In today's session, Ken 'hiwatt' Marshall shares an important message about being YOURSELF, and learning not to take it personally...even when you get FIRED!!! There's room for EVERYONE ;-) love hiwatt
Can't resist this opportunity... Luc, thank you. For everything. For existing. For doing what you do. You are one of my all-time heroes. Mahalo nui loa and aloha from Hawai'i!
Luc!!!!! Thank you my friend, that was an awesome experience working together back in those days! You’re a legend Luc van Acker ❤️, do you remember mixing a track at Mushroom, then driving straight to Luv A Fair to check out our mix on the PA?!? Only you could have pulled that off bud, they would’ve laughed and said “Ken who?!?” haha!!! Cheers to you and your family Luc, stay safe brother! -hw
Thank you Davey, I appreciate that my friend ;-) I’m sure everyone knows that feeling, walking into the managers office 😳 I only realized years later, just how rare and HUGE it is when leaders show up in your life...she was one of them!!! Cheers, and stay safe!
Thank you Karl ;-) Absolutely a gift, to have someone like that studio manager in your life...particularly at those vulnerable times!!! Her honesty that day was such a great example of leadership...most of us will move mountains for that!!! Cheers my friend, be safe in your travels 😊
Oh Holy HiWatt, I want you to know that even before you passed on this message to us that this is EXACTLY the message you radiate, in every way and with every lesson you share. I cannot count the number of times I’ve sat down again and felt the fire of creativity stoked by your kick-ass personality! You are a gem brother Ken and I know the industry is a far more glorious place because your energy is a part of it!!
Wow Pete, your words are so generous, thank you 🙏 I hope you know how inspiring, and FUN your engagement is Pete!!! I always look forward to your contributions, with every comment, and our collab projects...it’s an honour to get to know you, and for you to share with the community, THANK YOU ;-) ❤️hw
The most damaging disappointment is the kind that rips you off your pedestal when you thought you were at the top of your game, because you thought you were doing everything right. Everything is second guessed, black becomes white... Glad you were able to follow that with success.
Ken, this and your previous video about attitude have truly inspired me to be more proactive with my music career. Thank you for your words of encouragement!
Great story and message Ken! Thanks for sharing. I would have been completely thrilled to have worked with someone who has that much energy. By far the majority of engineers I've worked with were low energy just doing their job types. Also... you live in an absolutely beautiful place!!!
Wow this is basically like saying "I'm firing you because you like working here" 🤯 I'm glad other people understand how awesome it is that some people get so excited about their work and are passionate about it 🖤
You just made me lol! To be fair...I’m sure my lack of experience was very evident coming in ‘cold’ on a big session like that. Something worth sharing...the band came back years later, and their label hired me to engineer and co-produce an album with them! We had an absolutely AMAZING studio experience! Locked out the same studio for 2 months and made a really good record haha! Super great bunch of people, and so talented! My first Canadian gold record ;-) The GREAT thing about this business, is there’s room for everyone!!! Thanks for sharing here thegothicslytherin I appreciate it very much! -hw
@@hiwattmarshall so amazing that it turned into such a good experience and that you and the band had an amazing time 🖤 and Canada is an amazing country (I'm camadian myself :P )
The strongest man is not the one whos knows himself but the one who went through everyones opinion and came out the otherside love to you man thank you 🖤
What a shame, His loss. Your energy is magnetic 🧲 and contagious! Every time I see one of your videos, I can’t help but smile, feel good and enjoy the tasks that I tackle. Since I’ve been witness of your videos, I feel that my productions have improved exponentially. Thanks Hiwatt!
This just put a MASSIVE smile on my face Tearourwrist, particularly your sharing that you feel your productions have improved in such a big way!!! It’s a big deal, and it’s inspiring, thank you for sharing that ;-) Please stay safe, and have an awesome weekend! -hw
So spot on. As a gallery represented artist I cannot express how important the message you are saying with this video is. Not everyone is going to like you, not everyone is going to like your energy (or lack thereof), not everyone is going to like what you create. Some will hate it, some will let you know they hate it. In the end, none of that matters. What matter is you doing what you're passionate for. If you're truly passionate about it, those that like what you do will find you, will buy whatever you are producing and making or the services you offer. Sometimes two creative forces don't work well with each other, and that's OK. So glad you had a mentor and a studio manager with the insight and willingness to really continue to support and encourage you for your first rejection. On another unrelated note... I grew up on FLA and Skinny Puppy and many other industrial acts... and to find the guy that mixed a ton of that stuff on You Tube is amazing for me. Thanks for the videos and your efforts and thanks for this story. Hopefully is really impacts and inspires young creatives to get beyond those first rejections and to keep grinding out the work.
Wow Greg, why did it take me this long to see your message?!? Apologies my friend...and thank you for sharing 😆🙏🏻 Awesome insight, it sounds like maybe you've had one or two of those experiences as well...we can ultimately learn SO much from them 🙏🏻. Cheers to you, and please stay safe! -hw
Right on. I give that same advice to people all the time. Your enthusiasm was the first thing I noticed when i first stumbled on your channel. Very unique. Kind of funny.. After reading your name in those liner notes all those times over the years, I was picturing some kind of scowling somber dude brooding over the mixing board. Then come to find out you're the complete opposite. Very cool.
Mutleels, I seriously just about lost a mouthful of coffee lmao! With that attitude, you’re going straight to the top my friend...you literally have nothing to lose, and if it ever does happen...just get back up and move forward. It works every time! I appreciate you sharing here ;-) Cheers, and stay safe! -hw
@@hiwattmarshall thanks KH, your videos have been incredibly helpful and i'm slowly gaining traction. Hope you'll hear about my work in the future, just going to keep grinding for now. Don't spit out your damn fine coffee sir!
You are amazing, Ken! Im in no way a soundengineer, remixer nor producer. I just love what you've done as an engineer, and the positive energy you keep spreading. And the distortion of course! 😉 🖤
Thank you Johan, and yes, the distortion will always remain a favourite my friend 🔥💥🤟 Maybe the only effect that actually sounds better when you turn it down in the mix...but apparently not always lmao 😆 Cheers Johan, be safe ;-) -hw
This is exactly why I watch every one of these videos by Ken. Every Friday I'm looking for this. I can't fucking wait for THIS Ken Marshall to hear my album.
I was once told that I wasn't getting an executive promotion for, and I quote "He gets his employees too excited about the work they are doing". I now work for a company that loves that. It all works out in the end for those who are passionate about what they do.
Oh man, that quote says it all, and I’m SO happy to hear you moved forward poolwaiter!!! There are companies lined up to find that kind of enthusiasm, it’s really a big deal that you recognized it, and found a better path my friend, I’m proud of anyone who has the courage to endure that kind of abuse for even 5 min! Thanks for sharing poolwaiter, be safe and have a great weekend! -hw
I was fired from a film project a number of years ago because the guy in charge of the film did not know how to verbalize what he wanted. He asked for something and I provided it. He wasn't happy and asked for something different and I provided it. Around and around we went until I was fired. This all happened because of his inability to communicate what he wanted. It did hurt and was upsetting but I just had to keep reminding myself that this happened because of his inability and not mine.
Thank you for a video like this Mr. Marshall.🙏 You and your work has inspired me on many many days and years.🎹🎧💫😵👌😎👍 Keep doing you brother!..BrAp oN!!¡!✋✌
What a hack producer (no offense) I absolutely love (and crave) working with people who have an enthusiastic and creative vibe. If you're not having fun at work when you get to do what you want, what's the point?
It doesn't take the whole story to understand that you were a threat to that person while the ones who gave you the job knew you would elevate their business and that's why she called you the next day
@@John_Thompson not the reason but the motive. Imagine a boss who's there only for the pay and there's this young fellow who's there because he love it, it's obvious he would rise and surpass the boss in the hierarchy. Long story short, the boss was jalous and figured pretty fast he would eventually be replaced by a younger, enthousiast, more motivated employee
I think you’re probably right about that. The producer didn’t want to be upstaged by a young engineer who was enthusiastic about the work. Without naming anyone, it reminds me of someone I know of who was fired from an established stadium rock band essentially for being too talented and charismatic... the established band didn’t like all the attention the new member was getting on stage.
I'm thinking the producer in Ken's story might simply have been introverted. I would find it hard to work with my much more hyper younger self now that I have found that I am more productive in a quieter atmosphere.
