approach to photography. Thanks so very much!
Great stuff Omar, & beautiful pictures. I've been watching your videos for a while now, & I love the Fujifilm stuff (I use an X-T2, so am biased), but this goes beyond brand to technique, & I love it. Very useful, very helpful. Makes me want to learn more about strobes. Thank-you!
Simply Awesome Photography, but after watching these gorgeous pics you put me in a spot of bother to chose Mark IV or XT3.. because I'm getting used mark IV for 1500 USD need one for Wedding Photography, right now I'm using Nikon D750, please guide me to get one :)
In group shots, did you still keep the aperture wide open? Would’ve been super nice of the camera settings were shown for each pic. Really helpful video nonetheless
Was the family also shot wide open? If so, are they all in focus bc wide angle? Esp the cuddling around the kid shot where they're not lined up on same plane.
The truth is a beautiful picture and a beautiful explanation of the method of photography in low light I hope to explain the bracketing and how to work the best settings in Fuji camera xt20
Look at that umbrella baby.. It's huge 😅 Can I use only one speed light ( + umbrella and reflector) to make home studio for family portrait? I do photography just for fun, but sometime I want to do portrait for my family. Thanks
That's a great question!! Single person...f1.4...I stopped down to 2.8 when they were a group. F4 probably would've been safer to make sure everyone was in focus, but I live dangerously. For lighting, this means I either had to change my ISO by 3 stops or raise my light power. I usually choose to raise the lights by one stop and ISO by one stop to keep ISOs somewhat close but without stressing out the speedlights. Thank for watching.
Excellent video - thank you. Would you recommend the 7’ modifier w/2-Godox. V860II flashes to light a group shot of 20 people, 2 rows of 10, outside? I usually use 2 speed lights placed on either side of the lens directed away from the camera to reduce shadows on the faces. I like your method.
Omar... love your videos. Get thee to www.magnetmod.com! You can ditch the tape and such for your gels. You will love their modifiers. I have at least one of everything they make. Worth every penny and more. Even if you only end up using the grips and gels, it’s still very much worth it. But you may find the other modifiers useful too. I use one or two bounce modifiers for groups instead of huge umbrellas. So much more portable and fast to set up. Anyway, consider it. The taped on gels seem easy until you slap a magnet attachment on.
At 7:01 the left of the face of the girl wearing white dress seems to be a little dark. Maybe you need a third light for that. Correct me if I am wrong.
You mention aperture and ISO and light power, but never say which shutter speed, are you just using your sync speed? Im trying to learn and I feel like your video is the best i have seen so far, but its missing that piece. -John
@@ogonzilla Awesome! Thank you so much for responding so quickly! Your channel is so helpful. I did my first portrait shoot with my 4 month old son, with real lighting and such. I did it mostly TTL as I had some good sunlight coming in, and they came out pretty good it think. Need more practice with backgrounds props and poses, but still, I'm pretty proud of myself being a beginner. Thank you again!
great video, I'm currently experimenting with Speedlight, how do you focus with an xt 20, if you only want to capture the flash light? in this case is the evf dark. Thanks
Go to your screen settings and turn off "Preview EXP/WB"...this will allow you to see in the dark as you darken the ambient exposure. Turn on image review so you can see what the flash is doing after your shot.
Good explanation but next time rise ambient by 1/2 stop to 1 stop, probably the family would like to have background of the church.Where is your light meter?
Light meter? In a temple? Nah. Only when i am in the studio. Imagine stopping to re-meter every time you move the light. There's a time and place for light meters.
eagleeye photo models feel comfortable when you hold a light meter next to their face. Teenagers? You have to first explain to them what it is, why you’re holding it next to their face, what readings mean, blah blah blah. It’s just going to add more layers to the explanation. Another point. Experts can figure out the flash power, based on experience. It comes with time. Please note, I’m not yet such an expert, but I use a light meter when I have perfect control over the setting, eg a studio type of setting. In a temple, there are soooo many things to work with. Thanks for your view and explanation though.
Great tutorial Omar! I would really like to see more of your lighting techniques with the associated results such as you did here. This is very helpful. Thanks!!
