As a 75 year old alone gay man who was one of those who fought for the right for all of us to marry ... I so appreciated everything about this episode. Your discussion should be required viewing for anyone who even entertains the idea to marry. It is profound, educational, moving, and life changing. I seriously hope Tangents is as therapeutic for you as for your subscribers! You two change lives. Thank you.

@cheryldingley4546

This is exactly one of the main reasons why you guys have such a healthy connected relationship - you allow each other to express yourselves - sensitive to each other’s hurts snd moods. When you want the best for each and are willing to be kind it works. In many relationships at least one partner feels unheard. They get such an angry attack if they express their hurts and needs. This as you guys expressed causes resentment and break down. I could listen to you guys for hours. Really enjoyed all the sharing. Thanks

My (now legal) husband and I met over 40 years ago and are STILL developing our relationship. As far as the nursing homes go, I worked in a couple of those - I would not wish that living situation on my worst enemy. Stay healthy and stay home as long as you can! My husband is in his 80s - recently shattered his pelvis and has dementia, but he'll NEVER go to a nursing home!

@@tangentswithtylerandtoddY'all might be a little young to remember this, but the "Shady Pines" retirement home is from the TV show The Golden Girls. It was the place where Dorothy had moved Sophia to, after she was widowed. After only a short time living there, the place burned to the ground and she had to move in with Dorothy, Blanche and Rose. And of course the speculation was that Sophia might have been the one who "accidentally" tipped over the space heater that caused the fire. 😉 I've often wondered if someone with a great sense of humor ever opened up a real retirement home with the name Shady Pines. 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 I should do a little Googling and find out. Ha!!🤭😄

My partner and I have been together for 38 years. Straight people used to say, “Homosexual relationships don’t last.” Gay people would say, “Yeah, I once had a relationship for ‘x’ years.” I came to think that if people had more faith in our relationships, then they might last longer. It keeps getting better.

I completely agree. It's all in how you want to live or even more - do you have the 'tools' to have a lasting relationship/marriage. That's why I think role models like Tyler and Todd and the talk about communication are so important. No relationship straight or gay can last if you don't have the tools to make it work and people who you can learn from.

We were fully committed to keeping our wedding vows. She has now passed. I am now free to be the gay man I always was, and that has been medically proven. I was a Baptist Pastor and missionary at one point. But I am not looking for a husband. Too old now. But seeing you both together is so good. I also really admire how you manage your finances. When I was listening at the beginning and you said at some point one of us will lose the other (but we can talk about that another time) I am living in that situation now, I lost my husband in December 2016, we had 43 years physically together, this year 2023, I celebrated with friends the fact we would have been together 50 years on the 8th August. The thing I am most grateful for is that before my husband died we had chance to talk about what he wanted, for his funeral, what he hoped for me in the future, and what I needed to do when my time was close. In some small way moving forward has been a little less traumatic because I know I fulfilled his wishes and set mine up in preparation, which helps me know that right up to the end, as always, we talked things through together. What I am trying to get to in this long winded way is that talking is one of the most important parts in a relationship...............thanks for these vids...... x

We need to see pictures of you two when you met, and of the wedding. I am just so curious of what you two looked like as very young men. When you were speaking about being married, and the rights of couples it reminded me of HOW MUCH Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and SO MANY of the commonwealth and ex-commonwealth nations are so MUCH more lgbtqia+ friendly than the US, and MANY nations of the world are at this day. So many times I catch myself wishing I was born in either the UK (preferred) or New Zealand throughout my entire life. I LOVE both of them. Canada is great too, but I do not do well in extreme cold...LOL.

We got back together, and after two months back together he asked me, “what do you think of getting married.” I was shocked, we never talked about it. We never said the “L” word fearing that we would run apart again. After expressing our love for each other, we knew we wanted to be together forever. Nine months later we got married. This month we will be married 39 years. Continue to love one another. Cherish each other, respect each other, and let each other be who they want to be. I enjoy your videos. I love this podcast. Tyler and Todd, I LOVE you guys. I love how open and honest you are with yourselves, and then share that with us. And I so agree with what you said about how people spend way too much on their one wedding day. Why? A dress - for the ladies among us - of however many thousands of pounds - or dollars - is just ridiculous! You're only going to wear it once! And people put themselves in debt over that! I couldn't do something silly like that and I'm so pleased to find that I'm not alone in thinking like this. Thank you, and I'm looking forward to next week's episode! BTW where was Charlie and how is he doing? And what are you going to do this winter? Because I can totally imagine that living in that dome for a fourth winter, with a dog who has just had an op on his cruciate ligament, would be way too demanding. So all the best with those decisions!

My wedding day was the best day of my life so far. I had a fairly simple wedding, the thing that went wrong ( there's always something) was my nephew had a fever seizure and he'd recovered in a few minutes thanks to the extra water I'd brought to the church for the flowers. We had a picnic reception at my parent's home. I made a lot of the food with the help of my mom, grandma, great aunt and sister. My sister-in-law made a beautiful cake. Dad ordered the meat, lightly smoked pork loin, and bought a dozen big rattle snake watermelons and he made a huge impression with the way he cut them up. The marriage lasted nearly twenty years and now its been over 16 years, but my ex and his wife just dropped off a nightstand for me today. I am not sure exactly how much the wedding cost, but it was less than $3,000 I'm certain. We fed around 150 people and we had a great time. My aunt worked for Radisson and she gave us a night at the Radisson in Moorhead Minnesota. My sister went to our apartment and delivered the wedding gìfts and put the new sheets on our bed. My husband and I both felt so lucky that wedding day. I have not asked him about the second wedding, but i know they used zip ties for the rings. Romantic and seeing that on his finger was when I finally figured out my marriage was truly over. I socialize with them some now so I know I am so lucky she took him off my hands 😂

I am *SO* loving your podcast! Love that you combined tradition with practicality. Asking for Todd’s hand from his parents was just beautiful. I would beware nursing homes. Stay in your home forever. Get people to come to you ! As the population ages, there will be less attendants for more patients.it’s far off but something to consider, nonetheless :)

You have been together since you were 17 - wow! I look back upon my life when I was 17, and wonder who I would have wanted to be in a relationship back then. I'm going to have to dig up my high school yearbook(s) and go through them (modern-day swiping left or right scenario). Funny - the only people that come to mind were the twins from high school. (And I wanted them both badly back then!) Thanks for a truly heartfelt episode.

The biggest reason I adore you two is because your relationship reminds me so much of he one that this widow had with her husband. He died unexpectedly shortly after our 38th anniversary. He was not just Amy lover, but my best friend. He told jokes that only I could understand and laugh at. He genuinely put me first in everything. He cared for my family as if he were born into it. I have missed him every minute of the past 11 years, but I smile each time I watch the two of you because it restores my faith in love.

One of my favorite proposal videos is of a couple in Disney World with their families. When the first woman got down on one knee to propose, her GF like ran away and everyone started to freak out. But all she was doing was going to get her purse that someone was holding for her so she could get the ring that SHE had brought to propose with. Talk about being on the same page. Do you know how much joy I get from watching you two together? You are so good together.

An absolute pleasure that you guys spent this time in sharing special moments with your online family. Your ability to share and connect not only with each other but also with all of us makes your podcast very much appreciated! I personally find your ability to communicate with each other outstanding; and that ability challenges each of us as individuals/couples. I look forward for further podcasts that you will share with all of us - your online family.

LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!!!!! The tangents. Eddie steals it today, but you, Tyler and Todd, the funny, loveable duo, start my Wednesdays off with a smile. ❤❤❤❤❤ I've never really gotten in to too many podcasts, but I'm hooked. 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 I've been married 38 years this month, and you two are smarter and more evolved than we are. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂Keep up the great work. Regarding the tea, I would be too frightened to say something that quick, but I'd snark and drop hints. 😮😂 Loves ❤️ to you all. ❤️

I really enjoyed this video!! My husband and I have been together 16 years and married for 14 years. We had to go to a neighboring state to get married since the one we lived in didn't allow it. We just went in front of a judge but plan on renewing our vows on our 15th wedding anniversary. Both our families are very accepting of our marriage and we both knew from the beginning that it was going to happen. You two have figured out how to keep each other happy so I can see you guys growing old together and we will watch as it happens as long as you post on youtube lol

Ok, Tyler, Todd is on the mark with Apple Juice. I was a coffee addict until my doctor told me i shouldn’t drink it anymore for my heart. I love the taste of coffee but it was horrible giving it up. And when I needed coffee to wake up and be in a good mood, I found that eating an apple in the morning woke me up just as well but without making my heart race or flutter. So eat an Apple! As for the Nursing Home, y’all need to build one, off grid, affordable, vegan, and I would so be there! Have a community garden for all the old people to have something to do that would keep the price of food down. But yes they are expensive! When you have couples finding it cheaper to book cruises year round because they are cheaper than living in a retirement home, that’s too expensive.

My mother, when she was in her mid 90s, moved into a small assisted care residence where one of the other residents was only 67 and not in need of any "nursing" or any kind of care. This woman was single, without family, well-off but lonely. However, she was childhood friends with 3 of the other, older house residents and wanted to live with them. She contributed a lot to the quality of life of all the house residents as she could perform tasks, such as driving to the beauty salon or post office, that not all others could. She was an enthusiastic bridge player - and teacher. Plus she was a marvellous and tireless baker who was always whipping up treats for breakfast, birthday cakes, or whatever, for everyone in the house. And she loved to organize everyone to decorate for and celebrate every holiday known to the calendar - and others she made up especially for the house.😊

My husband and I have been married for 16 years (also homosexuals) and your wedding night was similar to ours and brought back some fun memories….we ordered late night pizza & wings, we were quite inebriated, so my husband ate pizza and was sick and fell asleep on the hotel washroom floor while I ate wings and opened every single gift (mostly money in cards). After opening each gift I tossed everything on the floor and moved on to the next…needless to say waking up was quite the mess and shock, my mother in law carefully helped us clean the hotel room and collect all of the cash & cheques strewn about the room….thank you for sharing yourselves, it’s fun to follow your journey but also get to humanize you both a bit 💖

I volunteer and have a buddy (Judy 90yo) friends for 32 years. Assisted living, church and lunch every week. I love it. I’m 73 and feel really great glad to see her weekly, take her to dentist, nail and doctors. Gives me purpose in life. Occasionally my partner will come. Assisted living is pretty decent if it’s affordable.
