To all those who are complaining that crayfish should be called crawfish let us consult Wikipedia: "Some kinds of crayfish are known locally as lobsters,[3] crawdads,[4] mudbugs,[4] and yabbies. In the Eastern United States, "crayfish" is more common in the north, while "crawdad" is heard more in central and southwestern regions, and "crawfish" further south, although there are considerable overlaps.[5]" So everyone is right!!!! Mhahahahahaha

A study about the benefits of salt consumption in space, and no mention of teleportation? FORD PREFECT: I bought some peanuts. ARTHUR DENT: What?! FORD PREFECT: If you’ve never been through a matter transference beam before, you’ve probably lost some salt and protein. The beer you had should’ve cushioned your system a bit. How are you feeling? That's strange, I tend to drink a lot more water after eating some really salty food. Maybe my brain's just wired to feel that urge more because of the "common knowledge" that salt increases thirst?

It seems to me that those people or crayfish accustomed to being in a crowd would be more likely to hallucinate that others are present when drunk alone, whereas those accustomed to being alone would be less likely/take longer to hallucinate that others are present. The hallucinations result in the flipping behaviour.

the crayfish study is a perfect example of government waste and the second part, sodium is critical for controlling hydraulic levels in our bodies and we sweat the stuff out under stress as well as high temperatures
@lodgin
@lodgin 7 лет назад
I might be really, really wrong. But I think it might be something to do with a herding instinct of some sort. If you are in a crowd, you are safer. Either because they will take care of you, or because you become one of many and your likelihood of becoming a predator's dinner is lower. And so if you're alone, your body may try to resist the effects of drunkenness more in an attempt to get you to a safer location.

They add sodium to sports drinks to increase absorption. Your body needs the electrolyte WITH the water, and salt is an electrolyte. With low electrolytes in your diet (read: low salt), your body will treat more of the water as excess and pass it faster to restore/maintain the right electrolyte level in your blood. I thought this was well known already.

The tale of the video is never to cook crayfish with wine or beer, on the serious side of the experiment, when socializing, the creatures elevate their level of metabolism and the rate of absortion of alcohol as opposed to when they are alone and resting.

I've heard that having peanuts, pretzels, or other salty foods at a bar will entice people to drink more. Apparently many people go for a sip of water after eating salty foods. However I've known for years that salt makes people (or at least, women) retain water. So I figured a salty diet would make you less thirsty. Maybe women are more inclined to notice water retention?
@elenna_alexia
@elenna_alexia 7 лет назад
High salt diets are unhealthy for a whole load of other reasons. Salt raised blood pressure and contributes to cardiovascular disease and it's been implicated as a contributor to autoimmune diseases. So if you suffer from asthma, multiple sclerosis, etc. or if you're at risk for a heart attack you might want to pay special attention to not eating salty foods, but it's best to do that anyway for disease prevention.

I could be a case study for the second half of this vid lol I almost never drink water, getting most of my liquids from meals, and I also prolly ingest 'too much' salt... Plenty of human crayfish about then. But some people, and some entire pubs, are not. Places where if anything more alcohol is consumed and stronger stuff at that, but all that happens is lots of conversation and contemplation, and the most crustacean things ever get is between the ideals of plato and socrates, or C# and Hascal.

re: salty foods and thirst... Is that conventional wisdom? Huh. My dad always told us to eat salty foods if we were out hiking or driving, or other situations where we didn't have a whole lot of water, because it was supposed to help us retain water and not get so thirsty/dehydrated. (Until we could get someplace with water -- like, he didn't leave us dehydrated; it was a stop-gap measure.)
