Girl puts on a dozen layers and still gets ready faster than me in morning because I spend a good thirty minutes trying to decide which t-shirt to wear with my jeans.
I love this outfit. So ladylike and pristine. I remember wearing "can-can" slips underneath our little gathered church dresses in the early 60's. I would always go show Daddy when I was all dressed up and he would say the same thing every Sunday..."Ooh, you're the grandest tiger in the jungle!" I miss him. He was the best.
My mom was a little girl in the 1950's. There was a store not far from old my house that still sold these undergarments and clothes until the store closed on their 100 year anniversary in 2012.
You look lovely! I was in my aughts and pre-teens in the 50s. But we certainly wore crinolines, which we starched to a fairtheewell and hung up-side-down to dry...the better to stand out straight. The idea was, I believe, to look like a frilly lampshade.😊

Born in '43, so i can attest that this is right. Bobby pins to set hair at night, can cans, bobby sox, gloves, scatter pins on a sweater set, garter belt, and oh so much more.
My 7 year old adores your stuff. She ran in our local pageant last summer and this summer is her goodbye for it- she wanted something "classy and elegant. Like Audrey Hepburn." And your videos are a huge inspiration to her ideas. Thank you!
today's dofference with historical clothing is that now the body is the trend while in older historical fashion the silhouette is the trend u can achieve the silhouette with proper undergarments and u can achieve the trendy body with diets, surgery etc + now its more abt the body fitting the clothes and not the contrary
@@melowlw8638 Nailed it. People always think I'm taller and slimmer than I am, and I thank using the proper foundation garments (not mere "underwear"!) beneath my usual daily vintage styles. I'm plus-size, 5'3", and the word homely doesn't begin to describe me; but, the right foundation, posture, and deportment make all the difference!
I just need to remember every time I am cursing how uncomfortable my Spanx are that at least I’m not in 18 layers, of which includes a corset, hoop skirt, and a bum roll 😂
@I'll be your Stumbleine the corsets were comfortable tho and made of quality fabric and were meant to help support the weight of the dress to make the clothes more comfortable and fitting
Yep and when you think of it that way it makes little sense that people think the late Victorians and Edwardians were dying of heat when they write practical the same things just with crinolines instead of starched petticoats! Sorry for the random addition
@@di7209crinolines/hoop skirts are a lot cooler than petticoats too! since they hold the garments away from the wearer's body it's basically like you're just wearing shorts/bloomers/whatever historic undergarment. petticoats are a lot easier to manage since they are just a bunch of tulle but certainly can be hotter.
Absolutely. The unions were so important. My great aunts worked in the factories in Manchester, New Hampshire making shoes and basically clothing that lasted forever.
I remember momma made clothes. I even have some of her patterns. I know she wore those petticoats with her tea length wedding dress and I loved playing ballerina in mine after church. But with her house dresses it was a starched apron instead of petticoats.
Omg this reminds me of my grandma. Every time we go out. She is always wearing an outfit where everything matches. Even to the purse! That's what I love about her. Just the little things are awesome!
My great grandma got much of her jewlery during the early and mid 50s and I now have most of it. Those earrings are stunning and remind me so much of a pair she had! Same colors and everything, just different shape. I've really learned to appreciate stuff like broaches on nice outfits now that I have so many of hers!
Yes, but we looked good!! I wore four and five under ruffled half slips that when you walked down the rows between school desks knocked paper and pencils both off the desk, they even had a thing called a merry widow that was strapless and an addition section that shaped the wearer from bodice to below four inches below the waist. We also made sure our lipstick matched the color of our dress and that the seems of our stockings were straight down the back of our legs.
If you were shopping or running errands, the shoes were comfortable. Had to be! Many women didn't drive or didn't have the car during the day. Not quite the Oxfords of the 1940s but well built and made to last. Dress shoes were different.
The starch in the frilly net petticoat may have been sugar water. You dipped the net part into the syrup and let it drip a bit and then hung it to dry. You needed the full slip underneath to keep the netting from hurting when you sat on it. Had to work to get all that into a desk in high school.
@@lavyarad Wow, good question, I think it was probably because we hung them outside to dry, and because they didn't touch the floor. I don't think we ever had an ant problem in the house.😊
My mother-in-law is from Germany and said they used the water from boiling potatoes for their starch. They used the sugar water for hairspray. She said it was common to have bees buzzing around their hair. lol
Did a theatre production set in the late 1940s-50s. For my costume I wore an outfit quite similar to what you are wearing (green, hat, gloves, the whole thing) and I was just in love with it. Those performances were so fun and ever since I've been in love with 1950s fashion
@@MsAngelique I suspect your Papa, rest his soul, would be doing cartwheels in his grave if he saw the amount of effort that young men nowadays have to put in for the shockingly low quality (on average) of women in the 2020's. It's gotten so bad that the word "hoflation" was created to describe this phenomenon. You want to know why something like 1 in 3 men under 30 haven't had sex in the past year? The juice just ain't worth the squeeze these days.. My advice? If you have the money, invest heavily in pet food cause there's gonna be a lot of single men and women in the next 15 or 20 years looking for a companion, and unable to find, or unwilling to settle for a human one.
Also, a lower, slightly chunky tapered heel in a shoe with a peek-a-boo toe was extremely common for informal going-out. My great-grandmother and grandmother had many pair that I clomped around in as a child!
I wear these exact garments every thursday and sunday night! (According to the weather of course.) Basic undergarments, girdle, slip, stockings, petticoat and pillowsheet thin dress 💗 I like to keep it modest and tradional when going to my formal events✨
I was born in '50, and yep, this was pretty much it. The only difference was, my mother never owned a longline bra or a petticoat. Just regular bras and full and half slips. The old gal wore a girdle until the day she died, nine years ago. I remember it being a pearl clutcher if your bra strap or slip showed. Now, bras are practically outerwear, and who owns a slip?
My grandma was born in 32, and she was a bank teller for years and years. Her collection of hats was amazing =) I kept a few for myself, but her head was much smaller than mine so not very many fit lol
GORGEOUS DRESS! I want! My grandma wore all those layers. I hated them. She made us girls wear slips - short or full - when we went to church year around. When I grew up, I tossed all my slips and haven't owned one since.
Back in the early 70's my mother told me instead of pettycoats, they used to wear crinolines under their skirts to make them full in the 50's. My mother-in-law had 67 pairs of matching shoes, hats, gloves, and purses; back in the 40's, and 50's. I wish they would have saved some of that stuff for me... That'd be so cool. 🤷♀️ Oh well. 👵☮️🖖
I love petticoats, I always dressed my daughters in them forever, and my granddaughter as well. My Mom loved it that I wanted to have petticoats under all of my dresses and gowns ( even if noone else did.) I still have fabrics to make new ones for myself. When you seee a set of vintage cotton border embroidered curtains grab them up, they make the prettiest bottom ruffles for a cotton petticoat. You can also make your clothing or remodel it to have a "petticoat-look" peaking out from under a skirt or dress ruffle.
My family has lived in Florida for generations, and I've NEVER understood how my great-grandmother could stand the humid heat of Hialeah with so many layers! I'd melt like a popsicle 💀
I would borrow my older sisters petticoats ( some had been left behind when they left home.) Layer and layer them, and the dance and twirl from one end of the house to the other, pretending that I was the main dancer for "Lawrence Welk."
One thing is that, with a more elegant outfit, hair would’ve probably been worn up in a nice hairdo, since long down hair was either youthful or reminiscent of the 40s (hair was real short then, 40s hair reached the shoulders though and that was long for early 20th century) which people wanted to obviously move past from. Red lips are also more 40s. A huge misconception/misunderstanding is that red lips was real popular in the 50s but that’s more 40s. Peach or soft oranges and pink lips were popular, worn by Marilyn a lot. I hope this helps!
As I recall house dresses were not worn outside and they were basically a duster. Just a thin cotton, buttoned, no shape garment. If you were going out, you would have all your undergarments on and replace the house coat with a dress for going out.
Agreed. Women were very comfortable while they did their housework except if they were on the daytime TV then they were pearls a shirt waste dresses and stiletto heels and they did their dishes and vacuum cleaning and all of that

I was there, at my mother's side, in the 50's, and I remember women dressed like that in the stores and streets of New York City... it was a beautiful time.
Who doesn't love a good old foundation piece, but as much as some today fawn over them, I could not be bothered with this many layers to just go out during a summer day to do some shopping. I can get out of the door with bra/undies/dress/shoes/bag and I'm done. None of it has to match, it's not hot---wouldn't want to trade that freedom.
My mum would rip off her girdle as soon as she got home. My little sister, who was being toilet trained, saw her do it and said 'oh mummy, what did you do in them? 😂😂
Way too many under garments. I don't how a woman would have survived the Australian summers. I'm sure she would have fainted from the heat. Thank God we don't have wear so much under our dresses.
Actually compared to what was considered to be proper wear during when women wore long dresses with several layers underneath. This lady is in some ways nearly scandalous with the little numbers of undergarments she is showing in the vid. Basically it is what one is used to having on for garments. Look at the Middle East with not only Muslim women, there are Jewish women in some cases dressed exactly the same way.
I was unaware that people don’t match their accessories now. Also, we should bring back petticoats bc I miss them and they’re so pretty. If I wore one out today it’s be considered as ‘weird’ or ‘abnormal’
I once found a petticoat in a thrift store (Germany, so it was for a dirndl for oktoberfest) and shortened it a bit to _sometimes, maybe_ wear it under a skirt... Never worn a skirt without it ever since xD. It's just so practical against rain, the cold, wind blowing up a skirt,... and it makes the garments look so pretty.
I was born in 1960, and I remember my mother doing ALL of this! And you would NEVER leave the house without a girdle, stockings, beehive hair or high heels. How mom would gripe when she would take me to the ladies room with her and struggle to get that girdle down! Quite a chore! I was flabbergasted as a kid as to why women would torture themselves that way!
Some of us do! There are quite a few videos, books, and websites out there on dressing "vintage style," complete with vintage or vintage-inspired makeup and hairstyles! There are plenty of ways to make it wearable for the everyday.
